Weather at the city of Salceda de Caselas, on the route, 30 km into the stage at 3:15 PM, local time: 24C (76F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 6 km/hr (4 mph). There is just a 5% chance of rain.

The race: Ibai Azana (Equipo Kerna Pharma) did not start.

Here's the report from stage winner Alessandro Pinarello's NSN Cycling Team:

Alessandro Pinarello enjoyed the best day of his career so far on Saturday, as he briliantly won the final stage of O Gran Camiño and also wrapped up third on GC.

Pinarello showed his class to tame the cobbles on the steep and narrow Monte Trega climb after a punchy 154.7km day of racing, as he outsprinted GC rival Jørgen Nordhagen and overall winner Adam Yates to an eye-catching victory.

This was the 22-year-old’s second GC podium of his career, but the level of competition at the five-day Spanish race beats that of the Tour of Antalya in Turkey, where he finished second two years ago. Pinarello also won the points and King of the Mountains classifications to add further shine to an impressive performance.

“This victory gives me a lot of confidence for the season,” says Pinarello, who never finished lower than eighth across the five days of competitive racing.

“I started well this year in Algarve, and I’ve been chasing a win since then, so I’m really happy.

“Adam Yates did a really good job, and I knew I needed to enter the cobbles first or second. I managed to do that and then pulled all the way to the finish line. I think it was really good, and I’m happy.”

Looking ahead to his next race, the second Giro d’Italia start of his career, he adds: “We’ll see how it goes – I hope to be even better there!”

Pinarello was supported by a relatively young NSN squad in the race, with the six-man roster featuring Fin Tarling (19), Patrick Casey (20), home rider Álvaro Garcia (21), and Zac Marriage (22) from the team’s development arm.

The two other WorldTeam riders in the line-up – Nadav Raisberg and George Bennett – were both involved in the action during Saturday’s finale. Raisberg placed himself in the day’s seven-man breakaway, while Bennett enlivened the race with an attack on Alto da Valga with 30 kilometers remaining.

Weather at the finish city of Xunqueira de Espadanedo at 2:35 PM, local time: 19C (66F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the west-southwest at 6 km/hr (4 mph). No rain is forecast.

The stage: The queen stage of OGC 26 will be Ourense, between Xinzo and Xunqueira de Espadanedo, starring the mountains and the epic fight between riders and with an unprecedented finish in professional cycling.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner and new GC leader Adam Yates' UAE Team Emirates-XRG.

With an all-conquering solo attack on the final climb, Adam Yates won stage 4 of O Gran Camiño and moved into the lead of the race. Making his move with 3.8km to go, the UAE Team Emirates-XRG climber only extended his advantage to the line, picking up his first win of the season.

The Briton proved the strongest rider on the steep slopes of the Alto de Cabeza de Meda, and crossed the line some 46 seconds ahead of the second-placed Jørgen Nordhagen (Visma-Lease a Bike). In doing so, Yates takes a 34-second lead over the young Norwegian into Saturday’s final stage, with teammate Kevin Vermaerke also well placed in 10th overall.

On Friday’s final climb, it was the American of UAE Team Emirates-XRG who made the first attack. With two riders up the road, Vermaerke bridged across to the pair on the climb’s lower slopes. Stretching out for 5.1km at 9.4%, however, the Alto de Cabeza de Meda was always bound to draw the general classifiction contenders into a mano-el-mano showdown.

Recognising the opportunity that lay before him, Yates, who started the day in fourth overall, moved alongside Vermaerke and then attacked from the leading group with 3.8km to ride. It was a probing acceleration to begin with, but the 33-year-old soon found himself with nobody for company, and despite the resistance of the likes of race leader, Alessandro Pinarello (NSN Cycling Team), Yates pushed on.

As the kilometres ticked by, the UAE Team Emirates-XRG only opened up his gap, dancing up the climb in his trademark out-of-the-saddle style. Rounding the final bend, it had long been apparent that Yates would prove the day’s winner, allowing the man from Bury the opportunity to sit up and consider his celebration.

