Saturday, May 22: 5th & final stage, Vera - Pulpi, 107 km
Ethan Hayter takes the final stage. Robert Stannard and Daryl Impey crashed just before the finish line.
Weather at the finish city of Pulpi at 1:50 PM, local time: 24C (75F), sunny, with the wind from the east at 18 km/hr (11 mph). No rain is forecast.
The race: Here's the report from stage winner Ethan Hayter's INEOS Grenadiers team.
Ethan Hayter sprinted to his second stage victory of the race at Ruta del Sol in a hectic finale to secure the points classification.
Hayter rounded off a superb team move as Carlos Rodriguez led him out for the final sprint, narrowly avoiding a crash near the line, to earn the green jersey.
Rodriguez finished in the top 10 to secure a fantastic fourth overall, missing out on a podium place by just 30 seconds.
The decisive move to win the stage was initiated by the Grenadiers, with Leonardo Basso and Luke Rowe chasing down the early break as the race neared the final 15 kilometres.
The hard pace easily caught the escapees, before Owain Doull and Eddie Dunbar took over from their teammates to continue to shred the peloton ahead of a punchy final climb.
Rodriguez then helped Hayter to maintain contact with the reduced lead group on the ascent before leading the Londoner out to secure his second win in five stages
Ethan Hayter:
"The team were amazing, Leo Basso pulled today and pretty much every day. They were great all week and we ended up with Carlos fourth and I was eighth overall in the end.
"It was a short stage, so flat out on the last climb and I just about held on the back! Then there were crosswinds in the sprint, so I let Carlos go and ran at him. Impey and Stannard had a coming together which I could see in my peripheral vision. it’s not the way you want to win the sprint, but that's bike racing."

Friday, May 21: Stage 4, Bazar - Cúller Vega, 182.9 km
André Greipel takes the stage and his teammate Rick Zabel (who came in 6th) celebrates.
Weather at the finish city of Cúller Vega at 2:00 PM ,local time: 29C (84F), sunny, with the wind from the northwest at 13 km/hr (8 mph). No rain is forecast.
The race: The riders staged a short protest at the start of the stage over how yesterday's stage three was run. Here is the statement from the Professional Riders Association (CPA):
"The riders participating in the “Vuelta a Andalucia” will delay the start of today's stage by a few minutes to protest against the lack of attention that has been given to their safety requests at the race.
"The riders protest against the choice of routes, gravel descents and large potholes, which in yesterday's stage put their safety and well-being in serious danger.
"This difficult situation is to be added to the long and tiring transfers to which the athletes have been subjected during this race. They understand the organizer's difficulties due to the post-pandemic period but they ask for more attention and respect to be given to this situation, as this is also a requirement by the regulations.
"The safety of the athletes must be the priority in the organization of all races, both large and small and they will no longer tolerate serious shortcomings such as those which were encountered yesterday.
"This symbolic protest is intended to attract the attention of the organizers and the UCI to this important issue."
Here's the race report from second-place Alvaro Hodeg's Deceuninck-Quick Step team:
One week after claiming the win at the Grote Prijs Vermarc, Alvaro Hodeg was again involved in the business end of the race – the penultimate stage of the Vuelta a Andalucia, which after three demanding days in the hills, finally gave the sprinters an opportunity to take center stage, as they travelled from Baza to Cullar Vega, over 182.9 kilometers.
Seven men moved clear from the peloton, putting three minutes between them and the field, but several teams took over pace-setting duties and made sure of bringing them back. Ian Garrison did a tremendous job for the Wolfpack, his effort being decisive in the escapees being overhauled in the closing kilometers of the race.
Shane Archbold and Stijn Steels then stretched out the bunch on the flat roads of southern Spain, before Bert Van Lerberghe came to the front, showing a superb instinct as he navigated the peloton with Alvaro Hodeg in his wheel. The Colombian was a bit closed near the barriers before unleashing his acceleration, and despite a great turn of speed, all he could do in these conditions was take runner-up behind André Greipel (Israel Start-Up Nation), a result that underlines the strong condition he came into the race with.

Thursday, May 20: Stage 3, Beas de Segura - Villarrodrigo, 175.1 km
Miguel Lopez takes the stage and the GC lead.
