Men's Olympic 4,000 Meter Individual Pursuit Track Race Results
Two riders start at opposite sides of a velodrome and from a standing start, chase each other. The race is over if a catch is made. Otherwise, the riders continue to the end of the of the race, the rider ahead then being declared the winner.
Amateur men generally race 4,000 meters and this is the Olympic distance, women go 3,000 meters. Professional pursuits are usually 5,000 meters.
Crowds enjoy pursuit races. It's easy to see who is ahead as the race progresses.
As part of a general reordering of Olympic track cycling ordered in 2009, the individual pursuit as a seperate event has been discontinued. It's now part of the Omnium.