Crossing the line as the stage 4 winner, Yates also took hold of the yellow leader’s jersey. With one more stage to come, he will hope to defend his lead on Saturday and take home another stage race victory for UAE Team Emirates-XRG.

Yates: “It was a super nice day. Actually it was a hard day with a lot of climbing and technical roads. The guys did an amazing job and I managed to finish it off at the end.

“The climb at the end was super steep, and when it is this steep you don’t really feel the wind, so it was also quite hot. We went full gas from the bottom, it was a hard climb, a hard effort, and thankfully I was able to finish off the job.

“I showed today I was in good shape. There was a lot of pressure, not from the team but from a lot of guys, that expected me to perform today. So it was quite tricky to finish it off. I think tomorrow is also another day where we can put together a plan and hopefully try to win again.

“I am not comfortable in the race lead but I have been training super hard and super well. I knew the shape was there, I just needed to put everything together and finish off the job.”

Weather at the finish city of Padron at 3:00 PM, local time: 19C (66F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the south-southwest at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the race report from second-place Alessandro Pinarello's NSN Cycling team.

Alessandro Pinarello boosted his hopes of a strong GC result at O Gran Camiño as he took a season’s best after a combative showing alongside teammate George Bennett on stage 3.

Pinarello placed second in Padrón on Thursday, with Bennett just behind in fourth, and now sits just one second behind race leader Jørgen Nordhagen going into the queen stage of the race on Friday.

Having joined NSN for 2026, Pinarello has quickly shown his stage racing pedigree with the team, finishing 10th in Tirreno Adriatico last month and 12th in February’s Volta ao Algarve.

“I’m happy with today’s result,” says Pinarello, who also moved into the lead of the points classification. “It was very important to have George in front with me today.

“I didn’t expect the attack from [Adam] Yates today, but I had great legs anyway. I hope to go better in the next days because these final two stages will be hard with the mountains.”

The pair went on the attack on the 10.7-kilometer Alto Pico Muralla with a little over 40 kilometres of the stage remaining. Only four other riders, including Nordhagen and eventual stage winner Ivan Romeo, were able to match the NSN duo.

New Zealand champion Bennett notably demonstrated his climbing legs on the Pico Muralla, with his high-tempo ultimately proving successful in preventing a large chase group from ever rejoining the leaders.

Pinarello picked up two and three bonus seconds at the strategically-placed first and third intermediate sprints added by the race organizers following the climb’s descent.

The 22-year-old Italian, Romeo, and home rider Abel Balderstone eventually separated themselves from their three other breakaway companions, before Romeo attack with just over 10 kilometres remaining and soloed to the victory.

Pinarello and Bennett both won their respective sprints for second and fourth with ease.

Bennett says: “It was a really good day for us. It was good that we could use our advantage with the numbers – we were the only team with two riders in the move, so we could play a little bit.

“It worked out really well that I could be aggressive, and Ale could take advantage in the end.

“I think we’re in a really good position going into the final two days – I think I have a bit more freedom after having a puncture in the TT [and being further down on GC]. We saw how hard the race was today, but I think the real race comes in these next two stages. We’re in the fight.”

Weather at the finish city of Barreiros at 2:20 PM, local time: 19C (66F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 18 km/hr (11 mph). There is just a 5% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from fourth-place Patryk Goszczurny's Team Visma | Lease a Bike.

In the second stage of the Spanish stage race, Patryk Goszczurny, Anton Schiffer, and Sven Mernik all finished in the top ten. The Team Visma | Lease a Bike riders survived a challenging finale but just missed out on the podium. Victory went to Carlos Canal.

A day after the opening time trial, the peloton prepared for the first road stage. The second stage covered 150 kilometers from Vilalba to Barreiro, featuring two categorized climbs along the way, including the punchy Alto de Noceda in the finale.

