Weather at the finish city of Beringen at 1:55 PM, local time: 17C (62F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the north at 11 km/hr (7 mph). There is a 21% chance of rain, dropping to 10% as the afternoon progresses.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Fabio Jakobsen & GC winner Mauro Schmid's Team Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl:

Mauro Schmid became the first Swiss rider in history to win the Belgium Tour, one of cycling’s oldest races, after successfully defending his slim margin in the general classification on the 179.9km stage 5 that travelled from Gingelom to Beringen.

Having pulled on the blue jersey at the end of Saturday’s hard stage in the Ardennes, Mauro knew the Golden Kilometer bonus sprints, placed inside the final seven kilometers, would be crucial, and guided by Michael Mørkøv he took the same number of bonifications as his closest rival in the general classification before concluding the stage in the pack and sealing the victory for less than half a second – the difference made in the race’s short individual time trial.

“The team did a great job the whole day, keeping me in a good position. Michael’s experience was important, his presence in the Golden Kilometer helped me take home the overall win. At the first sprint I made a small mistake and I thought that was it, I had lost it, but I remained calm and took back those seconds at the next two sprints.”

“Everybody believed in me, including Fabio, who sacrificed his lead-out for this. There was some pressure on my shoulders today, but I managed it and I’m happy with this success. It’s another important step in my career, one for which I am grateful to the team”, Mauro explained after netting Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl’s tenth victory at the Belgium Tour.

The last stage of the competition came down to a mass gallop, and Fabio Jakobsen was there, grabbing the opportunity with both hands. The most successful sprinter of the year, the Dutchman kept his composure as he navigated the hectic corners in the closing kilometers and unleashed a phenomenal burst of speed in the last 150 meters, giving no chance to his opponents and nabbing his tenth win of the year.

“The general classification was more important and the team went for it today, because they had faith in me that I could do the sprint on my own. The last lap was like a criterium and I was in a good position at all times as we got closer and closer to the finish. Then, with 100-150 meters to go, I launched my sprint and I got this victory that I really wanted and which gives me a lot of confidence for the next races”, said Fabio, who signed off the Wolfpack’s 31st win since the beginning of the year, one which keeps the squad at the top of the team victory standings.

Saturday, June 18: Stage 4: Durbuy - Durbuy, 172.3 km

Stage 4 map & profile

Quentin Hermans takes the stage while second-place Mauro Schmid becomes the new GC leader.

Weather at the start/finish city of Durbuy at 1:30 PM, local time: 33C (91F), sunny, with the wind from the southwest at 13 km/hr (8 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from new GC leader Mauro Schmid's Team Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl.

A great day of racing at the Belgium Tour concluded with Mauro Schmid making a visit to the podium to collect his second leader’s jersey of the season. Having topped the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali general classification in March, the Swiss has repeated that performance at the team’s home race, following the toughest stage of the entire week.

One of the ten different Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl riders to rack up a win in 2022, Mauro sat only 26 seconds off the overall lead, but thanks to a perfect move which saw him join a strong group with more than 70 kilometers to go, he turned the table in his favour and will now start the final stage with the blue jersey on his shoulders.

The numerous hills sprinkled over the 172.6km route around Durbuy made things impossible to control, and knowing this, the Wolfpack and Schmid made their move early. The small 10-second gap expanded to the point the peloton was taken out of contention more than 20 kilometers from the finish, when the attackers’ advantage showed two minutes.

After getting involved at the Golden Kilometer sprints and notching up three bonus seconds, Mauro still found the energy to fight for the victory, ending the stage just behind Quinten Hermans (Intermarche-Wanty-Gobert) – a result that combined with the bonifications scored on the line moved him at the top of the standings, the difference between him and the next rider on the GC being made by the hundreds of a second in the time trial.

“I knew it could be very close in the end and it would come down to the bonifications at the finish and in the Golden Kilometer if we stayed together. We did a good job as a team, with me in the break and the other guys controlling what was happening in the bunch behind on a hard and incredibly hot day. I tried to save the legs a bit for the finale, but I felt the effort on the last climb, where I knew Quinten would be strong. When I noticed Tim was dropped, I searched for the last ounce of energy to gain as much time as possible, and I’m happy I got rewarded with the leader’s jersey. We’ll see what we can do on the last stage, but the plan is to try to defend this jersey and help Fabio go for the win”, Mauro said after the podium ceremony.

Weather at Scherpenheuvel-Zichem at 1:45 PM, local time: 28C (82F), sunny, with the wind from the south at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Yves Lampaert's Team Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl.

Yves Lampaert took an important success ahead of travelling to Gavere next week, where he will attempt to defend the ITT national title he conquered last season. One of the main favourites before the start of the Belgium Tour stage 3 – a flat 11.8km time trial held around Scherpenheuvel-Zichem – Yves left nothing to chance Friday afternoon, when he produced a flawless ride which resulted in him delivering our team’s 21st victory at the race.

