Sepp Kuss wins the 2018 Tour of Utah.
The race: Here's the report from winner Sepp Kuss' LottoNL-Jumbo team.
Sepp Kuss has won the overall classification in the Tour of Utah. The 23-year old American did this in style by soloing to his third stage victory in Park City. He also wins the mountain classification.
The victories of Kuss are respectively the twenty-sixth and twenty-seventh victory for Team LottoNL-Jumbo this season. It is the fourth overall victory for the team in a stage race this year after the victories of Primoz Roglic in the Tour of the Basque Country, Tour de Romandie and the Tour of Slovenia.
Kuss laid the foundation for his final victory with victories in the mountain stages and was able to keep himself upfront in the remaining stages with the help of his Team LottoNL-Jumbo teammates, who controlled the race diligently.
"This week has been really incredible. It was a very special week.", says a happy winner Sepp Kuss. "I knew I was in a good form going into the race and I was pretty confident too. But to win three stages and the overall ranking is really special. The team was once again very strong just like the rest of the week. I can't thank them enough for what they have done for me. Halfway through the stage I felt my legs were good. So I decided to play my cards on the final climb and take it safe on the descent. This victory is one for the whole team because without them this was never possible."
Sports director Sierk Jan de Haan was delighted with the performance of his team. "This week was really great. My compliments for the riders. I have seen a team that really goes through fire for each other. Also a big compliments to the staff. They have worked very hard this week to make this all possible.

Saturday, August 11: Stage 5, Canyons Village - Snowbird, 152.6 kilometers (94.8 miles)
Sepp Kuss wins Tour of Utah stage five.
The race: Here's the report from stage winner Sepp Kuss' LottoNL-Jumbo team.
Sepp Kuss has impressively won his second stage victory in the Tour of Utah. The 23-year old American excelled at Snowbird Mountain and takes his second victory as a professional cyclist. In the general classification he has extended his lead. He also takes over the lead in the mountain classification from Daan Olivier.
The victory of Kuss is the twenty-fifth for Team LottoNL-Jumbo this season.
The queen stage to Snowbird Mountain was perfectly controlled by Team LottoNL-Jumbo throughout the day. Sepp Kuss was put in an ideal position by his teammates at the foot of the final climb, after which Kuss started his solo with eight kilometers from the finish line.
"All credits for the team today. They have done a great job", a happy Kuss said after his win. "The team had everything under control from the start. They were really good and rode incredibly smart too covering all the breakaways. We never got under any pressure or problems. Everyone has contributed to this victory and rode above expectations. It certainly gave me extra motivation to go for the stage victory and reward them for that. I am very proud of this great team."
Sports director Sierk Jan de Haan concurred with his team captain. "This win is one for the entire team here in Utah. Everyone has given their maximum. Then Sepp had to finish it which gave him the boost to win. I can not be more than proud. "

Friday, August 10: Stage 4, Salt Lake City - Salt lake City, 110.1 kilometers (110.1 miles)
Jasper Philipsen (right) just wins the fourth stage of the Tour of Utah.
The race: Here's the report from stage winner Jasper Philipsen's Hagens Berman Axeon team.
Salt Lake City, Utah - After narrowly missing his first professional win on U.S. soil on Thursday’s stage 3 at the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah, Jasper Philipsen captured the victory he so badly wanted the day before, besting Travis McCabe [UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling] in an extremely close photo finish.
“It looked like the breakaway with Eddie would hold to the finish line, but on the last lap it exploded, and Sean bridged up to the lead group,” said Philipsen. “I was super nervous in the final and didn’t know what was going to happen. But I was ready for the sprint and it all came together in the end.”
Philipsen described being on the “right wheel” of McCabe as they barreled toward the finish. Where yesterday McCabe was able to hold off the Hagens Berman Axeon rider and win by a wheel’s length, today, Philipsen was in the “right spot at the right time” to even the score with McCabe and get the victory.
Friday’s win marks the fourth time the first-year Axeon rider from Belgium has climbed onto the top spot on the podium. Philipsen notched two early season wins at Le Triptyque des Monts et Chateaux and later earned a victory on stage 3 at the Giro d’Italia U23.
“I felt a bit disappointed yesterday that I couldn’t finish it off for the team because they did such a great effort,” said Philipsen. “That gave me the motivation and the belief that I could make it up today. It was a close one again, but I’m super happy it turned in our direction today.”
Sport director Jeff Louder felt that the team had a great day of racing in Salt Lake City. Eddie Anderson’s significant effort getting into the early breakaway, surviving all 10 laps, and was still there when Bennett made the massive move to bridge to the remaining leaders, gave the guys the chance they needed.
