Final overall winner Niki Terpstra

The Race: Here's the report from Etixx-Quick Step,

Tour of Flanders, the Inside Story

Etixx - Quick-Step maintained their defense of the yellow jersey for the 5th and final stage of Tour de Wallonie on Wednesday, which sealed the overall victory for Niki Terpstra after he initially took the race lead with a Stage 1 victory out of a two-rider breakaway.

The whole team worked on the front for the Dutch Road Champion in the 167.3km fifth stage from Chimay to Thuin. They kept him near the front, bringing back a breakaway with 2.7km to go, and controlled the race with a high tempo going into the final ascent of Mur de Thuin so that any gaps would not be enough to threaten the race lead.

Danny van Poppel (Trek Factory Racing) went over the top of an attacking Michael Morkov (Tinkoff-Saxo) on the uphill to the finish, and went on to win solo with a 3" gap over the field. Philippe Gilbert (BMC Racing Team) was 2nd, and Matti Breschel (Tinkoff-Saxo) finished 3rd. Pieter Serry of Etixx - Quick-Step finished 4th, and Terpstra 6th.

The overall victory of Terpstra was far from easy, particularly with a challenging final parcours. The 5th Stage was a flat start, but with plenty of up-and-down in the final kilometers. There was a three-lap, 12km circuit, and it heavily featured Mur de Thuin. Mur de Thuin was climbed four times, including a final time going into an uphill finale.

Terpstra's overall victory is the 39th on the road for Etixx - Quick-Step in 2015, and his 6th victory of the season.

"I'm very happy about this victory because from the day I first put on the yellow jersey until today it wasn't easy," Terpstra said. "There was a final circuit with a cobbled climb in the middle. This made for some hard racing. But I could count on my teammates today, as I could the entire race. They gave me a big hand, really controlling the entire day. My victory is also a result of their job. Of course, my victory the first day was key. I finished with a gap and was able to defend it for four more stages. I am happy and proud about this victory, as it's only the third stage race that I won in my career, after Tour of Qatar this year, and also last season. I'm proud of this, because I won in a completely different parcours compared to Qatar. Qatar is completely flat and windy. Here we had to struggle on the Ardennes climbs. Really it was a different kind of race. So I am really happy I made it at a parcours that, on paper, doesn't typically suit a rider like me. This victory gives me the motivation to continue to perform well in 2015, and be ready at the next race, which for me will be the Eneco Tour."

Jonas Vangenechten get the flowers and time with the pretty girls for winning stage 4

The Race: The Tour de Wallonie's penultimate stage ended in a big bunch sprint and IAM Cycling's Jonas Vangenechten was the fastest man of the day.

Earlier, an escape of four riders was brought back, mostly through the efforts of race leader Nicki Terpstra's Etixx-Quick Step team.

Terpstra finished 27th today, safely in the front group, to remain the GC leader.

Monday, July 27: Stage 3, Bastogne - Namur, 218 km

Philippe Gilbert

Philippe Gilbert wins Tour de Wallonie stage 3

The Race: Here's the report straight from BMC: BMC Racing Team's Philippe Gilbert had time to freewheel his BMC teammachine SLR01 across the finish line and raise one arm in celebration Monday as he captured Stage 3 of the Tour de Wallonie.

Gilbert attacked in the final 800 meters of the uphill climb to the finish at the end of the 207-kilometer race. He soloed in four seconds ahead of Pieter Serry (Etixx-Quick Step), who won a reduced bunch sprint ahead of Thomas Sprengers (Topsport Vlaanderen-Baloise).

"I have done this finish a few times," Gilbert said. "I think I have won two or three times before here and been second twice and once fifth, when it was a Giro d'Italia stage (in 2006). So I knew the final really well."

It was Gilbert's second win in the past six days. The 2012 world road champion had been sidelined by a knee injury since June 16 when he withdrew from the Tour de Suisse before Stage 3. But last week, in his first race back, Gilbert won a bunch sprint finish at Grand Prix Cerami.

"Now my knee is OK and in my head that is a big win," he said. "I feel free. It is easier on the bike. And when you have success, you want more. So when you are in a good mood like this, you hope to keep winning. So now I hope I can get a win like this on the WorldTour so we can get some points."

Before Gilbert's heroics, the BMC Racing Team worked hard to help reel in five riders from the day's breakaway.

"Loïc Vliegen and I had to ride pretty hard to get the last guy back because over the last climb, he still had 20 seconds," Marcus Burghart said. "Before that, Jempy Drucker and Peter Velits were doing the work and Rick Zabel was leading us out to a tricky downhill. Alessandro De Marchi was also putting in hard pulls as well for the last climb on the flat. So it was a pretty good team effort."

With two days of the race to go, Niki Terpstra (Etixx-Quick Step) still leads, having won a two-up sprint on Stage 1 by more than a minute ahead of the peloton. Vliegen climbed from seventh to fourth in the overall standings by finishing 14th, 10 seconds back of Gilbert. He is 42 seconds behind.

