Weather at the race city of Wieliczka at 2:15 PM, local time: 28C (83F), fair, with the wind from the northwest at 21 km/hr (12 mph). There is just a 2% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from stage & GC winner Brandon McNulty's UAE Team Emirates-XRG.

The flying American Brandon McNulty delivered a sensational performance in the final 12.5 km individual time trial in Poland today, capturing both the stage win and the overall general classification at the 82nd Tour de Pologne.

After a grueling week of racing across seven stages, including the mountainous queen stage to Bukowina Tatrzańska, McNulty entered the final day just seconds behind race leader Victor Langellotti (INEOS Grenadiers). In a masterful time trial around the Wieliczka Salt Mine, McNulty powered through the course in 14:31—a time 46 seconds faster than Langellotti—and secured the stage triumph. The consistent showing from the entire team throughout the week was also rewarded with first prize in the team classification.

McNulty: “The way the course was today it was really an all-out effort on the climb and then just a matter of holding on on the descent and flat run-in. At the split I knew I was ahead but you can never be comfortable until the finish line. I’m super happy. It’s my first World Tour win in a GC.

"I didn’t have the perfect start to the season,  I had some illness and this is my first win of the year. Today was nice to get a win for Baroncini, who crashed out earlier in the week. We’ve had him in our minds since he left and we wish for him the best in his recovery.”

The week began dramatically when Filippo Baroncini was involved in a heavy crash on Stage 1, forcing his withdrawal from the race. The Italian suffered multiple injuries and is currently safely back in Italy where he is expected to undergo surgery for his facial injuries and begin his recovery.

The victory of McNulty marks a successful week of stage racing for the Emirati squad, with Isaac Del Toro having claimed the overall GC at the Vuelta a Burgos in Spain yesterday.

The win tally for the team continues the grow, with 72 victories on the board so far this season.

Weather at the finish city of Bukowina Tatrzańska at 2:20 PM, local time: 24C (76F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 8 km/hjr (5 mph). There is a 5% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner and new GC leader Victor Langellotti's Team INEOS Grenadiers.

Victor Langellotti took his first WorldTour win on the penultimate stage in Tour de Pologne and sailed into the GC lead.

Having been in the break of 15 riders on a punchy stage six in Poland, Langellotti unleashed a powerful sprint to take his first WorldTour win and also sail into the yellow jersey.

With six category one climbs over the 147km stage, an early break was caught with around 50km remaining as the peloton headed up the Rzepiska climb.

Attacks came up the climb with 15 riders managing to break free, including Langellotti. The peloton continued to ebb and flow on the undulating section to the final climb of the day, but GC leader Paul Lapeira (Decathlon AG2R La Mondaile) dropped off the pace.

The peloton together after four Cat one climbs and 40km and two more climbs to go

With Langellotti only eight seconds back on the GC, he dug deep in the break and put down an incredible sprint to beat Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates - XRG) and take the yellow jersey.

Having won a stage and had two second place finishes already, Ben Turner continues to lead the points classification.

A tough start to the day saw Magnus Sheffield and Michal Kwiatkowski unable to start the stage after developing an illness overnight.

Tomorrow’s final stage will see the riders tackle an individual time trial before crowning the overall winner.

Matthew Brennan wins stage five.

Tour de France: 2021

Bill & Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, 2021: The Little Cannibal Dominates is available in both Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Zakopane at 2:30 PM, local time: 24C (76F), fair, with the wind from the west-northwest at 13 km/hr (8 mph). There is a 3% chance of rain.

The race: Pepijn Reinderink (Soudal Quick-Step) & Stanislaw Aniolkowski (Cofidis) did not start.

Here's the report from stage winner Matthew Brennan's Team Visma | Lease a Bike:

Matthew Brennan has impressively won the fifth stage of the Tour de Pologne. The 20-year-old Brit catapulted himself forward in the curvy finish street and sprinted to his eleventh victory of the season with a great display of power.

"I was actually a little too far back going into the last corner", Brennan said afterwards. "When I saw the 300-metre sign, I tried to move up as quickly as possible. All I could think was, “let's go”. I decided to go for it and I had confidence in my sprint. That's essential at a moment like that."

For the second day in a row, the riders tackled a stage of more than 200 kilometres. Four riders formed the day's breakaway and gained a maximum six-minute lead. Led by Team Visma | Lease a Bike, the leading group was caught with 10 kilometres to go.

This led to a new wave of attacks, but with 2 kilometres to go, everything came back together. Brennan found himself in the depleted peloton, but had to fight his way to the front to sprint for the win. Thanks to an impressive sprint, he secured his team's 25th victory of the season. Thanks to Cian Uijtdebroeks, who took the stage and overall victory in the Tour de l'Ain, the team now has 27 victories.

"The team did a great job", Brennan continued. "They kept me out of the wind all day. Especially on the way to the climbs, they took the stress off me so I could concentrate on the sprint."

Sports director Jesper Mørkøv also expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance. "This was a real team effort. Niklas led for half the stage, and the guys put Matthew in perfect position for the final climb. We can be really proud of the team today."

The final sprint was a masterpiece, according to Mørkøv. "Matthew was a little far back in the last kilometre, but with 300 metres to go, he saw an opening and went for it. The others didn't stand a chance. That was amazing. We are very happy with how our week is going so far."