Weather at the finish city of Villarrodrigo at 1:45 PM, local time: 26C (79F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 8 km/hr (5 mph). No rain is forecast.
The race: Here's the report from stage winner Miguel Lopez's Team Movistar.
The long times of suffering were finally left behind for Miguel Ángel López (Movistar Team) on Thursday. More than seven months after his crash in the 2020 Giro d’Italia; following a long recovery, unable to ride his bike until Christmas; suffering from covid, which sidelined him for an extra month; and out of racing until late April with the Tour de Romandie, the Pesca native was still able, in barely ten days of racing, to snatch a win for the Blues with a fantastic display at the Queen stage of the 2021 Vuelta a Andalucía -177km, with six categorized climbs, between Beas de Segura and Villarrodrigo-.
López started giving sense at the Collado de los Yesos (Cat-2), the day’s penultimate ascent, to the long, strong gamble made today by the José Luis Arrieta-led group, with Héctor Carretero joining the early break and the likes of Mora, Hollmann, Rojas, Serrano or Abner González picking up the pace behind to help their leader attack with less than 20km remaining. ‘Superman’ left behind the opposition from Carlos Rodríguez (IGD) and race leader Ethan Hayter; took himself to Carretero, who completed a five-star performance to support him through to the final kilometer; and didn’t have any problems to win the uphill sprint against Antwan Tolhoek (TJV, 2nd) and James Piccoli (ISN, 3rd).
Miguel Ángel is the new GC leader, with two days left in Andalusia, after claiming the men’s Movistar Team’s sixth success of the season, the 14th for the Abarca Sports organisation since the start of 2021. A year – more precisely, the last month and a half – which hasn’t stopped mixing grief and glory for the Blues.
REACTION / Miguel Ángel López:
“It’s a really special day. The team was magnificent today. It wasn’t to be yesterday, we came second, the finish was so hard, yet we started today with a plan to pay back the whole team after the work they’ve been doing from the very start of the race, and all team-mates were excellent again. Héctor was the key man today: we had him joining the breakaway, looking to have someone ahead to support after an attack, but all the other team-mates, Rojillas, Abner… did an impressive job so I only had to get myself to Carretero, for him to support me until the end. It was sensational.
“I’m so happy because it’s been really hard to get here, to be back in the peloton, even more so to chase results. Behind this, there’s loads of work which people often don’t see. I’m back after almost eight months away. I didn’t race basically since the end of the Tour de France. It was hard to return, I also caught covid… This is a new project, which I face with great excitement. I’ve found myself really comfortable here, they’ve always looked after me, and it shows. My team-mates, the work they do every day – it’s so important.
“We achieved the most difficult thing today. As ‘Arri’ says, grabbing the leader’s jersey is the hardest, but it’s not over at all. There’s two stages now ahead, which we must pay extreme attention at. Hopefully we can keep this until the end. This victory is a tribute to all people in Colombia, the Movistar brand, my family, my wife and child, and my mom, who was celebrating her birthday two days ago. I would have wanted to bring her a win yesterday on the cobblestones, but I had to wait an extra day (smiles).”

Wednesday, May 19: Stage 2, Iznajar - Alcala la Real, 183 km
Ethan Hayter takes the stage and the GC lead.
Weather at the finish city of Alcala la Real at 2:00 PM, local time: 26C (79F), sunny, with the wind from the northwest at 8 km/hr (5 mph). No rain is forecast.
The race: Here's the report from stage winner and new GC leader Ethan Hayter's INEOS Grenadiers team:
Ethan Hayter continued his superb run of form with an emphatic stage victory on stage two at Ruta del Sol.
The day ended on the brutal ramps of the Alcala la Real climb, with Hayter able to measure his efforts well to edge clear of his rivals on the eye-watering, cobbled gradients.
The young Brit crossed the line eight seconds ahead of Miguel Angel Lopez (Movistar) and moved into a 11-second race lead.
Carlos Rodriguez had pushed clear over the previous climb and headed into the closing kilometres as part of a 10-man group. The Spaniard was able to hang tough to finish fourth over the line, elevating himself to sixth overall at 21 seconds with three days to go.
