1979 Tour de France Quick Facts:

3,720.4 km divided into 24 stages plus a prologue.

The 1979 Tour de France was ridden at an average speed of 36.513 km/hr.

There were 150 starters and 89 classified finishers.

In winning this, his second Tour de France, Bernard Hinault was the class of the field, taking 7 stages.

Hinault lost nearly 4 minutes in stage nine, a day of cobbles.

Joop Zoetemelk would have finished far closer in time, but a doping positive in the last stage cost him a 10 minute penalty.

Zoetemelk was so superior to the rest of the field that he was still second after the penalty.

Photos from the 1979 Tour de France:

The Prologue: Knetemann, in the Rainbow Jersey of the World Champion, wins the opening round. Sadly, Knetemann passed away in 2004 at the too-young age of 53.

Stage 8: The masters of the team time trial, TI-Raleigh, racing for Le Havre and the stage win. Hinault's Renault squad finished only 6 seconds slower.

Stage 17: 37 years old, but with the strength and power of a man 10 years younger, Agostinho powers to the top of L'Alpe d'Huez and the stage win.
