The race: Here's the race organizer's stage seven summary.

The 103rd edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya will go down in history as the edition of Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), the most charismatic cyclist of his generation, who finished off the race with a fourth stage victory on its final day, the traditional finale in the city of Barcelona and its Montjuïc circuit. A victory in a hard-fought reduced sprint that adds to those achieved with solo attacks in the mountain stages finished in Vallter, Port Ainé and Queralt to frame a week for history for the Slovenian.

At 25 years of age, double Tour de France winner and five-time Monuments champion Tadej Pogačar has added the Volta a Catalunya to his long list of victories in world-class events, a year after his compatriot Primož Roglič took victory. Two cyclists of reference in their generation who have left their mark in Catalonia in two editions to remember.

The final day of this 2024 edition reached its seventh stage, a day of 145.3 kilometers starting from the Plaza de Espanya in Barcelona, with passage through the Coll de la Creu d' Ordal (3rd category) in its initial ride through the Baix Llobregat and return to the capital for six laps of the circuit of l' Alt del Castell de Montjuïc.

There, a group of five breakaway riders arrived highlighted with Ander Okamika (Burgos-BH) winning the prize as the most combative rider of the day and German Georg Steinhauser (EF Education-EasyPost), who had already been a protagonist in the fifth stage on the way to Viladecans, was the man who most resisted the rider's push in the first laps of the Montjuïc circuit, with attacks from names like Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates) and the work of Egan Bernal's Ineos Granaderos team. The young German was caught at the start of the last lap, with the group on fire after a first move by Pogačar on the passage through the toughest ramps of Castell de Montjuïc.

Despite attacks on the last lap by Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Dstny), the Belgian icon who was bidding farewell to the race in which he has added five stage wins in his career, Stephen Williams (Israel-Premier Tech) or Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates), nothing prevented a reduced sprint finish of about twenty riders in which Pogačar proved his versatility with a fourth victory. A poker for the memory of Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) in this Volta a Catalunya 2024, a generational cyclist who has led the final podium in Barcelona ahead of Mikel Landa (Soudal Quick-Step), at 3:41, and a recovered Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers), who returns to the final podium of the Volta after climbing in 2019. Three high-level protagonists for a Volta Ciclista a Catalunya that has lived a great week of competition between Sant Feliu de Guíxols and Barcelona.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner & GC leader Tadej Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates.

Pogačar dominated the queen stage of the Volta a Catalunya (Berga-Queralt, 154.7 km with 5 Gpm and summit finish) thanks to a solo move that earned him his 4th seasonal victory and strengthened his leadership in the general classification of the race.

After UAE Team Emirates controlling the race in the first half of the stage, the Slovenian talent attacked at 29 km to the arrival, when there were 2,6 km to the summit of the Collada de San Isidre, obtaining immediately a large gap (around 55”) on the immediate chasers, who were Mikel Landa (Soudal Quick Step) and Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers).

Pogačar handled the advantage on the chasing duo also in the final climb, crossing the finish line with 57” on Bernal and Landa.

With only one stage left in the Volta a Catalunya 2024, Barcelona-Barcelona, 145,3 km with 6 laps on the Alt de Montjuic, the UAE Team Emirates’ captain leads the GC with 3’31” on Landa.

Another shot of Pogacar finishing the stage.

Pogačar: “It was a very hard stage. We controlled it from the start in a pretty good way, but on the long hors category climbs Visma-Lease a Bike tried to set a harder pace that heavily selected the group. There were only 10 riders remaining, and we as UAE Team Emirates were well represented considering that there were also Joao Almeida and Marc Soler with me. Then a group of riders came back, Movistar tried to attack on the following climb and I launched my attack there and I went to the top and then straight to the arrival. The final climb was great, with such a lot of people cheering”.

The race: Here's the report from Team Visma | Lease a Bike.