“Eddie being in the break gave us a win-win situation knowing that we had the front of the race covered,” said Louder. “The guys in the peloton avoided all the attrition, stayed cool, and put Philipsen into the right place for the final sprint. Jasper showed amazing strength and tenacity by fighting all the way to the line for the win. It was a great individual result, but also highlighted the strength and solidarity of the entire team and I couldn't be happier.”

Thursday, August 9: Stage 3, Antelope Island - Layton, 167.4 kilometers (106.0 miles)
Travis McCabe gets his second stage win in this Tour of Utah.
The race: Here's the report from stage winner Travis McCabe's UnitedHealthcare team.
Travis McCabe became the winningest rider at the Tour of Utah after claiming his second victory on the third stage of Tour of Utah in a bunch gallop. The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling rider sprinted to the line in Layton ahead of Jasper Philipsen (Axeon) and Edwin Avila (Israel Cycling Academy) after four hours of racing under the hot, Utah sun.
Feeling confident in his kick, McCabe jumped with 250 meters to go and entered into a neck and neck drag race with Philipsen, eventually pulling ahead moments before the finish.
“I was definitely worried about Jasper at first, but once I got in front of him I knew I could hold him off,” McCabe said. “Really, today was a team win because the guys did so much early on to make sure they got into the break and kept me hydrated and fresh for the finish. It’s just great to win again.”
At 168 kilometers, today’s stage was the longest of the tour. Endless water bottles couldn’t stop the salt from forming on the riders’ jerseys as they fought to establish a break in the opening moments. The team’s plan was to have representation in the break, because they knew if they didn’t, a lot of responsibility was going to be in their shoulders.
It took almost 80 kilometers for a break of 10 to get going, but finally one took off, and breakaway specialist Jonny Clarke was part of it.
“Time gaps were so big after Mt. Nebo that it was a good chance for the break to make it to the line today, hence it taking 80km to get established,” Clarke said. “Rob Britton was in the break, he’s only two minutes down on the GC, so that was the nail in the coffin for the break. Honestly, I was more out there to give my sprinters an easy ride in the back and it worked great.”
Clarke and Britton were the last riders from the breakaway to be caught with two laps to go, and from there Jelly Belly took charge until the young Hagens Berman Axeon team burst to the front for Philipsen. McCabe’s lead out rider, Seba Haedo was able to overcome the Axeon train and get to the front, but Philipsen jumped on the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling rider’s wheel, with McCabe right behind. After Haedo pulled off, it was a drag race to the line, with McCabe pulling ahead by a wheel length.
“The plan was to use Haedo to get into position and lead me out, saving the other guys for the climbs the next three days,” McCabe said. “It worked out perfectly, we kind of surfed the Axeon lead out train until about 500 meters to go. Then I had Haedo go full out to place me in good position. I knew it was still bit early, so I let Jasper jump in on to Haedo’s wheel. I wasn’t really concerned though because I knew it was a crosswind and an uphill fitness and I felt confident in my kick. So, I jumped with about 250 meters to go and it turned into a drag race to the line.”
Tomorrow’s Salt Lake City Circuit Race stage is another opportunity for the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling team to shine. At 114km, it’s a short, but lumpy affair around the metropolitan area.

Wednesday, August 8: Stage 2, Payson - Payson, 142.6 km (88.6 miles)
The day's top three, from the left: Neilson Powless (2nd), Sepp Kuss (1st) & Kyle Murphy (3rd).
The race: Here's the story from stage winner Sepp Kuss' LottoNL-Jumbo team.
Sepp Kuss has impressively won the second stage in the Tour of Utah. The 23-year-old American soloed, after an attack of fifty kilometres, to his first victory as a professional cyclist in the centre of Payson City. With his victory, Kuss takes over the lead in the general classification.
Neilson Powless completed the party for Team LottoNL-Jumbo by finishing second. He also holds this position in the general classification. Daan Olivier also joined his teammates on the podium as leader in the mountain classification.
The victory of Kuss is the twenty-fourth for Team LottoNL-Jumbo this season.
"It feels really amazing to have my first win as a professional on a team as Team LottoNL-Jumbo”, Kuss said after his win. “I felt really good today. I knew it would be possible to do something on the climb. And if I were really good, I could go for the win. I tried to tell myself to stay relaxed. Once one of the top riders attacked, I followed easily. I just kept going. I hoped some more guys would join me, but it ended up as a solo ride. There was mostly headwind until the finish, but I managed to hold on. It feels really special.”
“Sepp showed he’s the best climber in this peloton”, Sports Director Sierk Jan de Haan said. “The last forty kilometres were mostly downhill, but it was hard because of the headwind and short climbs. That he managed to win this stage after fifty kilometres solo, is a great achievement.”
De Haan also praises the other riders in the team. “Neilson’s second place is a great performance. Besides that, Daan is still in the mountain jersey. We were with three guys on the podium today. I’m really proud of our riders.”