Averaging close to 52km/h, the reigning Belgian Champion stopped the clock in 13:39, enough to put him in the hot seat, where he remained until the stage concluded. This win elevated him to second in the general classification, where the Wolfpack is represented by two other riders, Mauro Schmid and Florian Sénéchal, giving our team several options for the hilly queen stage scheduled on Saturday.

“It feels great to get my first victory of the season, and the fact that I did it with this jersey on my shoulders makes it even more special. I am happy to be on the top spot of the podium after a frustrating spring, and I hope I won’t stop here as we take on the second part of the season.”

“Today it wasn’t easy. It was very hot, the course had some technical parts and I suffered towards the end, but I am delighted I could pull it off. It’s quite the confidence-boost ahead of the National Championships, but until then we focus on the remaining stages of the Belgium Tour, where we have options for some more good results”, said 31-year-old Yves after Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl’s 28th win of the season.

Weather at the finish city of Knokke-Heist at 1:30 PM, local time: 23C (73F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 14 km/hr (9 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Danny Van Poppel's Team Bora-hansgrohe:

A pancake flat stage two favored the sprinters today. Even an early break went away, in the end all was set for a bunch sprint. BORA – hansgrohe tried to lead-out Sam Bennett but the team lost each other on the final kilometer and in the end, Danny Van Poppel was in a better position to take on the sprint. Danny finished strong second behind Jasper Philipsen.

“Well, the last kilometer was frantic. It was almost impossible to stay together with all the people moving from side to side. Unfortunately, Sam lost my wheel at one point and after that he said in the radio, I should sprint for myself. I was quite far back to be honest, but there was a lot of headwind and most of the guys went too early. I was sitting in the wheel of Philipsen and almost surfed to second.” – Danny Van Poppel

“First of all, I have to say we are happy with the result. Of course, our goal is to win a stage here, but the performance of the guys is really good. Unfortunately, Sam lost his train on the last kilometer, and he was simply too far back after the last corner to do a sprint. That’s a pity but we hope for one more chance here this week.” – Torsten Schmidt, sports director

Weather at the finish city of Maarkedal at 1:30 PM, local time: 24C (76F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Mads Pedersen's Team Trek-Segafredo.

Mads Pedersen powered to victory in Stage 1 of the Baloise Belgium Tour, capping a robust Trek-Segafredo presence all race.

After winning six bonus seconds in the always thrilling Golden Kilometer sprint, Pedersen still had enough strength to close a gap and jump around Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Fenix) in the final meters.

Although Mads and his teammates looked in control in the finale, he doubted catching Jasper Philipsen after the Alpecin-Fenix rider jumped early. Plus, Mads doesn’t like hot weather and has never won a race above 25 Celsius.

“Really tough race,” said Pedersen. “I think this was one of the warmest days of racing for me this year, and normally I am not that good in the heat. Tough day – a classic kind of stage, and then the heat on top of that made it pretty hard.

“Then the finale is really hard with the climb at two and a half k to go, and even the sprint is a tough one. Jasper (Philipsen) opened quite early and I thought, ‘Fuck, he made a gap already.’ But luckily for me, he popped a little bit in the last meters, so I could pass.”

In the end, Mads crossed the line by over a bike length, erasing any doubts about where his form may be ahead of the upcoming Tour de France.

“I came here to have a stage win, and now we have one, so yes why not try and win the GC,” he said. “This shows the shape is where it should be, and this was one of the hardest days, so yeah, it’s possible, but still a long week of racing left.”

He added: “But this is not the main goal; the main goal is to try to have another stage win and then do a good TT. We will see.”

What was evident was that the Dane was feisty. All race. Even in his non-favorite weather, Mads raced hard: he joined a three-rider move that bridged up to the breakaway with 68 kilometers to go – quickly shut down, of course – and tested his legs in the Golden Kilometer, taking away six bonus seconds. Then he crested the final cobbled climb at the front and still mustered enough power to best everyone – by well over a bike length.

What was also clear was the Team cohesion. Everyone went all-in for the Danish leader. They were attentive at the front, closed down all moves in the last kilometers, led Pedersen into the final tricky cobbled climb, and gave a lead-out into a tough finish.

“A really good day, and I am really proud of my teammates, they did impressive work all day, and it’s nice to give them a win,” agreed Pedersen. “In the end, I was in a pretty good position behind (Florian) Senechal, and then Jasper came from behind with a long sprint. He made a gap, but luckily, he blew up in the last meters. So, good sprint for me.”

We can go even further: a super sprint and an incredible display of teamwork by Trek-Segafredo all day.