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Paul Magnier's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Paul Magnier unleashed another phenomenal burst of speed on his way to a spectacular success at the end of the Tour de Pologne’s stage four, which concluded in Cieszyn, on an uphill drag where the 21-year-old gave absolutely no chance to his opponents.

One of the season’s most successful young riders, Magnier came into the race with four wins under his belt captured since the start of the year, and after finishing a close second on the opening day, he now powered to a dominant victory after launching his sprint early, a move that caught everyone by surprise. In the blink of an eye, Paul opened up an insurmountable gap, which he kept until the line, where he celebrated his tenth success on the pro scene.

“I’m very happy, because it’s my maiden World Tour win, and it makes me proud I could get it in this beautiful T-Rex Quick-Step jersey. It was my goal to score a victory this week and I’m delighted I did it today, on this finish which really suited me and where I could show my explosiveness. A big thanks to my teammates for controlling the stage, which wasn’t an easy one with the presence of those climbs in the middle part, and bringing me in a perfect position for the last kilometers.”

“It’s my fifth victory of the year and it feels great, especially as my parents were present here today. At the same time, it’s a success that gives me a lot of confidence for the next goals of the year. I want to take some more wins and this one here in Poland is great for the morale. We’ll see what we can do in the next stages, if I can get another good result, I will go for it; if not, I will gladly help my teammates”, said Paul – who hit the T-Rex pose as he crossed the line – after delivering our team’s 20th victory at the Tour de Pologne.

Weather at the start/finish city of Wałbrzych at 2:10 PM, local time: 18C (65F), fair, with the wind from the northwest at 14 km/hr (10 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Because of a crash, the stage was neutralized with 15 km to go. The gaps in the results of this stage do not affect the GC.

Here's the report from stage winner Ben Turner's Team INEOS Grenadiers:

Ben Turner unleashed his power to sprint to victory after a punchy stage three in Poland.

Turner took his second professional win after being perfectly set up by Polish national Michal Kwiatkowski, allowing Turner to unleash his sprint and take the win with his arms in the air.

The 159km stage saw the riders tackle seven categorised climbs, with an early break kicking off proceedings. A crash in the peloton behind with 15km to go saw the race neutralised, and the break was caught soon after the race restarted. As a result of the neutralisation, it was decided by the organisers that the gaps in the stage results would not count toward the GC.

Victor Langellotii now sits second on the GC, having also helped Turner in his lead out to the finish.

After crashing yesterday in the second stage, Bob Jungels was unable to start today’s stage and is being closely monitored by the team’s medical staff.

Weather at the start/finish city of Karpacz aty 2:45 PM, local time: 19C (67F), cloudy, with the wind from the soutwest at 16 km/hr (10 mph). There is a 50% chance of rain at 4:00 PM.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Mathias Vacek's Team Lidl-Trek:

After an uneventful opening stage, the second day of Tour de Pologne gave a glimpse of the excitement to come. The 148-kilometer route was punctuated by a series of climbs throughout, and ending with the day’s longest climb to the finish in Karpacz.

Coming in to the finish the group still numbered around 30 riders, with Andrea Bagioli, Sam Oomen and Mathias Vacek all present. The finish, with its challenging but not ultra-steep climb, suited Vacek well, who was well-positioned near the head of the group. Jan Christen (UAE) launched a long sprint from 500 meters out, with Vacek tracking him. As a small group came back on level terms. Paul Lapeira (DAT), having benefitted in the slipstream of Vacek, sprinted over the top. Vacek’s response was strong, but the finish line came too soon for him to catch the Frenchman.

“It was a fast stage, quite short and I knew the biggest selection would be on the last climb with a lot of storng climbers here. I was focused on the final, and with the help of the team I had a really good position and didn’t have to use much energy before. I felt really good in the last climb and had the wheel of Christen, who went quite early and exploded a bit. We slowed down and Lapeira came from the back and he had an extra punch and we couldn’t follow. I still had a bit of energy in the legs and tried my best to catch him, but he was stornger today and I took second. It was a good effort and I’m happy with the performance. Now we focus on the next days and try to maintain the position in GC and try to win. Good day and good team effort. If we continue like this it will be good!” - Mathias Vacek

Weather at the finish city of Legnica at 2:10 PM, local time: 20C (68F), cloudy, with the wind from the south at 13 km/hr (8 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain. There was rain at the start.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Paul Magnier's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Paul Magnier finished a close second on the opening stage of the race after a hugely impressive sprint that saw the young Frenchman come from a long way back to conclude just behind Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease a Bike) in Legnica. It was the tenth podium of the season for the 21-year-old from Grenoble, who was slowed down twice in the finale, the first time by a crash that took place ahead of the last kilometer, and later just as he was preparing to sprint, with 200 meters to go.

Wrocław, the capital of Lower Silesia and a city that has a special connection to Polish cycling, hosted the start of the 82nd Tour de Pologne on Monday, when the peloton embarked on a fairly flat one that took them to Legnica. Ayco Bastiaens, who recently signed a new contract with T-Rex Quick-Step, again did a huge amount of work at the front of the bunch, bringing back the escapees with around 40 kilometers to go.

Olav Kooij is the day's fastest rider.

In the sprint, a fragmented one, Magnier was again remarkable as he took runner-up, a result that will see him sport the points jersey on the second stage, one that should bring the first differences between the general classification contenders.

“I am pretty content with my result. It was a very hectic finale and I had to find the space to sprint. I am happy I could do that and show my speed, as it gives me confidence for the next sprinters’ stages here in Poland”, Paul said at the finish.
