Cycling's World Championships

The race: Here's the report from stage winner David Gaudu's Groupama-FDJ team.

The Tour de Luxembourg ended in the best possible way for the Groupama-FDJ cycling team on Saturday. In the capital’s streets and following an explosive final, David Gaudu managed to secure the win after a smart attack in the last few hundred metres. The Frenchman not only made the team’s race balance really positive, but also unlocked both his counter (3) and that of the team (22), stuck for five and one month respectively. In short, he brought a much-needed win and one that bodes well for the upcoming races.

Just like in the previous days, the terrain was once again quite hilly on Saturday, in the closing stage of the Tour de Luxembourg. Almost 3,300 meters of elevation gain were actually spread over the 183 kilometers course, and a tiring final circuit around the capital suggested a lively final.

Beforehand, a breakaway made of Ben King (Rally Cycling), Otto Vergaerde (Alpecin-Fenix), Morten Hulgaard (Uno-X) and Kenny Molly (Bingoal-Pauwels Sauces WB) tried to play its card against the bunch and even enjoyed up to a seven minute-gap. However, the latter was reduced to two minutes with thirty-five kilometres to go, shortly before entering the circuit.

“We planned to make the race harder at that point, but other teams did it for us, so we let them do it,” explained Sébastien Joly. In the short but steep Pabeierbierg (700m at 9%), the selection began. The peloton was first reduced by half, and lost some other riders a lap later when Sébastien Reichenbach pushed hard in that same climb with about fifteen kilometers remaining. Reichenbach, still him, later launched an attack in the other, more rolling climb of the circuit. “It was good to attack to keep the other teams working,” said Sébastien Joly. “It enabled us to get to the bottom of the last climb in good conditions”. About forty men were still there starting the final hill, as the summit was located just one kilometre from the finish line.

As expected, the climb proved extremely intense and Cosnefroy, Almeida and Hirschi managed to reach the top with a small margin. “When Cosnefroy attacked, it was very brutal, including for the top three,” explained Sébastien. “At the top, they were not looking at each other, they were out of breath. This is when David decided to attack”. Slightly in the back in the final part of the climb, David Gaudu first bridged across and then seized the right moment to attack, 500 meters from the line. He said: “Since last night, I was thinking not to attack in the climb. I was like, ‘if you attack, just do it once, in the last kilometre, when everyone’s looking at each other’. This is what happened. It was a very hard final and I felt that I was not the strongest today. If I wanted to win, I had to counter at the top. I didn’t want to have any regrets so I was like ‘go for it and we’ll see’. I managed to get a small gap, took the last corner as fast as I could and gave it my all until the finish line. I was afraid the scenario of the first day would repeat itself. I saw the yellow jersey coming back, but I gave it my all in the sprint and it was enough!” The young man therefore conquered the day’s victory just ahead of Joao Almeida and a dozen riders, including Thibaut Pinot.

“David felt the right move”, said Sébastien. “He’s got that racer’s feeling. It’s really inspiring for everyone, and that’s what I’ll recall from today as well. Already in the first stage, he attacked at the right time. He feels things, and that’s what makes you a real racer. It’s good that it paid off today. The terrain was probably not hard enough for us on paper, but it’s always up to us to adjust. And David adjusted quite well.”

The entire team was obviously euphoric at the finish line, celebrating a collective effort paying off. “We deserve this victory”, emphasised Thibaut, thirteenth on the day and seventh overall, one spot behind David Gaudu. “The whole team was going really great and we were close from that win for a few races. It’s great to finally finish it off”. “I’m very happy, and that rewards the week from the team,” David said. “From the start of the race, we were there, on the attack, and trying to do things right. Even today, the team did a great job all day to position us for the climbs and to protect us from the wind. We had been looking for a win for a while. It’s done, so we’re happy. It’s good for me personally, but I think it’s good for the whole team as well”.

“It is good indeed, especially since it is a victory in a great, Hors Categorie race, with big teams and a high level field,” said Sébastien Joly. “Generally speaking, we feel a good momentum growing. It bodes well for the end of the season. The week’s balance is good, and it especially allowed us to see where we stood physically. We saw that we were up there in the most difficult stages. It’s promising for the Italian Classics. It was far from a preparation race, but it was still an excellent preparation for these races which are coming in about ten days”.

Before the final straight in Italy, David, Thibaut & co will enjoy a small rest. “We leave this race full of confidence,” David concluded. “We will continue to work in order to fine-tune the last details, then we’ll be heading to the Italian Classics”.

The race: Here's the report from winner Mattia Cattaneo's Deceuninck-Quick Step team.

Mattia Cattaneo couldn’t hide his big smile after becoming the 17th different Deceuninck – Quick-Step rider to score a victory this season in the 25.4km individual time trial that the Tour de Luxembourg scheduled Friday, a stage everyone expected to bring some big gaps in the general classification, where things were tight at the beginning of the day.

A member of the Wolfpack since 2020, Cattaneo blitzed the course around Dudelange, setting a blistering time at the intermediate checkpoint before breaking the sub-31-minute barrier, the first rider to do so thanks to an impressive 49.34km/h average speed. Bronze medalist at the National ITT Championships in June, the 30-year-old Italian confirmed the spectacular progress he made against the clock in the past two seasons and took to the podium at the end of the day to celebrate the first ITT victory of his career.

