Weather at the start/finish city of Eibar at 2:30 PM, local time: 20C (68F), cloudy, with the wind from the west-southwest at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is a 24% chance of rain, rising to 90% at 4:00 PM.

The stage: Eibar will once again host the final stage, with both the start and finish lines located in Plaza Unzaga. With 7 mountain passes, 3 of which are Category 3, over the more than 150 km route. This year, the very hard climb to Krabelin will happen at the beginning of the stage, so an attack from afar to win the txapela cannot be ruled out. Major changes compared to 2024 involve two climbs to Trabakua, the elimination of Gorla and the addition of Karabieta to reach Bergara. Undoubtedly a very lively stage that will decide who wins the Itzulia 2025.

The race: Here's the report from winner Joao Almeida's UAE Team Emirates-XRG:

Rounding off a tremendous week of racing for UAE Team Emirates-XRG at Itzulia Basque Country, João Almeida beat Enric Mas (Movistar) in a two-up sprint to win stage 6 and seal the overall victory of the race. In doing so, the Portuguese climber takes UAE Team Emirates-XRG’s 26th and 27th wins of the season, whilst claiming his first stage race victory since signing for the team in 2022.

The start line in Eibar for the final stage.

The final day in Eibar was made all the sweeter by the performance of Isaac del Toro, who gave his every last ounce of energy to take fourth place across the line and seize the young rider’s classification at the last opportunity. Ending the race with the blue jersey on his back, Del Toro can be proud of his efforts in the Basque Country, as can the rest of his UAE Team Emirates-XRG teammates.

In the traditional, tough final stage that saw the peloton tackle no less than seven categorised climbs, Marc Soler, Brandon McNulty and Felix Großschartner were by the side of their teammate and race leader throughout the afternoon. Keen to repay their efforts, Almeida looked to not only finish the job and take the general classification victory, but go in search of a second stage win of the week.

It was on the penultimate climb that the damage was done, with the peloton torn to shreds as heavy rainfall ensued and McNulty produced a vicious turn of pace at the front. Handing over the reins to Großschartner halfway up the category one test, McNulty stayed in the wheels alongside Del Toro and Soler, as the Austrian went to work at denting the morale of their rivals. With every turn of the pedal, it seemed as though another rider was dispatched from the back of the bunch, until only Almeida, Mas and a handful of other contenders remained.

Between here and the finish, the race was in tatters. Ultimately, Mas and Almeida proved the strongest, whilst Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) battled bravely from the breakaway to hang on to third place. Behind the leading duo, the trio of Soler, McNulty and Großschartner marked the chasing groups, as Del Toro squeezed himself to the limit, desperate to finish in as strong a position as possible.

His efforts were rewarded, with fourth place over the line taking him into the blue jersey as the winner of the young rider’s classification. As for Almeida, his battle with Mas went all the way to the line, where the pair sprinted for the stage honours. It was a canny move to take the initiative inside the final 400m and having moved himself to the front, the Portuguese led out the sprint in front of the Spaniard.

Once Almeida had made his charge, there was no coming around the UAE Team Emirates-XRG man. As he roared across the line and celebrated his stage and overall victory, Almeida was able to cheer his fourth win of the season. The 26-year-old also ends Itzulia Basque Country as the winner of the points classification, capping off a brilliant week for himself and the team.

Speaking after the finish, the GC victor was quick to heap the praise on his teammates.

Almeida: “The team did a perfect job today, like every day. We are super strong, we did what we planned to do and then in the end the rain came. It was starting to be a bit dangerous so I never took any risks. I am glad I was in a safe position and I was ahead, so I am super happy with how it went today.

“It was all day a really hard pace, a super hard stage. I think it was the stage of the stages here in Itzulia.

“I think my team deserved another victory and also for myself, so I sprinted for the victory and I think we deserve it.

“This means a lot. There are so many sacrifices for me, for my family and for my girlfriend. It is hard to be a professional rider these days with these high levels, so it means a lot. I think it is the biggest victory of my career, and hopefully, it is the first of [many] more.”

Weather at the finish at Gernika at 2:00 PM, local time: 23C (73F), fair, with the wind from the southeast at 23 km/hr (14 mph). There is a 2% chance of rain.

The stage: The fifth stage arrives in the town of racer Pello Bilbao, Gernika. The Bahrain-Victorious rider has been involved in its design. After the start, the route will head towards Amurrio and then back to Urduña, before leaving for Gernika. Along the way, the riders will have to overcome 4 mountain passes and position themselves well in sections of the last part of the route if they want to clinch the stage.

