Bradley Wiggins was his generation's most gifted rider against the clock. He exploited this ability to win numerous individual and team pursuit championships as well as road time trial championships. He won a total of six National, World and Olympic Road Time Trial Championships.
His initial focus was on track racing, but he got serious about road racing in 2008. His 2009 season vindicates this decision with a major stage race win in the Herald Sun Tour as well as a third in the Tour de France. That Tour de France third place was initially a fourth place, but Lance Armstrong's disqualification moved Wiggins up to the podium.
In 2010 he joined Team Sky and the following year he hit his stride with wins in the Critérium du Dauphiné and the Tour de Romandie, plus a second place in the Vuelta a España and a third in Paris-Nice.
2012 was his year. He won the Tour de France (winning 2 stages), the Critérium du Dauphiné again, the Olympic Individual Time Trial, Paris-Nice (GC & points) and the Tour de Romandie. His 2011 and 2012 seasons were simply extraordinary.
His wins are not without controversy. He was granted therapeutic use exemptions (TUE) to use otherwise banned drugs to treat asthma and hay fever. Some have questioned the necessity of Wiggins' needing those drugs to compete. Both Team Sky and Wiggins deny the use of any drugs without medical need. The Guardian has a good explanation of the subject.
From that 2012 season he continued to win races, but never again on the level.
In 2015 he become the World Hour Record holder, going 54.526 kilometers. His record stood until 2019 when Victor Campenaerts went 55.089 kilometers.
Wiggins retired from racing in 2016.
In 2009 he was a CBE (Order of the British Empire) and was knighted in 2013.
