The original story Hansen told was that she was driving home from an Aspen Art Museum party because Lance had a little bit to drink. The owner of one of the damaged cars said Hansen told him, 'I'm Anna, we're the Armstrongs, my husband's Lance, he was just driving maybe too fast around the corner or something.''

The man called the police, but Armstrong left before the police arrived. Later, a police investigation showed Armstrong was driving but the couple had decided to let Hansen take the blame.

Police cited Armstrong for failing to report the accident and speeding. Hansen was not cited.