The race: Ben Tulett (Visma | Lease a Bike) & Kim Heiduk (INEOS Grenadiers) did not start.

Here's a machine-translation of the race organizer's stage five report:

The Itzulia has now reached Orduña, and that meant the start of the fifth stage of this edition. The route wasn't as demanding as the previous two days, but with narrow roads and constant ups and downs until reaching the finish in Gernika-Lumo. A very special stage for Pello Bilbao, who designed part of the stage.

Pre-race ceremonies: Team INEOS Grenadiers riders are presented.

From the first climb of the day, the attacks and the breakaway of the day began, with Pello Bilbao, Bruno Armirail, Ben Healy, Alex Baudin, Warren Barguil, and Julian Alaphilippe. A very high-level breakaway.

The frontrunners achieved a maximum gap of 2'45" over the peloton led by UAE Team Emirates-XRG. The leader's team was constantly monitoring the gap.

After completing all the day's qualifying climbs, with 56 kilometers remaining, Ben Healy attacked from the breakaway and managed to open a gap of almost two minutes over the chasing group. The Irish rider rode at high speed towards the finish.

Behind him, a battle within the peloton for positioning and to close the gap to the front of the field made for a very nervous race. Teams like Ineos Grenadiers, Cofidis, and UAE Team Emirates-XRG were pulling the group together.

With 20 kilometers remaining, the chasing group was caught by the peloton. Pello Bilbao's chances of winning the stage on home soil were fading. Still leading the race, with a lead of almost two minutes, was the tireless Ben Healy (EFE, 91), who, at the start, had already signaled that he would try to be in the breakaway.

The stage seemed over, but behind him, in terms of the general classification, the hostilities began. First, Ineos Grenadiers increased the pace, followed by the Movistar Team. On the tough, narrow slopes of the final climb before the finish, individual attacks began by Florien Lipowitz and Alex Aranburu. The yellow jersey responded well to the attacks, always covered by teammates. With just 15 kilometers to go, Max Schachmann lost contact with the leading group.

The stage winner was ultimately Ben Healy, who finished almost two minutes ahead of the group. It looks like everything will be decided on the sixth and final stage.

Why Your Bike is Made in Asia

Bill McGann’s book Why Your Bike Is Made in Asia: My career in bicycles as I watched two continents squander an industry is available in print, Kindle eBook & Audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Markina-Xemein at 1:50 PM, local time: 21C (69F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the northeast at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The stage: No respite as the race arrives in Bizkaia after 3 stages. The cyclists will once again encounter 7 mountain passes, including the Category 1 Izua pass. A climb that will undoubtedly decide who wins the stage and even make a difference in the general classification. The climb will not follow the main road nor the Krabelin to Arrate ascent but depart from the Matsaria industrial estate on a very narrow road between farmhouses with 20% gradients.

The race: Mathieu Burgaudeau (Team TotalEnergies), Anders Foldager (Jayco-AlUla) & Robbe Dhondt (Team Picnic-PostNL) did not start.

Here's the race report from winner Joao Almeida's UAE Team Emiratres-XRG:

Stage 4 of Itzulia Basque Country was an excellent affair for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, who not only claimed the stage victory and lead of the race through João Almeida, but also placed second on the day with Isaac del Toro and grabbed the King of the Mountains jersey through Marc Soler. Conquering the seventh and final categorised climb of a brutal stage, Almeida powered away from his rivals and rode alone to the finish in Markina-Xemein.

Stage four gets rolling.

With his teammate Soler up the road in the day’s breakaway, Almeida could bide his time in the peloton and wait for the perfect moment to attack, having begun the day only four seconds down on race leader Max Schachmann (Soudal Quick-Step). Once Soler had taken enough KOM points to ride into that jersey out front, the peloton approached the breakaway and at the foot of the final climb, it was all to play for.

As the only category 1 test of the day, the final climb cast an imposing figure over the day’s action. Standing at 9.6% for 3.5km, the Izua saw Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious) make an initial move before Almeida came to the fore and dropped a stage-winning attack. Cresting the climb with a 30-second advantage, the Portuguese was able to descend to the finish line alone and seal UAE Team Emirates-XRG’s 25th victory of the campaign.

Prior to Almeida’s stage-winning exploits, the day had belonged to teammate Soler, who was on the front foot throughout. After the flag had been dropped in Beasain, the Spaniard was forever on the prowl for an opportunity to claim much-vaunted points in the King of the Mountains classification.