Ethan Hayter:
"I didn’t attack or anything. Everyone was just going so hard. It was so steep on the cobbles. I was in a good position – we had Carlos at the front after the longer climb – so I just followed and I kind of just made sure I had position, as I knew it would be hard to follow on the cobbles. And everyone else around me just blew up I think. I blew up as well, but I had a gap so I had the motivation to hang on! The climb was borderline crazy but I guess that’s bike racing sometimes. I guess we put on a show.
"Today was probably the hardest finish I think. There’s more climbing tomorrow so we’ll see what happens (with the GC). I don’t know what the gap is but I got three seconds yesterday on some people. I could just about get myself across the line, let alone see where everyone else was."
Complete results:
183 kilometers raced at an average speed of 36.059 km/hr.

Tuesday, May 18: Stage 1, La Cala de Mijas - Zahara de la Sierra, 152.1 km
Movistar's Gonzalo Serrano finishes ahead of Orluis Auler & Daryl Impey. Caja Rural photo
Weather at the finish at Zahara de la Sierra at 1:20 PM, local time: 27C (81F), fair, with the wind from the northwest at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast.
The race: Here's the report from stage winner Gonzalo Serrano's Movistar team.
As he already did last year at a tough finish, Iznájar’s, Gonzalo Serrano used a slight uphill to his full advantage in Zahara de la Sierra to open his Movistar Team account on stage one of the Vuelta a Andalucía, a rolling course in western Andalusia’s ‘White Towns’ over 152km from La Cala de Mijas. The Telefónica-backed gave its all for the Madrilian to take a brilliant success, the Blues’ men’s team’s fifth and the Abarca Sports organisation’s 13th in the 2021 season, which never stops giving them joy.
As the Blues initially worked with a couple of riders to chase down the early break with Sprengers (SVB), Oliveira (UAD) and Soto (EUS), their pace and implication became really evident at the last 10km as all Sebastián Mora, Abner González, Juri Hollmann, José Joaquín Rojas and Héctor Carretero took themselves to the front. The ‘Blue train’ would never leave the front again, reducing the main group to about a dozen riders, including Miguel Ángel López (9th), quite motivated for this Ruta del Sol.
Serrano bested Orluis Aular (CJR, 2nd) and Daryl Impey (ISN, 3rd) to don the leader’s jersey before Wednesday’s stage two, a key one for the overall result, with La Hortichuela (Cat-2) just before another steep ramp in Alcalá la Real.
Gonzalo Serrano:
“I might as well have to come and live here! (Laughs) I don’t know if it’s just coincidence, the heat here… but in the end, it’s two stages in consecutive years. It makes me so proud to be part of the Movistar Team. Having such experienced riders, such as Rojas, and they give a hand to you, who have just come to this team – there couldn’t be a better reward to pay them back for the efforts than a win. It’s difficult to make things better than we did today. I had such good legs, the teamwork was excelent – just as we planned with our DS, ‘Arri’, on the bus.
“Arri was already here before, checking the routes, and he knew this really well – the Vuelta a Andalucía had also used these roads last years. We knew it, we knew that the little town with 8-9km to go was the place to start pushing. The race was always a little bit up from there, and my team-mates put on a really good pace to try and take the sprinters off the group, which we achieved. I knew that the road narrowed with 2km to go, and there, Rojas further picked up the rhythm, then Héctor was incredible – he left me at the 300, 400m to go mark, which was more or less where we planned to launch it.
“I raced both the Flanders and Ardennes classics, then I took some rest, because it had been a very demanding few months. Talking with my coach, I knew my legs were good, yet at the first day in Mallorca, I had some cramps and couldn’t perform well – it might have been the first warm day of the season. It doesn’t get all morale off you, but you feel disappointed, because you know you have to take advantage when you’ve got good form. This win goes to all of my team-mates: the staff, carers, mechanics – everybody who supports us and the Movistar Team.
“Wednesday’s finish is somewhat similar – it’s not the same, it’s quite more difficult, but it suits me well, too. Stage three will be quite different, though: it’s a really hard one, more than 4,000m elevation gain, and having a strong leader as Miguel Ángel, we have to race for him, because I don’t know how far I’ll reach. We know he’s going well, so he has to be the leader. I’ll try and contest again the stage tomorrow – keeping the jersey would be so nice, but for the GC, we should go with Miguel Ángel.”
