The race: Here's the report from stage winner Sam Watson's Team Groupama-FDJ:
Perseverance has paid off. After many unsuccessful attempts since joining the WorldTour team last season, Sam Watson finally took a weight off his shoulders. On Friday, in the closing stage of the Tour de Wallonie, the young Briton displayed his strength on the final cobbled climb of Thuin to claim his first pro victory. Perfectly positioned by Lewis Askey at the bottom, he claimed victory a few metres ahead of the GC favourites and brought the twelfth success of the season to the Groupama-FDJ cycling team. Rudy Molard kept his ninth place overall, after a solid week concluded in the most beautiful way.
Groupama-FDJ's Samuel Watson wins the final stage in fine style.
There were only 192 kilometres left to complete the 2024 Tour de Wallonie this Friday. In Thuin, at the end of stage 5, Groupama-FDJ squad had only one goal: winning. Initially, they also gave it a go through the day’s breakaway, like many other teams. Therefore, seventeen riders went clear before even reaching the Oude Kwaremont, at km30. “If a large move went, it was planned that Thibaud would be present, and he made it into this move,” William Green introduced. “A rider was only one minute down on GC, so Tudor really had to chase all day. For us, it was a very really nice because we didn’t have to chase.”
Although the breakaway was unable to gain a very big advantage, it still approached the finishing circuit in Thuin, around thirty kilometres from the finish, with a two-minute lead. But from then on, the collaboration stopped, and attacks and counterattacks followed. In the first time up Thuin’s climb (400m at 7%), Thibaud Gruel managed to get away with four men, but it didn’t last long. “Thibaud was very active, he was in the first move, unfortunately he missed the second, but that still took some pressure off the team,” added William. “He has improved during the week, and he was really strong today. We are very satisfied with his performance.”
The former rider from “La Conti”, who found himself with two men thirty seconds behind a leading quartet for some time, was eventually caught by the bunch less than ten kilometres from the finish. Within the pack, his teammates took over. “We had two options for the final”, explained William. “First, Sam had to attack to provoke other teams to chase on the short flat section at the top of the pavé climb. If it came back, we had to lead out Paul to sprint. But after his attack yesterday, we knew how much power Sam had, and that it was going to be difficult to catch him”. So, it was necessary to approach this final climb of Thuin in the best possible way. “The idea was for Cyril to lead out on the descent until the final climb, but he had to work earlier”, added William. “We adapted with Lewis into the descent, and we kept the same plan, which was to launch Sam from the bottom.” “In the end, I gave everything for Sam,” Lewis said. “I positioned him on the descent, and when I saw that we were going to catch the last riders of the breakaway just after the tight corner, I told Sam to sprint from the bottom. After that, it was almost impossible for those who were not positioned to come back.”
The two Britons were therefore the first riders in the peloton to catch the breakaway, and Sam Watson did go straight away. “The plan was to be at the front for the last climb, and all I had to do was go full gas,” he said. “I have to say that the team, and especially Lewis in the end, did the job to perfection. All I had to do was to focus on going full gas.” That’s what he did, and immediately opened a gap of a few metres on the cobbled climb. Thanks to a powerful effort, the 22-year-old Englishman always kept a small margin on his closest chasers, and once the hardest part was done, he definitely broke away from the rest of the peloton, which was split apart. On the final stretch to the line, Sam Watson gave his last bits of energy, and then had the chance to enjoy a well-deserved victory. “It’s crazy,” he said a few moments later. “I’ve been waiting a long time for this victory, I’ve often come close, so I’m extremely happy. Even more so with the way I did it, going solo to the line. I felt really good all week and being able to follow the attack yesterday gave me a lot of confidence. I have to say thanks to Jussi and William for giving me the confidence and the chance to go for today. I’m just happy I could pull it off.”
After a very active week, with two podium places for Paul Penhoët, things finally clicked for Sam Watson and his teammates. “It’s really nice to see our work finally rewarded,” said Lewis. “Everything went as planned and everyone couldn’t be any more pleased, especially after a difficult period, and even more so with a group that has raced together a lot,” concluded William. “We knew that Sam had the physical attributes to win in a final like this. Last night, we sat down together, and we told him: this stage is for you, this is what you can do. He went all-in for it, and we are really very pleased. Now we have to keep this momentum going because we have some nice races ahead of us.” While Rudy Molard finished the race in ninth position overall, the Groupama-FDJ cycling team achieved its twelfth victory of the season.

