Weather at the finish city of Bayonne at 1:20 PM, local time: 24C (75F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the north-northeast at 11 km/hr (7 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

Rated ascents:

  • Km 13.8: Côte de Trabakua, 4.2 km @ 5.4%. Cat. 3
  • Km 32.8: Côte de Milloi, 2.3 km @ 4.5%. Cat. 4
  • Km 70.9: Col d'Itziar, 5.1 km @ 4.6%. Cat. 3
  • Km 102: Côte d'Orioko Benta, 4.6 km @ 6.3%. Cat. 3

The race: The route of the third stage was modified slightly to avoid some speed bumps, traffic circles and other what is sometimes called "road furniture". The change added 6.1 kilometers making the stage 193.5 kilometers.

Though there were four rated climbs, this was considered a good stage for a sprint finish as the race crosses the border into France. Mark Cavendish was looking forward to a chance to get that 35th Tour stage win and hold the absolute record. Going into the 2023 Tour Cavendish was tied with Eddy Merckx at 34 stage wins.

The official start was given to all 174 stage two finishers at 1:14 PM. Almost as soon as the flag was dropped Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost) & Laurent Pichon (Arkea-Samsic) took off. The peloton seemed to be happy with that because after just 11 kilometers of racing the duo had a lead of two minutes.

70 kilometers into the stage Powless and Pichon were 1min 54sec ahead of the pack with an attacking Victor Lafay just behind them. After the intermediate sprint Lafay, having grabbed some points to help him keep his green points jersey, rejoined the pack.

With 110 kilometers to go the gap between Powless & Pichon and the peloton was 2min 30sec.

After being the first over the Côte d'Orioko Benta, the day's last rated climb, Neilson Powless told Laurent Pichon he was going to wait for the peloton, which is what he did at the bottom of the hill.

With 73 kilometers to go, Laurent Pichon (Arkea-Samsic) was alone, off the front, with a lead of 2min 25sec.

Matteo Trentin requested assistance from the medical car behind the peloton after he was seen in trouble in previous climbs. He had crashed at the exit of a roundabout yesterday. The Italian is an important team-mate for Tadej Pogacar.

With 55 kilometers left in the stage Pichon was still off the front with a 1min 30sec lead.

The peloton crossed the border and was now in France.

The sprinters' teams had absolutely no intention of letting Pichon win the stage. They speeded up the peloton and the lone man out front had his lead cut to 40 seconds with 45 kilometers to go.

Then quickly that 40 seconds evaporated and with 37 kilometers left in the stage Laurent Pichon was caught. He had been off the front for 156 kilometers and had gaven his sponsors tons of publicity.

Pichon was clearly gassed after all that time off the front and after he was caught by the now fast-moving pack he was spit out the back. He dug deep and was able rejoin the peloton.

With the increased speed, riders were dropped, among them Julian Alaphilippe.

It was Team Alpecin-Deceuninck's Jasper Philipsen who won the stage while Adam Yates retained the Yellow Jersey. Philipsen's average speed in the final kilometer was 67.0 km/hr!

Sprinter Jasper Philipsen wins the stage.