At first, Soler sought his fortune from the peloton, winning the KOM sprint over the first categorised climb after 44.2km. But with this obstacle out of the way, Soler used the second categorised climb to work his way into the breakaway and establish himself as part of its number. With the likes of Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease a Bike), Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) and Mauro Schmid (Jayco AlUla) also in the move, it was soon clear that this breakaway would come to define much of the day.

Over the next four categorised climbs, Soler led the breakaway over the summit each and every time, taking 12 KOM points over the course of the afternoon. With this haul, the Spaniard moves up three places in the classification and now takes a hold of the jersey heading into stage 5. In fact, thanks to the efforts of Brandon McNulty and teammate Almeida through the week, all three UAE Team Emirates-XRG riders sit within the top five in the classification.

With his eyes set on a larger prize, however, Almeida presented himself towards the fore of the peloton as they caught the break at the foot of the final climb. Ramping up to 20% in parts, the Izua climb was a straight-up brute, with the potential to turn the GC on its head. As such, the Portuguese stuck to his own pace as Buitrago made an initial attack for Bahrain Victorious. Little by little, as the sprightly climber was reined in, Almeida nudged his way up the group of favourites and with 2.5km of the climb to go, the 26-year-old made his acceleration.

At first, Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), Clément Champoussin (XDS Astana) and Alex Aranburu (Cofidis) were able to follow the wheel, but before long Almeida was alone and in pursuit of a second victory of the season. Powering away as the climb refused to relent, the UAE Team Emirates-XRG man crested the climb with a 30-second advantage and with a little over 10km to descend to the finish line.

Maintaining his gap to the finish, where teammate Del Toro out-sprinted their rivals to sweep up second place, Almeida did enough to not only win stage 4, but also claim the lead of the race. In doing so, he becomes the first Portuguese rider in history to lead Itzulia Basque Country, whilst he also tops the points jersey classification heading into Friday.

Speaking to the awaiting press after the longest solo victory of his career to date, Almeida reflected on a perfect day for his UAE Team Emirates-XRG squad.

Almeida: “It was a good day. I wasn’t feeling great to be honest but I did my race. The team was amazing once again, I think we deserve it.

“They have been really hard days and we are happy to take the win after two close days. It was good to win again. The plan was to do the best in the last climb and try to go solo. It went perfectly actually so we are happy.

“We also have the team to control. There are two days to go, they are really hard, so we need to keep the focus and do our best day by day.”

Alex Aranburu wins stage three.

Dirty Feet: Early days of the Tour de France

Les Woodland's book Dirty Feet: How the Great Unwashed Created the Tour de France is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

The stage: This could be a decisive stage, together with stage 6. After two relatively easy stages, a tough day awaits involving 7 mountain passes with continuous climbs and descents, despite not a very long route. The mountain passes are not too hard in and of themselves, 5 of which are Category 3, but they will certainly take their toll on the cyclists’ legs over the final kilometres.

Weather at the finish city of Beasain at 2:40 PM, local time: 23C (74F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the north at 11 km/hr (7 mph). There is a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Team Visma | Lease a bike posted this sad note: Following his crash during the second stage of Itzulia Basque Country, Victor Campenaerts will not be starting today’s stage.

And INEOS Grenadiers posted this: Caleb Ewan won’t start today’s third stage of the Itzulia Basque Country. As part of the management of his race programme, he’s returned home.

That left 167 riders on the start line.

Here's a machine-translation of the race organizer's corrected stage three report:

The third stage of the 2025 Itzulia, starting in Zarautz and finishing in Beasain, is a 155-kilometer stage entirely in Gipuzkoa. After the first two stages, the first demanding stage arrives with seven qualifying climbs. Due to its gradient and type of climbs, it could be considered the queen stage along with Stage 6.

The peloton began rolling along the coast with several attempts at a breakaway, but they were unsuccessful until reaching kilometer 48 after descending the Andazarrate mountain pass. A single rider, Bruno Armirail, led the race with a maximum margin of 1 minute 30 seconds over the peloton.

Stage three gets started.

The high pace of the peloton set by the UAE Emirates-XRG team left Bruno Armirail with no room to make up ground. The team of Joao Almedia and Isaac Del Toro worked to complete a very fast stage and gradually eliminate riders towards the end of the stage. The gap between the main group and the breakaway was 40 seconds. On the climb to Santa Ageda (Cat. 2), Pello Bilbao , among others, lost contact with the peloton. On the descent, he tried to rejoin the group but was unsuccessful.