In the shadow of the cycling excitement in Flanders and Italy, among other places, racing also took place today in Catalonia. Team Visma | Lease a Bike got through the fifth stage of the Volta a Catalunya without too much trouble. With the final weekend approaching, Sepp Kuss is in seventh place in the general classification.

Stage five was expected to favor the breakaway riders, but the sprinters' teams certainly didn't count themselves out of chances either. Consequently, it took a long time before a breakaway group finally got the green light. Attila Valter showed his fighting spirit along the way by attempting several breakaways. Eventually the stage ended in a sprint, won by the Frenchman Axel Laurence. Classification riders Kuss and Cian Uijtdebroeks finished in the same time.

“Initially, we came here for a top-five classification with Sepp or with Cian," stated sports director Marc Reef. "And that is still possible. We have two very difficult stages left. We are getting a little bit stronger every day, so that is promising for the final two stages."

Uijtdebroeks describes his day on the bike: "It was still a pretty tough day. In this race, no day is easy. The two climbs along the way went smoothly. We positioned ourselves well at the front when we needed to be alert as a team. We even managed to save some energy for tomorrow. Hopefully, we can go all out then.”

Weather at the finish city of Lleida at 12:45 PM, local time: 21C (70F), fair, with the wind from the southwest at 6 km/hr (4 mph). No rain is forecast.

Rated ascent:

  • Km 73.7: Port d'Ager, Cat. 2

The race: José Manuel Garcia (Burgos-BH) & Raul Garcia Pierna (Arkea-B&B Hotels) did not start.

Here's the report from stage winner Marijn van den Berg's Team EF Education -EasyPost:

Marijn van den Berg flew through the hectic final kilometer of stage four of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, waited for his moment, and launched his sprint.

He thrust his bike forward at the line. No one was going to deny the Dutchman his first win of 2024. Marijn was ahead by a bike length in the final photo.

After catching his breath, he waved and blew a kiss to the television camera. Today’s victory is his first big prize of 2024 and an award for the hard work and determination he showed this spring. Marijn was glad to reward the confidence that his teammates put in him from the moment the flag dropped in Sort all the way to the finish in Lleida.

“It was a really fast day and the plan was to race for me the whole day,” Marijn said. “The team rode on the front to control the break. I felt quite good the whole day and they kept me in front. At the end, it was kind of hectic with all of the roundabouts, but I knew the Brian Coquard was a really fast guy and tried to aim for his wheel. I kept on it until the finish and then came past in the last few hundred meters.”

That’s an understatement. Marijn absolutely rocketed up the final uphill drag. He is back in great form after a difficult spring.

“I made a big step this winter and it was going really well in the beginning, but then I crashed quite hard in Algarve and had a concussion and was out for a little bit,” Marijn said. “I started competing again last week in Milano-Torino and Milano-Sanremo and then I came here to focus on getting in shape and see how the outcome would be here in a stage like today. Now, I am back on track, I would say.”

You sure are, Marijn.

Tomorrow’s fifth stage out of Altafulla features two categorized climbs before a flat run into Viladecans. If he can get over the hills, Marijn could have the chance to sprint again.

Rated ascents:

  • Km 41.9: Port de Toses, Cat. 1
  • Km 132.9: Port de Cantó, Hors Categorie
  • Km 176.7: Port Ainé, Hors Categorie

The race: Loe Van Belle (Visma | Lease a Bike) & Pavel Bittner (dsm-firmenich-PostNL) did not start.

Here's the report from winner Tadej Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates:

Minutes after Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates) won stage two of the Coppi-Bartali race, UAE Team Emirates could celebrate also the stage victory of Pogačar in Volta a Catalunya (16 wins for the Emirati team in 2024).

Repeating the winning move that brought him to victory on stage 2, the Slovenian star attacked on the final climb of the day (stage 3, 176,7 km from Sant Joan de les Abadesses to Port Ainé, final climb of 18,4 km at 6,7%).