Stage 5 profile
Thursday, July 25: Stage 4, Verviers - Herve, 188.51 km
Matteo Trentin wins stage four and becomes the new GC leader.
James Witherell's book Bicycle History: A Chronological History of People, Races and Technology is available in both print and Kindle eBook formats. To get your copy just click on the Amazon link on the right.
Weather at the finish city of Herve at 2:30 PM, local time: 23C (74F), fair, with the wind from the southwest at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast until after 7:00 PM.
The race: Here's the report from fifth-place Mick van Dijke's Team Visma | Lease a Bike:
Mick van Dijke achieved another top-ten finish at the Tour de Wallonie. After his fourth place in the first stage, the 24-year-old rider from Team Visma | Lease a Bike sprinted to sixth today. Matteo Trentin took the stage win and the leader's jersey.
On the hilly course between Verviers and Herve, the riders were presented with three categorised climbs. On the famous Cote de la Redoute, the climb that marks the final of Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Per Strand Hagenes tested his legs. The young Norwegian attacked with the best climbers, but was not able to stay away.
After the last remaining breakaway rider was caught, Hagenes saw his opportunity to try again. He and two other riders created a small gap, but the sprinters did not let themselves be surprised. Trentin won and Van Dijke had to settle for sixth place.
"We knew the stage would be tough, but not tough enough for the peloton to explode. That's why we chose to make the race hard ourselves,", sports director Maarten Wynants said. "Per was very good and did a late attempt in the last three kilometres. Unfortunately, he just didn't make it to the line. Mick then rode a good sprint and finished sixth."
Winning a stage is still the goal. "The way we rode today offers perspective for tomorrow. Including the climb of the Oude Kwaremont, it promises to be another difficult day. We have one more chance and we want to take it."

Stage 4 profile
Wednesday, July 24: Stage 3, Arlon - La Roche-en-Ardenne, 192.63 km
Markus Hoelgaard makes stage three his own.
Bill & Carol McGann’s book The Story of the Tour de France, 2022: The Fastest Tour Ever is available in both Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.
Weather at the finish city of La Roche-en-Ardenne at 1:50 PM, local time: 21C (69F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the northwest at 6 km/hr (4 mph). There is just a 2% chance of rain.
The race: Here’s the report from Per Strand Hagenes’ Team Visma | Lease a Bike:
Per Strand Hagenes finished eighth in the third stage of the Tour de Wallonie. The 21-year-old Norwegian of Team Visma | Lease a Bike made a strong impression in the queen stage and finished in the same time as the GC riders. Breakaway rider Markus Hoelgaard took the stage win.
With 2900 altimeters and seven categorised climbs, the peloton could prepare for a tough day. Five riders went clear and gained a maximum five-minute lead. Hoelgaard and Jimmy Janssens were the strongest of the breakaway and stayed ahead. In a sprint-a-deux, it was Hoelgaard who won.
In the peloton, Hagenes climbed with the best and was part of a small group chasing the leaders. After it became clear that they could not be caught, the sprint for the final podium spot was on. Hagenes eventually had to settle for eighth place.
"I was surprised that the breakaway riders got such a big lead and were allowed to battle for victory. No team took responsibility", Hagenes said. "I had a very good day. Beforehand, I wasn't sure if I would be able to go up with the best, but fortunately the pace on the climbs wasn't too fast. That worked out well for me."
Hagenes is happy he got the team's trust. "I wanted to try to follow as long as possible and see what would happen. That went okay. As a team, we did very well. Even though there are only four of us left, we had everything under control. It wasn't up to us to close the gap with the leading group."

Tuesday, July 23: Stage 2, Saint-Ghislain - Ouffet, 188.25 km
Corbin Strong (purple jersey) wins stage two.
Bill & Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, 2020: The Tour During Covid-19, Better Late Than Never is available in both Kindle eBook and Audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.