The strong pace at the front meant that Isaac Del Toro Aleksandr Vlasov , and Sepp Kuss gained a few meters of distance on the peloton. Movistar Team and Soudal Quick-Step quickly closed the gap. Bruno Armirail was caught by the peloton with 72 kilometers remaining.

After neutralizing the breakaway, more strong attacks began on the climb to Mandubia (Cat. 2) by UAD Team Emirates-XRG, first with Brandon Mcnulty and then with Isaac Del Toro . The stage was pure action. Florien Lipowitz tried his best to set a very strong pace, making a gap on the chasing group, which included Joao Almedia . He couldn't maintain the gap. At that point, race leader Max Schachmann was losing a few seconds. The attacks continued throughout the climb. With 63 kilometers remaining, Joao Almeida, Brandon Mcnulty, Mattias Skjelmose, Enric Mas, Nelson Oliveira and Harold Tejada built a 12-second lead over the remaining peloton, which included the yellow jersey and the main Red Bull – Bora – Hansgrohe riders. Vlasov and Lipowitz managed to close the gap, but the Almedia team's advance was unstoppable. The entire peloton was in single file.

On the descent to Segura, Marc Soler, Clément Berthet, and Rudy Molard gained a few seconds. The peloton slowed, giving way to the breakaway, which, with 50 kilometers remaining, had lost a minute. After the break, many riders rejoined the peloton.

The climb to Gaintza approached, with Clément Berthet remaining alone in the lead. Behind, the main favorites held their own, but there were no attacks on the tough 20% slopes. The yellow jersey remained in the group.

With 26 kilometers remaining, with a 1-minute gap to the breakaway, Max Schachmann launched an attack on the flat, but without success. Moments earlier, Joao Almeida lost contact with the main group, along with Alex Aranburu and Enric Mas. The Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe team saw this and began to push, eventually building a 30-second lead over the chasing group.

The final climb, Lazkaomendi, would mark the end of the stage. The gap between the breakaway and the main group, which Joao Almeida's group finally joined, was narrowed down to 20 seconds. The riders were struggling on the climb when, during one of Lipowitz's attacks, Schachmann was able to get onto his wheel. The yellow jersey looked very good. The gaps were minimal. With 6 kilometers to go and one to the top of Lazkaomendi, Clément Berthet was neutralized.

Behind them were Alex Aranburu, Enric Más, and Joao Almedia. The Gipuzkoan rider from Cofidis launched a strong attack, which was followed by a change of pace by Romain Gregoire and the yellow jersey. The descent began and they would soon enter the streets of Beasain to face the final straight.

On a steep incline, the Portuguese rider from UAE Emirates launched a change of pace and gained a few meters of distance. With only 4 kilometers remaining, Aranburu was trying to do so, followed by the group of about 15 riders.

With one kilometre to go, Alex Aranburu gained a few metres’ advantage and managed to cross the finish line ahead of Romain Grégoire. Following a review by the VAR officials, Alex Aranburu was disqualified for incorrectly navigating one of the last roundabouts.  This allowed Romain Grégoire  to secure his second Itzulia win.

Hours later, after several objections, the team of stewards decided to return the stage victory to Alex Aranburu. The statement read as follows:

“Following the initial footage received, we made the decision to disqualify rider number 51 for ‘Deviation from the race route constituting an advantage,’ as the images appeared to show that the rider had taken the roundabout in a way that was deviating from the signposted route.

However, after receiving and reviewing additional evidence, including data from Veloviewer, the roadbook, and the team, it became clear that all available information indicated that the roundabout in question was to be taken in the manner chosen by the Cofidis rider.

In accordance with Article 1.2.064 of the UCI regulations, which states that “Riders shall study the course in advance”. In this case, the rider correctly followed the indicated path.

Furthermore, the rider’s advantage continued to increase after exiting the roundabout and all the way to the finish line.

The race organiser was also consulted and confirmed that there had been a signage error at the roundabout in question.

Therefore, the Commissaires’ Panel has decided to overturn its initial decision, and the rider’s passage over the finish line is confirmed as valid”.

Max Schachmann retains the yellow jersey.

Romain Grégoire finishes stage three. Note, he was relegated to second place.

Weather at the finish city of Lodosa at 2:45 PM, local time: 21C (70C), sunny, with the wind from the east-southeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph). No rain is forecast.