Tuesday, August 7: Stage 1, Cedar City - Cedar City, 162.5 km (101.0 miles)
Travis McCabe wins stage one.
The race: Here's the report from GC leader Tejay van Garderen's BMC team.
7 August, 2018, Cedar City, Utah (USA): Tejay van Garderen, who took victory on yesterday's prologue, successfully defended the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah leader's jersey today after stage 1 came down to a bunch sprint that saw Brent Bookwalter power to fourth on the line.
Strong teamwork from van Garderen's teammates saw the race leader well-positioned when the sprint was launched before he eventually crossed the line in the main bunch to secure a second day in the yellow jersey.
Earlier in the stage, the peloton, led by BMC Racing Team, chased down several opening moves before a four-rider breakaway was finally allowed to go clear after 17km, of the 162.5km out-and-back course. The leaders quickly built up an advantage that was sitting at around five minutes on the early slopes of the first of two categorized climbs, the category one ascent to Cedar Breaks, which at around 25km long had pitches of up to 15% in places.
As the breakaway swept up the KOM points, the peloton had pulled the gap back to 4'30" and it continued to hover around four minutes on the descent towards the base of the second climb, the category four ascent up to the Bristlecone KOM.
After an increase in pace at the front of the bunch, the leaders' advantage had been pulled back to inside three minutes on the lower slopes of the climb with Kilian Frankiny and stagiaire, Alexander Evans taking over the responsibility of setting the tempo in support of van Garderen, who was sat in the wheels of Joey Rosskopf and Bookwalter slightly further back.
It wasn't long before the breakaway split and at the 55km to go mark, it was Daan Olivier (Team LottoNL-Jumbo) who was leading the race solo while behind his fellow leaders were beginning to be swept up by the rest of the field.
Olivier's advantage had shrunk to 2'30" as he began the downhill run into the first of three laps of the 4.3km circuit around Cedar City and he was eventually caught and passed by Luis Lemus (Israel Cycling Academy) with 16km to go while the peloton sat just 15 seconds back.
With the race coming back together at the start of the first lap, the bunch sprint looked inevitable as the speed being set neutralized all late attacks and after a chaotic battle for position in the closing kilometers of the day, Travis McCabe (UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling) took the win with Bookwalter showing his form to power to fourth on the line.
With van Garderen guided safely through the fast, furious and hectic finale, he continues to lead the General Classification two seconds ahead of McCabe and four seconds in front of teammate, Rosskopf.
Quotes From the Finish Line:
Tejay van Garderen:
"Our plan coming into today's stage was to let a breakaway get up the road and to stop the attacks. We found a breakaway that we were comfortable with and then we let them get some time before establishing a chase. We were banking on a couple of sprinters' teams coming in to help close the gap in the final so, that we didn't have to do all the work today. We were able to keep things relatively under control on what was a hot and hard day."
"It was a hard tempo today and I felt comfortable but I don't think I will really know where my form is until some of the other GC guys start making moves and I will see how I respond to those."
"We saw our two stagiaires working well on the front today and I like having them on the team. They are always really motivated and eager and willing to do whatever the task is. It is a great opportunity for them but it is also a great opportunity for us to not only teach them but to also get an extra helping hand in races like these."
Brent Bookwalter:
"Coming into Utah I have felt good. I was able to enjoy some time at home which definitely helped me feel rejuvenated and helped me find the enjoyment of the sport as I started more specific preparation for this race. I was a little disappointed with yesterday's prologue but historically I have always performed better during time trials on the TT bike rather than on the road bike."
"Looking at today's stage, the last three laps were definitely USA criterium style and maybe even more hectic as there was less control. On paper, there are some strong sprinters here but they didn't show themselves today and no team thought it was worthwhile to take control. So, that made it a free for all and by that point, it was just me and Joey who were left to take the opportunity as everyone else had put in a full effort earlier on in the day. It was really a balance of looking after Tejay and trying to go for it. I had it in the back of my mind that if I could be in a good position on the final corners that I could go for the sprint. I just missed a podium position and the time bonus that comes with that, but even without that, I am still satisfied. To be committed to the race and in the thick of the action is encouraging and inspiring. I always say that I want to do a good performance every day whether that's working for Tejay or trying to do something for myself."
Sports Director, Jackson Stewart:
"It was a hard start with our guys defending the yellow jersey and trying to make sure that the right guys went in the breakaway and that we didn't let any of the really strong climbers or too big of a group go clear as it would have been difficult to bring back. I think we did a really good job at the beginning and then Tejay got a flat tire at a bad moment and I think it was when we were bringing him back up to the bunch that those four guys were able to get away. They were all decent climbers and we didn't necessarily want that but the guys controlled it well. It was a really hot and hard day and we didn't get that much help but eventually, Trek-Segafredo started to work with us but it was a pretty big effort from the team today."