Pogačar sped up at -6 km, overtaking Mikel Landa (Soudal-Quick Step) and powering on to the finish , where he had an advantage of 48” on the Spaniard.

Pogačar: "Definitely it wasn’t easy, it was a really hard climb, also in altitude and cold at the top. Once again, it was a super good stage for us, I wanted to take the victory because the team worked super hard for me.

"Mikel Landa attacked first, I went on the counter after him because I saw he had already made the gap. I thought that it could be maybe too early to attack, but I found a good rhythm and I could still push good until the final 2 km, though I could definitely feel the altitude in the final section."

Here's the report from stage winner Tadej Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates:

After yesterday’s second place on the first stage, Tadej Pogačar immediately asserted his physical condition by forcefully winning the second leg of the Spanish race, which took the riders for 185.6km from Mataró to the ascent of Vallter 2000.

The morning didn’t start well for UAE Team Emirates with Jay Vine forced to withdraw from the start due to stomach problems. However, the team worked well throughout the stage, setting the pace and keeping the breakaway under control.

Adverse weather with rain and fog accompanied the second part of the race, but it couldn’t stop UAE Team Emirates and Tadej Pogačar who, at the beginning of the final climb (11.4 km with peaks of 18%, and an average gradient of 7.6%), first caught the last escapee and then unleashed the solo effort of the Slovenian rider who crossed the finish line (at 2135 meters above sea level) alone with a lead of 1’23” from the nearest chasers.

A good performance also from the Portuguese Joao Almeida, who was in the group with Pogačar until his attack, and remaining with the best to finish the stage in fourth position.

Pogačar: “We started with almost summer weather but the clouds chased us and the rain fell starting from the penultimate climb. Despite the adverse weather conditions and the altitude, I felt good, testing my legs already in the last descent and then going at my pace until the end without looking back.”

Tomorrow the race will resume with another challenging stage: 180.6km from Sant Joan de les Abadesses to the climb of Port Ainé.

The race: The riders officially began the stage at 12:38 PM

Here's the report from winner Nicholas Schultz's Team Israel-Premier Tech:

Nick Schultz could not have said it any better: “this is huge for me,” declared the Australian after his audacious attack helped him claim victory on stage 1 of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya in Sant Feliu de Guíxols on Monday.

Schultz broke clear approaching the flamme rouge, helped brilliantly by teammate Stevie Williams who slowed the pace behind, and managed to stay clear on the uphill drag to the finish line to claim the biggest victory of his career to date.

Behind, Tour Down Under winner Williams superbly marked the GC favorites, in particular Tadej Pogačar, whose UAE Team Emirates squad went all-in for the Slovenian today, before sprinting to take third place.

“I think I was on the finishing line asking ‘what happened?’,” Schultz adds. “This was a huge surprise for me. I think it was pretty clear what my objective was today – my job was to take Stevie down the last descent and through the final corners. I never once thought about winning the stage today, I was only thinking about the team. He was on my wheel just before the final corner and he yelled at me to keep going. He let the gap go. In that moment, I was going to go as hard as I could to provoke somebody to come after me, but I got a pretty gap and knew I had to keep going as hard as possible.

“Ultimately, I never thought it would come to fruition, but I’m really thankful to Stevie for letting that gap go because he could have won that stage in his own right. Maybe that was the beauty of not being the big leader: I had nothing to lose. In my head, I wasn’t racing for the win, I was racing to help Stevie. I think that ultimately meant I could leave it all out there – if I came fifth or 30th today, it wouldn’t have changed anything.”.

This was IPT’s 14th victory of the season to date – one more than the team’s tally for the entire 2023 campaign – and third WorldTour success after Williams’ triumphs in Australia. For Schultz, who won in front of his fiancée, this was the third win of his career and first since August 2021.

