Bill & Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, 2021: The Little Cannibal Dominates is available in both Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Dunkerque at 2:20 PM, local time: 12C (55F), cloudy, with the wind from the north at 16 km/hr (10 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: About a third of the way into the stage Davide Cimolai (Movistar) abandoned. Later Pascal Ackermann (Israel-Premier Tech) & Pier André Coté (Israel-Premier Tech) also quit the race.

Here's the report from stage winner Jake Stewart's Team Israel-Premier Tech:

Jake Stewart took his first win in IPT colors on Sunday as he produced a dominant sprint to take the final stage of the 4 Jours de Dunkerque.

After placing second in Friday’s pavé stage, Stewart outlined his finishing speed once again in the port city of Dunkerque, as he comfortably beat Alberto Dainese (TUD) and Thibaud Gruel (GFD) to the line.

Stewart, who is now in his second season with IPT, last enjoyed a race victory at the Tour de l’Ain in July 2023. Coincidentally, all three of his pro wins to date have come in France.

“It feels like a long time coming – I’ve been close, but I’ve never managed to get the job done,” says the 25-year-old British rider. “In this new role I’ve got in the lead-out, it’s not often I get the opportunity to sprint for a win, so when you get one you want to take it with both hands.”

IPT’s time in Northern France has seen both great highs and some unfortunate lows. Pascal Ackermann kickstarted the week by winning the one-day Classique Dunkerque on Tuesday, before Stewart placed ninth and second in stages 2 and 3 of the 4 Jours race as he builds towards the Tour de France.

Ackermann sadly crashed out early on in today’s stage, which looked perfectly suited to the German’s capabilities, after teammate Riley Sheehan had to abandon yesterday’s stage after a fall. Pier-André Côte also left the race today as the result of a crash on Saturday.

Acknowledging the work of his teammates in Sunday’s final stage, Stewart adds: “It has been quite a tough couple of days with the crashes we had, and we really had to rally ourselves during the stage after Ackie went down.

“It got a bit messy coming into the finish, but we know this finish as we raced it last year. We ended up being short on guys last year, and with the riders we were missing today, we knew we had to make our move a bit later than normal.

“We used Schwarzi [Michael Schwarzmann] and his race craft to move us up, and then [Matîs] Louvel pulled a big turn. G [Guillaume Boivin] and I got boxed in a bit coming into the final kilometer, but we managed to wriggle our way out of that. Coming out of the last corner I told him to commit to the line. I knew I was in a good position and I backed my legs.

“I knew from the sprint on Friday that I had the speed. I kicked and saw that I had a gap when I looked under my legs, so it was all about taking it to the line. It’s always a nice feeling when you win with clean air, and you don’t have to worry about nailing a bike throw!”

Weather at the finish city of Cassel at 2:20 PM, local time: 16C (60F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the north at 24 km/hr (15 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner and new GC leader Sam Watson's Team INEOS Grenadiers:

Sam Watson fired to a powerful sprint win and the overall lead on the fourth stage of the Four Days of Dunkirk, with one stage remaining.

The British rider punched up the final climb to the finish, kicking hard and accelerating to cross the line ahead of Carlos Canal (Movistar), and take the leader’s jersey from third place Lewis Askey (Groupama - FDJ).

With GC leader Axel Zingle (Team Visma - Lease A Bike) abandoning the race with 24km to go, Ben Swift attacked from the peloton at the 19km mark. Swift managed to get away in a group of three, reducing to two as he pushed the pace up the Rue de Tambour.

Despite his efforts, Swift was caught with just 1km remaining, but it was the perfect time for Watson to attack, and he clung on to take the stage win for the team.

Victor Langellotti sprinted to sixth on the stage, and sits eighth on the GC, while Swift’s efforts saw him awarded the Combative award for a second day in a row.

The final flat stage tomorrow will see Watson ride in the white jersey as he sits three seconds ahead of Askey in a battle for the overall win.

Weather at the finish city of Famars at 2:10 PM, local time: 19C (67F), fair, with the wind from the north-northeast at 19 km/hr (12 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from second-place Jake Stewart's Team Israel-Premier Tech.

Jake Stewart equaled his best result of the 2025 season as he sprinted to second place in stage 3 of the 4 Jours de Dunkerque on Friday.

Stewart led the peloton across the line to take second place as the group came agonisingly close to catching breakaway rider Pierre Gautherat (DAT), who launched his race-winning move approaching the flamme rouge.

The British rider, who also finished second in the final stage of February’s Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, looked strong throughout the 154.2-kilometer stage between Valenciennes and Famars, which featured 22.2 kilometers of pavé.

“I’m really happy with the sensations, but it’s a bit frustrating to win the bunch kick when there’s one guy in front,” says the 25-year-old. “But I’m happy with how the legs are, it’s all about building for the Tour, so there’s still some more to come.”

IPT was active throughout the stage, with both German Michael Schwarzmann and home rider Matîs Louvel placing themselves in breakaway groups in the second half of the race.