Weather at the finish city of Ouffet at 2:45 PM, local time: 21C (69F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 23 km/hr (14 mph). There is just a 3% chance of rain.
The race: Here's the report from stage winner Corbin Strong's Team Israel-Premier Tech.
File this one as flawless: Corbin Strong sprinted to win stage two of the Tour de Wallonie on Tuesday and moved into the race lead after an impeccable performance by the Kiwi rider and his Israel – Premier Tech team-mates.
Strong made light of a challenging uphill finish into the town of Ouffet after being led out by Simon Clarke.
But this performance was about more than just the final 500 meters. Newly-crowned Israeli road race champion Oded Kogut, Michael Schwarzmann, and Riley Pickrell did a great job keeping the day’s breakaway in check, before Strong and Clarke helped split the peloton on the category two Côte de Géromont with 12 kilometers remaining.
Although an eight-rider group containing the duo was short-lived, IPT was not going to be denied its 21st victory of an unforgettable 2024 season to date. Home rider Dylan Teuns – the race’s 2017 champion – and Nick Schultz set a blistering pace on the approach to the line, ensuring that nobody could launch a speculative attack. After Schultz’s job for the day was done with a kilometer to go, Teuns then Clarke ensured Strong had the best approach to the finish line.
“I’ve been thinking about this week here for a couple of months now,” says Strong.
“Training went really well, I’m really happy with how the form is, and it’s nice to come here and get the win.
Corbin Strong wins stage two.
“I think if you watched the stage today, it was such a privilege to be a part of this team today. They were all behind me – I even thought to myself in the last three kilometers, with the work my teammates did today, that I better pull this one off! They all rode really strongly – Schultzie, Clarkey, Dylan in the final kilometers, they all did a dream lead-out. I always think that on a finish like this, if I’m not coming from too far back, they suit me really well. I had a lot of confidence in myself today.”
Strong has now won races in each of his three professional seasons with IPT: the opening stage of the Tour of Britain in 2022, a stage of the Tour de Luxembourg in 2023, and now this success in Belgium.
The 24-year-old holds a three-second advantage over his nearest rival on GC, Red Bull BORA-hansgrohe’s Jordi Meeus, with three others sitting within 10 seconds of him.
Three more days of punchy terrain awaits the riders, and Strong says he will do all he can to keep hold of the leader’s orange jersey.
He adds: “I think I’ll be surprised if tomorrow’s a sprint – it’s a really hard day, but I’m looking forward to giving it a go and seeing if I can keep the jersey to the end of the race.”

Monday, July 22: Stage 1, Tournai - Fleurus, 179.2 km
Jordi Meeus wins stage one.
Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, 2019: A Year of New Faces is available in both Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.
Weather at the finish city of Fleurus at 1:50 PM, local time: 22C (71F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 16 km/hr (10 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.
The race: Here's the report from stage winner Jordi Meeus' Team Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe.
Jordi Meeus wins the first stage of the five-day Tour de Wallonie (2.Pro) in Fleurus. On home soil, the Belgian sprinted to his second win of the season and took over the GC of the race. The 179.2km stage between Tournai and Fleurus in the Walloon part of Belgium featured three categorised climbs and three sections of cobblestones. Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe's tactics were clearly focused on Jordi Meeus and a sprint finish. In the hectic finale of the stage, Meeus kept composure, was perfectly positioned and following a strong sprint, was able to celebrate the stage win.
From the Finish Line:
“It was a pretty hard stage and the finale was super hectic. I managed to stay in a good position and launched my sprint at the right time. This victory wouldn’t have been possible without my team mates. They did a great job keeping the race together and I’m super happy that I was able to finish it off with a win.“ - Jordi Meeus
“Jordi’s hard work definitely paid off. He just returned from altitude where he trained alone for the past couple of weeks. Today our goal was pretty clear - to take the the stage with Jordi. We did a recon yesterday to check out the finale, made a good plan and the boys executed our plan perfectly. Kicking off a race with a win is always a boost and so we’re very much looking forward to the next stages here.“ - Heinrich Haussler, Sports Director