"What was important for us today was the victory," BMC Racing Team Sport Director Valerio Piva said. "As I said from the first day, it will be difficult to beat Terpstra. He is a strong rider and he was in the front again today in the final. So the GC (general classification) will be difficult. But we will keep trying and trying to win more stages."

Sunday, July 26: Stage 2, Beaufays - Bessange, 171.39 km

Danny van Poppel wins Wallonie stage 2

Danny van Poppel wins Wallonie stage 2

The Race, here's the way Trek Factory Racing described the stage:

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

Danny van Poppel took advantage of some fantastic teamwork to win the second stage at the Tour de Wallonie Sunday.  Trek Factory Racing, with only five men in the race, used its limited resources perfectly to lead van Poppel to the victory on his birthday, a wonderful present for the 22-year-old.

“It was special that I can win on my birthday,” said an elated van Poppel. “It was hard race with a lot of climbs - never flat.  In the middle of the race a big group went away and [Etixx] Quick Step pulled full gas and that made it really hard.

“I felt good already in the training camp we made with the team, but it’s not always easy to win when you are feeling good, so to do it, and on my birthday is something. My mom and girlfriend were there today and they don’t often come to my races so that was really special, too.”

Breakaways animated the 171.4-kilometer stage two at the Tour de Wallonie, but Trek Factory Racing played possum, choosing to lay low and chance everything would come together at the end.

In the closing kilometers, the pinstripes kicked into action. Yaroslav Popovych and Hayden Roulston pulled hard at the front to help neutralize the last remnants of an escape group, and in the finale Boy van Poppel gave a flawless lead out for his brother and Danny sealed the deal with his second victory of the season.

Van Poppel: “Five kilometers before the finish there was an 800-meter climb and we knew that [Philippe] Gilbert would attack there so the team dropped me in good position there and I was really strong on the climb and I think we were gone with six riders, all the big names, we had a small gap, but no one wanted to work together and were caught back on the descent.

“In the sprint I was a little far back but Boy rode me to the front, we took a lot of risks but it was a perfect leadout to 200 meters to go and then I went full gas over him. It was an easy win for me after all the work of the team. I felt strong today.”

Director Dirk Demol was pleased the team turned around a less than stellar first stage Saturday and did so in the best way possible.

“Today was good – a couple breaks today, but we just stayed calm,” explained Demol by phone. “In the final Popo [Popovych] and Hayden pulled and in the end Boy did a perfect leadout for his brother so that brought us the win today.”

“I knew that we could win today with Danny. I saw him riding strong at the team training camp in the Alps that we organized for the riders during the Tour de France, and last week in GP Cerami with his second place he proved his condition is there.  He also had the extra motivation today with his birthday. I told the boys for sure there would be cake tonight, but it’s up to you if it’s a plain cake or something else!”

Saturday, July 25: Stage 1, Wanze - Hannut, 190.7 km

Niki Terpstra

Niki Terpstra wins Wallonie stage 1

Here's the race report from Etixx-Quick Step: Etixx - Quick-Step rider Niki Terpstra did what he loves to do most with about 24km remaining in 190.7km Stage 1 of Tour de Wallonie on Saturday: Attack. He went away from a 13-rider escape group — down from an original selection of 14 — along with Victor Campenaerts (Topsport Vlaanderen - Baloise). The duo maintained their advantage all the way until the finish line of the opening stage.

Terpstra launched with 200m to go and won over Campenaerts for the first time in his 2015 Dutch Road Champion jersey. Terpstra won by four seconds. The two riders had more than a 44" advantage inside 4km to go. Yauheni Hutarovich (Bretagne-Séché) finished 3rd, 21" behind the lead duo.

Terpstra's victory is his 5th of the 2015 season, and the 38th on the road for Etixx - Quick-Step.

Terpstra will protect his race leadership on Sunday for Stage 2, 181.4km from Beaufays to Bassenge. There are nine climbs and a local circuit of 30 kilometers. The final climb is at kilometer 166 of the stage. The profile features steeper climbs in comparison to Stage 1, but the finale is flatter than the other moments of the stage.

"For the entire day it was bad weather, rain and plenty of wind," Terpstra said. "We started with an uphill and then there was the typical false flat roads in Wallonie. At that point of the parcours we went away with 14 riders, including my teammate Martin Velits. Martin did a great job keeping the speed high in the breakaway. We had good collaboration in the group. At about 24 kilometers to go, on a slight uphill, I attacked and Campenaerts followed. We went up the road together and in the end I won. It's really nice to win for the first time in this Dutch Champion Jersey, and to open Tour de Wallonie with a victory. It's a good start for the GC, but we will see day-by-day what we can do with the overall. At the moment we will enjoy this victory, and starting tomorrow we will see what can happen."