"The sprinters' teams didn't really take over in the finish which made everything pretty chaotic at the end and I think it will be interesting to see how the next two sprint days pan out as we saw today that you can lose control really quickly. For us, Brent stepped up in the finish. He is so well-rounded and he normally always has a good sprint so he was free to try something in the final. He knows how to ride the bike well and just got beat on the line."

Monday, August 6: St. George prologue 5.3 km (3.3 miles) time trial
BMC took the top three places in the Tour of Utah's prologue, starting with Tejay van Garderen's 1st place.
The race: Here's the report from winner Tejay van Garderen's BMC team.
6 August, 2018, St. George, Utah (USA): The Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah got off to a perfect start for BMC Racing Team today with Tejay van Garderen securing victory on the 5.3km prologue after a strong day of racing from the team saw him joined on the podium by Joey Rosskopf and Tom Bohli.
Van Garderen was the final rider to start his effort and looked strong as he quickly settled into his rhythm over the opening part of the out-and-back course which saw the road rising steadily for the first 2km before a short descent down to the turnaround.
The American rider, who is racing in Utah for the first time since 2011, continued to lay it all out on the road as he climbed back up to the peak of the course before stopping the clock after a fast and straight downhill run into the finish line at 6'27", four seconds quicker than the previous benchmark set by his BMC Racing Team teammate and US national time trial champion, Rosskopf.
Van Garderen was also joined on the podium by Tom Bohli, who was one of the first riders to roll off the ramp in St. George and spent a significant amount of time in the hot seat after demonstrating his time trialling prowess earlier in the day by posting a time of 6'33" to finish third.
The Winner's Interview with Tejay van Garderen
Congratulations, Tejay. Talk us through today's prologue.
"Pacing was certainly important today. You started out uphill and the roads were wide so, it was a little deceiving. I think the gradient was higher than people expected which meant that you had to over-pace and then try to recover a little bit on the downhill then over-pace again on the way out before you were basically screaming at 75km/h all the way to the finish. On a course like this, you don't want to blow up but at the same time, you want to gauge your effort well."
You're coming into the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah after the Tour de France. What made you decide to race here this week?
"I have the Tour de France in my legs and I was thinking that after a week of recovery I could either start training again and start hitting set on the power meter and cranking out efforts on the climb or, I could come to race in Utah. I love Utah and I have a long history here. My first professional victory was at this race in 2011 in the time trial and even before that the Junior National Championships were in Park City in 2005 or 2006 and I have good memories from there too."
"I came here to have some fun ultimately and to keep the body rolling. I told myself that if there was a chance for a result that I would take it and today was a great opportunity to do that."
How did you feel coming into the race after such a short break?
"I felt good today. After the Tour, I did a couple of three hour days coming into this race and the rest of them were just easy and purely recovery so, I really had no idea how I was going to respond especially coming into this heat, at altitude, and with such a violent, short effort to tackle. I was stepping into the unknown a little but I was motivated and I went through my normal warm-up routine as if I was starting any other time trial. The legs responded well and as soon as I started pushing on the climb, I felt like it could be a good effort."
Quotes From the Finish Line
Joey Rosskopf:
"A prologue, or any stage 1 time trial, is a nice way to get the nerves out of the way so when you start the first official road stage you already have a ranking and that gives the race a little more structure and maybe some more predictability. Today's race was a pretty violent effort as you were going as hard as you could on the climbs but then barely pedalling on the descents. It wasn't your normal pacing strategy so there was plenty to think about out there today even though it was such a short course."
"Today's result definitely gives us a lot of confidence going into the rest of the Tour. You can never plan to go 1-2-3 and it wasn't like we talked about doing that and named who would place where coming into the day so, today's result is a really nice surprise."
Tom Bohli:
"This is my third Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah so, I know what lays ahead of me as a non-climber and I know what my role is for the team. I was really looking forward to the prologue today. I knew it wasn't a typical prologue and I like technical prologues on the TT bike. I also knew that my teammates were going to do well so I am really happy with today's result."
Sports Director, Jackson Stewart:
"Today was a fantastic start to the race for us. We came into the day thinking that this would be a good day for Tom Bohli. He is a prologue specialist and we knew he had done a lot of work for today and thought that he would be able to win the race convincingly. He really set the bar high and then we started the other guys later in the day as we thought that the wind would have calmed down. So, we really hedged our bets on the front end and the back end of the day and our final riders did amazingly. First, Joey Rosskopf broke the time set by Bohli and then Tejay van Garderen knocked it out of the park. It was impressive to see."
"Today's result really sets us up well for the rest of the race. It definitely gives us some extra motivation and some more confidence looking ahead. I think now that Tejay has won the first stage, on a course that he is maybe not a specialist on, it will definitely give him a boost as we look ahead to the other stages which we know he can be good on."