He adds: “There’s such a good atmosphere in the team. We’ve got great personnel, amazing staff, and a great group of riders, and this is just the hard work of everybody paying off. I think it’s clear that things are going so well when someone like me wins the stage. I’m not a guy who wins very often, if at all.

“I’m realistic – I’m not riding GC here at this race. I just had the biggest victory of my career, I’m going to enjoy it. I think the best way to do that will be to do what I love doing and helping out the guys tomorrow.”

Williams paid tribute to Schultzie, who was part of the team that supported him en route to winning the Tour Down Under in January.

“I’m really proud of Nick, he’s a selfless helper and a great teammate,” said the Welshman. “I’m really happy and proud to see him take his first WorldTour victory here. It’s a wonderful start to this race for our team.

“We rode great as a team all day. We knew that it was going to be key to get to the top of the final climb in a good position for the descent into the finish, as it was more than likely there were going to be splits. We got onto the coast for the final time, and we were well positioned. I went into the final corner one-two with Nick, and I thought I’d let the wheel go to see what would happen. He got a gap immediately and there was a lull behind. Inevitably, it was always going to go out, because nobody had any teammates to chase. I hoped he would be able to hold on, which he did. Behind, I was also able to open my sprint, and round out the podium.”

About the 2024 Volta a Catalunya:

The race organizer wrote:

The Volta Ciclista a Catalunya has all the details ready to kick off its 103rd edition, which will be held between March 18 and 24 with a demanding seven-stage route between Sant Feliu de Guíxols and Barcelona. The double winner of the Tour de France, Tadej Pogačar, leads a stellar participation with names like Sepp Kuss, Egan Bernal, Geraint Thomas or Simon Yates who will fight for the triumph of the Catalan UCI World Tour event in a week of high expectations throughout the territory, full of novelties and expected returns and with three high altitude finishes as the main sporting attraction.

One more year, the Volta a Catalunya will have a truly luxury participation, with at least six grand tour winners among the participants. The main attraction among the 175 cyclists who will take the start this Monday, March 18 from Sant Feliu de Guíxols is undoubtedly the presence of Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates). The Slovenian, one of the most charismatic cyclists of his generation, makes his debut in the Catalan race looking to take over from his compatriot Primož Roglič, winner of the last edition.

Pogačar's cover letter speaks for itself: double winner of the Tour de France (2020 and 2021, and runner-up in the following two editions), winner of Monuments such as Il Lombardia, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Tour of Flanders, as well as numerous top-level international races that have earned him a professional record of sixty victories at just 25 years of age.Accompanied by such important names as the Catalan Marc Soler or the Portuguese João Almeida, two riders who know what it is like to climb the final podium of a Volta a Catalunya, he and his team UAE Team Emirates aspire to be a reference of the race. However, the list of contenders will be long.

The first of them is surely Sepp Kuss (Team Visma-Lease a Bike), the last winner of the Vuelta a España and a cyclist highly valued for his links with Catalonia, who will also have a strong team in which the young Cian Uijtdebroeks stands out. The Volta a Catalunya 2024 will also have two more Tour de France winners, Egan Bernal and Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), two cyclists who also already know what it's like to climb the podium of the Volta a Catalunya in 2019 and 2021, respectively.

The list of participants of the 103rd Volta a Catalunya also includes other grand tour winners such as the British Simon Yates (Team Jayco-AlUla), winner of a Vuelta a España, or Nairo Quintana (Movistar Team), winner of a Giro d'Italia and a Vuelta a España. Two Colombians like Quintana himself (2016) and Sergio Higuita (Bora-hansgrohe), winner in 2022, will be the two former winners of the Volta a Catalunya who will be back at the start in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, where there will be other contenders like the Basque climber Mikel Landa (Soudal-Quick Step), the Russian Alexander Vlasov (Bora-hansgrohe) or the promising Lenny Martínez (Groupama-FDJ), among others. Along with Marc Soler, will complete a Catalan participation with four riders Joel Nicolau (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Pau Miquel and Álex Jaime (Kern Pharma Team).