“I am so happy, because I worked a lot in the time trial and to finally get my first win in the discipline feels amazing. The fact that I did it in the Deceuninck – Quick-Step jersey, in the best season of my career, makes everything even more special. It’s my first time here in Luxembourg and I already liked it here, but now this country has become even more special. I’m delighted with the excellent day the team had”, said Mattia after moving up to third on the general classification, which is being led by his teammate João Almeida.

Four seconds separated the Portuguese from the yellow jersey at the start of the stage, but a huge ride in the time trial saw him conclude second and put the 23-year-old all-rounder back in the driving seat with a comfortable margin of over 40 seconds: “First and second for the Wolfpack, it doesn’t get any better than that. I’m delighted to be in yellow again, but also for Mattia, he deserved this victory. I had really good legs today and went all out, especially in the second part of the course. I have a nice margin in the GC now and we will do everything to keep the jersey on the final stage.”

Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage three summary:

With 189.3 km, the third stage on Thursday between Mondorf-les-Bains and Mamer was the longest of the 81st edition of the SkodaTour Luxembourg.

Six riders broke away from the peloton: The Luxembourger Alex Kirsch (Trek) was accompanied by Ben O’Connor (Ag2r), Kenneth van Rooy (Sport Vlaanderen), Philipp Walsleben (Alpecin), Ceriel Desal (Bingoal) and Jasper de Buyst (Lotto-Soudal). Desal, however, was dropped with 55 km to go.

In the end, even the five remaining riders from the breakaway didn’t have a chance against the peloton and finally, the bunch sprint was won by Sacha Modolo (Alpecin) ahead of Benoit Cosnefroy (Ag2r) and Eduard-Michel Grosu (Delko).

However, one big name was absent from this sprint: After having finished the first two stages in the last position with a big gap, the Australian Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal) didn’t start the third stage.

In the general classification, there were no changes in the first positions. Marc Hirschi (UAE Emirates) defended the yellow jersey with a lead of 4″ on Joao Almeida (Deceuninck) and 19″ on David Gaudu (Groupama).

Bicycle History

The race: Here is the report from winner Marc Hirschi's UAE Team Emirates.

Marc Hirschi took his first victory in the UAE Team Emirates colours with a show of strength which saw him claim the stage honours and the overall race lead at the Tour de Luxembourg.

The Emirati squad showed dominance on the hilly parcours from Steinfort to Eschdorf (186.1km) with sterling work from Juan Ayuso on the final run-in setting up Hirschi to make his attack supported by Davide Formolo and David De La Cruz who placed in 4th and 5th respectively.

Hirschi made his killer move with -2km on the steepest section of the climb to the line before pulling out a gap on the chasing group led by Joao Almeida (Deceuninck-Quickstep).

As Hirschi crossed the line solo with his arms aloft, the count back began with the 23-year old securing enough time to take hold of the leaders jersey ahead of Almeida by +4’’ heading into another hilly day on stage 3 from Mondorf-les-Bains to Mamer (189.3km) tomorrow.

Hirschi: "To win here solo is a really nice feeling. On the last climb the gap opened and I went full gas because I had nothing to lose. It was a very long day because of the rain and each time up the climb the pace was really hard. It’s nice also to take yellow though I think it’s going to be difficult to defend it in the time trial because I know Almeida is very strong."

Tour de France: 2020

The race: Winner of the 2020 edition of the Tour de Luxembourg Diego Ulissi must take a break to undergo cardiac tests.

Here's the report from winner Joao Almeida's Deceuninck-Quick Step team:

João Almeida became the first Portuguese since the legendary Acacio da Silva, in 1990, to win a stage at the Tour de Luxembourg, which got underway Tuesday afternoon with a short and hilly 140km stage that culminated in a reduced bunch sprint.

An interminable succession of climbs awaited the peloton, who decided to allow a six-man group to build a maximum gap of four minutes after rolling out from the country’s capital. Deceuninck – Quick-Step hit the front some twenty kilometers from the start, asserting their control over the race and steadily chewing into the gap of the men up the road. Fausto Masnada, who made his first appearance in almost three months for the Wolfpack, was among those devoting all their energies to bringing back the breakaway, which was mopped up inside the closing three kilometers.

Our team then reeled in some late attacks before bringing Almeida to the front as the road began rising ahead of the flamme rouge, and the 23-year-old patiently waited for the finishing straight before bursting clear from his opponents, courtesy of a truly ferocious sprint unleashed 200 meters from the line that brought him his fifth victory of the season.

“It was a very hard stage, and to be truthful, I didn’t feel great, but I had a strong team around me who did an amazing job, chasing the escapees and protecting me throughout the day. I knew that if I had the legs, the uphill finish would suit me. I played it smart there and I’m happy I could pull it off. Donning the yellow jersey is a nice bonus, but we won’t think of the GC just yet, and instead continue to take it day by day and see how things go”, said João, only the second Portuguese in history to lead the Tour de Luxembourg.