The early part of the stage was shaped by a breakaway of eight riders. The peloton quickly allowed the group to build a significant lead. Within the peloton, the Team Visma | Lease a Bike riders looked alert, with the yellow-and-black squad consistently positioned at the front. As the race approached the final climb, the gap to the breakaway rapidly decreased. Driven by the young Team Visma | Lease a Bike squad, the last early attackers were caught with around fifteen kilometers to go.

On the Alto de Noceda, the peloton split into several groups. Team Visma | Lease a Bike was well represented in a leading group of about twenty riders. Alongside Goszczurny, Schiffer, and Mernik, Tijmen Graat and Jørgen Nordhagen were also part of the front group. In the sprint, Goszczurny ultimately finished fourth, closely followed by teammates Schiffer (5th) and Mernik (7th). Nordhagen, meanwhile, moved up to third place in the general classification.

Sports director Robert Wagner reflected afterward: “We finished with three riders in the top ten of the stage results, so there are certainly still areas for improvement that we can take forward,” he said. “The goal was to sprint for the win with Patryk, which unfortunately just fell short. What stands out most to me is how strong our riders were today. We had five riders in the decisive move, which says enough. Our other goal was to defend Jørgen’s position in the general classification, and we did that very well. We’re looking ahead to the coming stages with confidence.”

Stage 1 map & profile

Julius Johansen on his stage-winning ride.

Story of the Giro d'Italia, volume 1

Bill and Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, A Year-by-Year History of the Tour of Italy, Vol 1: 1909 - 1970 is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the race city of Torre de Hércules (A Caruña) at 2:50 PM, local time: 19C (66F), mix of clouds and sun, with the wind from the west-southwest at 18 km/hr (11 mph). There is just a 3% chance of rain.

The race: First rider off was Pelayo Merino (Meridian Racing) at 2:51.

Here's the report from stage winner Julius Johansen's UAE Team Emriates-XRG:

In stage 1 of O Gran Camiño, Julius Johansen rocketed to the first professional victory of his career. The UAE Team Emirates-XRG powerhouse produced an epic ride against the clock to win the individual time trial and move into the race lead.

Fresh from helping his teammates throughout the spring Classics campaign, Johansen got his own chance on Tuesday afternoon and certainly made the most of it. Completing the 15km-long course in 17 minutes and 43 seconds, the 26-year-old was ultimately 15 seconds faster than the second-placed-rider on the day, Rafael Reis (Anicolor/Campicarn).

Johansen is a former teammate of Reis in the Portuguese squad, which made the win all the sweeter.

Johansen: “I am very happy for today, it is my first pro win so I’m extremely proud. It was a very tough day, there was a bit of wind out there and we have a strong peloton here. I knew I was in good shape, but maybe my fiancé was the only person who truly believed in the win. I personally hoped for a top five, but standing here with the victory is just amazing.

“I just saw before I started that Rafael had come in with the best time, and I know Rafael very well from being old teammates with him, and I know how strong he is. But I also knew that there was some strong riders out on the course. So of course this was thrilling, and I am extremely proud. When they told me after the line that I had won, I almost couldn’t believe it.

“It is amazing. It’s very nice to deliver when I have the chance, it is really nice. Of course, I am super proud of this and now there are some days in front of us, and I really think we can win the GC with Adam. So we look forward to the next two days where we have to survive well.

“For the moment, this is something I have looked forward to for the past two weeks so I am very happy with my performance today. It is really nice to deliver.”

As Johansen was storming to a memorable first professional victory, his UAE Team Emirates-XRG teammate Adam Yates was delivering a promising start to the week. Usually a man more at home in the mountains than aboard his time trial bike, Yates quietly got on with his business and rode to sixth place on stage 1.

The result positions the Briton well for a general classification push later in the week.

For the time being, all celebrations and congratulations are owed to the day’s victor, Johansen. One of the most dependable and powerful teammates in the professional peloton, Johansen’s energies are usually spent in the service of others. For this, he always feels the gratitude of his teammates.

But on this special day in mid-April, the Dane also feels the warm congratulations of being the man on the top step of the podium. Not only was he able to celebrate the stage victory, but also the honour of pulling on the O Gran Camiño leader’s jersey.