“It was a pretty hectic day – three-and-a-half hours of racing, first cobbles after six kilometres, so it was a big day of concentration and making sure to race from the front,” adds Stewart.

“The boys did a really good job positioning in the final cobbled sector, as we knew that was going to be pretty important. Riley [Sheehan] followed the key guys on the last kicker with around three kilometers to go to keep his GC hopes alive in case they moved there, then Matîs did a great job moving me up coming off the cobbled sector.

“Unfortunately, that guy just nipped off the front. The boys – PA [Pier-André Côté] and Louvel – committed from behind, but it was too late at the finish. He was just a bit too strong to bring him back.”

Today’s result moves him up four places to eighth overall with two stages remaining. Stewart sits eight seconds off the race lead, but only four seconds off the podium, going into Saturday’s crucial GC stage to Cassel.

Stewart adds: “It’s a really big GC day tomorrow – it has been the stage that has decided the race in previous years. I was third in it in 2022, which put me on the podium on GC, although tomorrow’s parcours is a bit harder. If the legs are good, it should be a stage that I should be able to survive. We can play it by ear with Riley and me, but we’ve got a strong team here to give ourselves the best opportunity for the GC.”

Weather at the finish city of Crépy-en-Valois at 2:25 PM, local time: 17C (60F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the north at 23 km/hr (15 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Oliver Le Gac (Groupama-FDJ) & Rasmus Pedersen (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) did not start. Early on Antoine Hue (CIC-U-Nantes) & Alessandro Romele (XDS Astana) abandoned.

Here's the report from GC leader Axel Zingle's Team Visma | Lease a Bike:

A day after his great victory, Axel Zingle was again competing for the day's victory in 4 Jours de Dunkerque. The rider from Team Visma | Lease a Bike sprinted to fourth place and thus remains the leader in the general classification.

With a similar course to yesterday, Team Visma | Lease a Bike focused once again on Zingle. In his home country, the Frenchman won his first race on behalf of the Dutch team yesterday. On Thursday, he appeared at the start in Avesnes-sur-Helpe in the pink leader's jersey. Thanks to the yellow-black brigade, five attackers remained within reach all day and a sprint seemed inevitable again.

Per Strand Hagenes did some strong work at the front and brought Zingle into a perfect position heading into the finale of the second stage. Lewis Askey surprised the sprinters with an attack just before the final turn. Despite slipping his foot out of his pedal, the Brit held on. The pink leader's jersey will remain on Zingle's shoulders tomorrow, who crossed the finish line in fourth place. Hagenes is just behind him with the fifth place in the general classification.

“After that turn in the last kilometre, it was hard to pass Askey anymore”, Zingle said afterwards. "Maybe I was just a little too cautious. We knew it was going to be hard to win the stage if you weren't among the front three at the last turn. It is what it is. I'm happy that we're still in a good position in the general classification with the team."

The 26-year-old rider could once again count on a strong team today. "In the finale I lost the connection with the peloton somewhat. Per then brought me back to the peloton, even all the way to the front row. That was really very great." Tomorrow the riders will face cobbled sections in northern France. "I think tomorrow's stage suits us well as a team. We are here with a strong squad. I'm looking forward to it.”

Weather at the finish city of Amiens at 2:20 PM, local time: 24C (75F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Julien Vermote (Visma | Lease a Bike) did not start.

Here's the race report from stage winner Axel Zingle's Team Visma | Lease a Bike:

Axel Zingle claimed an impressive victory in the opening stage of the 4 Jours de Dunkerque with a powerful sprint. The Frenchman, who suffered a heavy crash just yesterday in the Classique Dunkerque, proved to be the strongest in the streets of Amiens. His win not only marked Team Visma | Lease a Bike’s 14th victory of the season, but also his first since joining the team.

"I'm not the fastest sprinter at the start, but I know I can position myself well in the final kilometers. Thankfully, everything went perfectly today. I'm incredibly happy with this win, especially after being involved in a crash at the finish yesterday”, a delighted Zingle reflected. His victory also earned him the leader’s jersey in the general classification—a well-deserved reward for a strong team effort.

That team effort was evident from early in the race, with Team Visma | Lease a Bike immediately making its presence known. Without Julien Vermote, who was still suffering from injuries sustained in the Classique Dunkerque, Per Strand Hagenes broke away with five other riders. The traditional early breakaway built a lead of around three minutes, but the peloton remained firmly in control throughout.

That control paid off: with 11 kilometers to go, the breakaway was reeled in, and the sprint teams took over. Zingle positioned himself well in the chaotic final kilometers and stayed near the front. He then capped off the team’s work with an impressive and powerful sprint to take the win.

Thanks to his victory, the 26-year-old Frenchman now leads the general classification—a position he hopes to defend in the days ahead. "We came here as a team aiming for stage wins, and it’s fantastic to already have one in the bag. With both Per and myself well-placed in the GC, it would be great if we could hold onto those positions in the coming days”, Zingle concluded with determination.