The stage: The longest stage this year, at almost 200 km. The entire stage traverses Navarre, from Iruña to Lodosa. The stage will include constant climbs and descents, but just one Category 3 pass. Barring a surprise breakaway, the stage could be decided by a sprint.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Caleb Ewan's Team INEOS Grenadiers.

The second stage of the 2025 Itzulia set off from the streets of Pamplona. Ahead of the start, the peloton rode a section of the famous San Fermín route – a rare and memorable image. With nearly 200 kilometres ahead, it marked the longest stage of the 2025 edition. The whole stage was set to take place in Navarre.

On the start line.

The day’s breakaway took shape in the opening kilometres, comprising five riders. Xabier Isasa (EUS, 134), Tobias Bayer (ADC, 156), Diego Uriarte (EKP, 167), Sinuhé Fernandez (BBH, 187) and Julen Arriola-Bengoa (CJR, 217). The peloton allowed them to gain a maximum lead of nearly 3 minutes.

Diego Uriarte (EKP, 167), wearing the mountains jersey, claimed the 3 points at the San Martin de Unx mountain pass, ensuring he would hold onto the jersey for at least another day.

Behind, Ineos Grenadiers set the pace, ensuring the escapees didn’t gain too much of a lead. It was evident that the team was focusing on stage opportunities for Caleb Ewan (IGD, 17).

At the 40-kilometre mark, Soudal Quick-Step, in the yellow jersey, initiated the chase to reel in the breakaway. The gap to the breakaway stood at two minutes. In the final kilometres, the peloton, led by Visma–Lease a Bike and Soudal Quick-Step, cut the gap to one minute. The breakaway’s chances of contesting the stage were quickly diminishing.

Here they come for the sprint. Sirotti photo

With just 3 kilometres remaining, the breakaway was caught. The fastest riders battled in a tight sprint, which was ultimately claimed by Australian Caleb Ewan (IGD, 17).

The general classification remains the same, with Schachmann retaining the yellow jersey.

The Story of the Giro d’Italia, vol.1 Shade Vise sunglass holder Paris-Roubaix: The Inside Store

Monday, April 7: Stage 1, Vitoria-Gasteiz - Baskonia-Alavés 16.5 km individual time trial

Stage 1 map & profile

Weather at the start/finish city of Vitoria-Gasteiz at 2:20 PM, local time: 19C (66F), fair, with the wind from the north-northeast at 6 km/hr (4 mph). No rain is forecast.

The stage: Itzulia 2025 will start with an individual time trial as was the case last year. An 18.70 km stage with the start and finish at the Buesa Arena stadium in Vitoria-Gasteiz. The first half of the stage includes several steep climbs which may highlight certain small differences. The steep climb to the village of Arzubiaga will be a scoring stage and decide the first winner of the mountain jersey. The terrain is favourable from Libiano, making this section the fastest and most favourable for specialists.

The stage is not expected to produce big differences between the favourites but will nonetheless decide the first rider to lead the Itzulia 2025.

The race: Here's the report from winner Max Schachmann's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Maximilian Schachmann took his first victory since returning to Soudal Quick-Step at the beginning of the year, after a superb display on stage 1 of the Itzulia Basque Country. It was our team’s tenth success of the season, and one that put the 31-year-old at the top of the general classification of this prestigious World Tour race.

Team Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe rider Florian Lipowitz riding to third place.

Vitoria-Gasteiz welcomed the peloton for the first time in ten years, and the 16.5km stage against the clock held around the capital of the Alava province – despite featuring a third-category climb and some small undulating roads – made for a very fast race, as shown by Schachmann’s average speed: 53.2km/h. The German wasn’t the only Soudal Quick-Step rider to produce a great effort, both Ethan Hayter and Ilan Van Wilder recording strong times that allowed them to finish the stage in the top ten.

“I’m overwhelmed! It’s an amazing feeling to win a World Tour race again, and especially a time trial. It was a hard, high-speed course, with not many sections to recover from the effort, so a short but spicy start, but I left it all out on the road and I’m happy with this success, my fourth in the Basque Country.”

Second-place Joao Almeida.

“The moment I returned to this team a couple of months ago, everybody gave me a warm welcome and a lot of confidence, which was extremely important. We worked hard during the winter with Specialized and Castelli, and all this has paid off. It’s great to take this win and to have three riders in the top ten. It’s a fantastic start for the team here and we’ll continue to do our best this week”, said Max, who holds three jerseys going into Tuesday’s stage between Pamplona and Lodosa: yellow, points and KOM.