The three high altitude finishes are back
The 103rd edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya has one more year with a demanding and attractive route, with special prominence of highly anticipated returns. For the second consecutive year, the race will have three high altitude finishes: the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya mountain resorts of Vallter and Port Ainé and the high altitude finish at Queralt, in Berga, something exceptional that the Volta had not experienced for more than two decades until the last 2023.A route with a high prominence for the high mountains, with twenty-three mountain passes along the route, four of them of special category: the arrivals at Vallter and Port Ainé, the Port del Cantó and the Coll de Pradell, one of the great attractions of the stage in Berga, the penultimate stage of the competition, which will be the first time in competition in the Volta.

The first stone will be laid for the third consecutive year in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, which will live the arrival and departure of a first stage of 173.9 kilometers of route and three scoring ports through the massif of Les Gavarres before an explosive finish where Michael Matthews and Primož Roglič has won in the last two years.

The second stage will already lead to the first finish at altitude, in a day of 186.5 kilometers starting in Mataró and finishing at altitude in the mountain resort of Vallter, in Setcases (Vall de Camprodon). The cycling ceiling of Catalonia, where last year the Italian Giulio Ciccone managed to beat Primož Roglič and Remco Evenepoel, is all a special category port that will be hardened by the previous climb to the Coll de Coubet, 1st category.

The third stage, which will start from Sant Joan de les Abadesses 50 years after its last visit and will finish in the Pallaresan mountain resort of Port Ainé after 176.7 kilometers of route in which the cyclists will have to face two endless passes such as the Port de Toses, 1st category, and the Port del Cantó, one of the four special category passes of the edition as the same arrival in Port Ainé, will still be a high mountain challenge of more entity.

The slope will relax in the fourth stage, which will start from Sort, the capital of Pallars Sobirà, and will finish in the city of Lleida 11 years after its last visit. There will be 169 kilometers of route with a single scoring port and a very flat final part prepared for a sprint finish in the capital of Segrià, where great names in the history of cycling such as Mario Cipollini, Laurent Jalabert, Maurizio Fondriest or Miquel Poblet have won.

The fifth stage will link two unprecedented venues such as Altafulla, in the heart of the Costa Daurada, and Viladecans The Style Outlets. There will be 167.3 kilometers of route that can bring surprises in some of the most leg-breaking roads of the Penedès and Baix Llobregat with two second category passes on the route, the Coll de les Ventoses and the Alt de la Creu d'Aragall, the latter crowned less than 30 kilometers from the finish line.

Everything will be ready to live in the sixth stage one of the most anticipated and most decisive stages: a day without rest of 154.7 kilometers starting from the city of Berga, which was not a protagonist of the Volta since 1959, and arrival at altitude in the sanctuary of Queralt, which will discover all the cycling potential of Berguedà. It will be a stage of real mountain with five mountain passes, among which will highlight the premiere in competition of the Coll de Pradell, of special category, feared for its length and its impossible ramps.

After this challenge, the race will close once again with a magical final stage with Barcelona as the protagonist. From the capital of Catalonia will leave the cyclists of the Volta in this seventh stage, which after crossing the interior of the Baix Llobregat will return to Barcelona to live an incomparable end of party both for sporting and public incentive with six passes through the 'Alt del Castell de Montjuïc', 2nd category, which can finish deciding the winner of the Volta a Catalunya 2024 if it has not yet done so in the previous six stages.

So, all the ingredients are ready to live a 103rd historic edition of the Volta a Catalunya, which will bring together again for a week the best cyclists in the world on Catalan roads. A sporting spectacle and images of the territory that will reach the whole world thanks to the important international broadcasting of the Catalan race, the third oldest of the world elite after the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia, which distributes its images in 190 countries through 36 international broadcasters and can be followed live on television in Spain through Esport 3, Teledeporte and Eurosport.
