Weather at the town of Brison, on the route, 7 km from the finish, at 2:20 PM, local time: 25C (77F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the north-northwest at 13 km/hr (8 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: There were six non-starters: Callum Thornley (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Stefan Bissegger (Decathlon CMA CGM), Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS Astana), Luke Plapp, Alessandro Covi (Jayco AlUla), and Henri Uhlig (Alpecin-Premier Tech), 100 riders remain in the peloton.

Sadly, Paul Seixas (Decathlon CMA CGM), who crashed in stage seven, abandoned the race after getting dropped on the the Col du Pré. Valenton Ferron (Cofidis) also abandoned.

Here's the organizer's stage eight report:

Paul Seixas (Decathlon CMA CGM) didn’t complete the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes 2026, as the French rising star abandoned on the final day of racing, but youngsters prevailed nonetheless at the Plateau de Solaison. Already a winner on stage 7 at the Grand Colombier, Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) ruled the final ascent and also claimed the yellow and blue leader’s jersey on the final day. He is the first Mexican winner in the 78 editions of the race. At 22 years and 199 days, he is also the third youngest winner in the history of the event, behind Greg LeMond (21 years and 345 days in 1983) and Louis Rostollan (22 years and 158 days in 1958), but just ahead of Bernard Hinault (22 years and 204 days in 1977). His closest chasers also illustrate the rise of young stars, as 21-year-old Luke Tuckwell (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) managed to hang on to second place of the overall standings. Second on the day, 23-year-old Juan Ayuso (Lidl-Trek) completes the podium.

A breakaway of climbers
Following the withdrawals of Callum Thornley (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Stefan Bisseger (Decathlon CMA CGM), Luke Plapp, Alessandro Covi (Jayco AlUla), Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS Astana) and Henri Uhlig (Alpecin-Premier Tech), there are 100 riders remaining in the peloton at the start in Beaufort.

Stage eight gets started.

The route quickly takes the riders up the Col du Pré. It is on these slopes that, from kilometre 5, an attacking group begins to form, reaching the summit with eight riders: Laurens De Plus, Carlos Rodriguez (Netcompany Ineos), Léo Bisiaux (Decathlon CMA CGM), Georg Steinhauser (EF Education-Easypost), Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal Quick-Step), Harold Tejada (XDS Astana), Geoffrey Bouchard (TotalEnergies) and Clément Braz Afonso (Groupama-FDJ United), who seizes the opportunity to defend his polka-dot jersey.

The peloton, led by Lidl-Trek, is currently 1’30’’ behind, whilst Kévin Vauquelin (Netcompany Ineos), embarked in a solo chase, is 55’’ behind. He rejoins the group at km 24, whilst Bouchard has been dropped by the breakaway.

Paul Seixas withdraws
The breakaway’s lead grows to 1’45’’ (km 26), but on the climb up Bisanne, UAE Team Emirates-XRG take over from Lidl-Trek to control the gap.

Meanwhile, Paul Seixas decides to abandon the race, hampered by pain following his heavy crash the previous day.

Braz Afonso all but secures the polka-dot jersey as he goes first at the summit, and the peloton’s pace allowed the gap to widen to 2’40’’. The situation proves far less favourable for the breakaway as they reach the Col des Aravis (km 73.4), with a lead of just 40 seconds. The long descent to Saint-Pierre-en-Faucigny (km 101.8) gives them some respite, but the situation remains under the tight control of Juan Ayuso’s teammates.

Del Toro flies away, Tuckwell hangs on to the podium
The attackers start the final ascent to Plateau de Solaison (11.3 km at 9.1%) with a lead of 45 seconds. Valentin Paret-Peintre ups the ante. Carlos Rodriguez follows his move. But they can’t resist when Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) attacks 9 kilometres from the summit.

The Mexican climber covers the last 8 kilometres alone and flies to the stage win and the yellow and blue leader’s jersey. Behind him, Ben Tulett (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) set a pace Luke Tuckwell (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) can’t follow.

The group explodes when Juan Ayuso (Lidl-Trek) attacks with just over 5 kilometres to go. Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) tries to react but he crumbles in the final two kilometres. Tobias Johannessen (Uno-X Mobility) finishes third on the day (+1’02’’), right behind Ayuso (+1’02’’).

With the key support of Maxim Van Gils, Tuckwell crosses the line with a gap of 1’43’’. Enough to finish second overall, 54 seconds behind Del Toro and 23 seconds ahead of Ayuso.

Weather at Arvière-en-Valromey, on the route, about 12 kilometers from the summit of the Grand Colombier, at 2:50 PM, local time: 26C (79F), fair, with the wind from the north at 10 km/hr (6 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Because of stage six crashes and a wave of illness hitting the teams, 13 riders did not start:
In addition to Oscar Onley (Netcompany Ineos), Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), Per Hagenes, Jorgen Nordhagen (Visma-Lease a Bike), Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost), Pepijn Reinderink (Soudal Quick-Step), Nicola Conci (XDS Astana), Marco Frigo (NSN), Emanuel Buchmann, Louis Rouland (Cofidis), Gijs Leemreize, Dillon Corkery, and Alexy Faure Prost (Picnic PostNL) .

Early in the stage Gal Glivar (Alpecin-Premier Tech) abandoned after crashing. Midway into the stage Pablo Castrillo (Movistar) also abandoned.

The gravel-road descent of the third climb, the Côte de Saint-Maurice-de-Rotheren, was neutralized for safety reasons.

Here's the race organizer's stage seven report:

Stage 7 of the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes 2026 was highly anticipated, but nobody could have predicted the breathtaking scenario witnessed from La Bridoire to a brutal summit finish up the Grand Colombier (133.6 km). Attackers gave their all on the first ascents of the day, but the race dynamics were mostly affected by the crash suffered by Paul Seixas (Decathlon CMA CGM) on a downhill section, 32 kilometres after the start. The French youngster battled the pain to make his way back to the bunch after around 65 kilometres of chasing. But he couldn’t keep up with the best on the final ascent of the day, leaving the front positions to a couple of other wonderkids.

Selfie taken on the startline.

Juan Ayuso (Lidl-Trek) attacked early on the climb, before Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) caught up to him inside the last 2 kilometres and eventually dropped him to take victory. Paul Seixas lost 1’21’’, while Luke Tuckwell (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) dropped 2’33’’. The young Aussie retains the yellow and blue leader’s jersey with a gap of 42 seconds over Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike), and 49 seconds over Del Toro.

Braz Afonso on the hunt
There were 114 riders left at the start in La Bridoire . Shortly after the start, a trio of French climbers break away with Kévin Vauquelin (Netcompany Ineos), Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal Quick-Step) and Clément Braz Afonso (Groupama-FDJ), but were reeled back in by the peloton just after crossing the Col du Banchet (km 5.1). The polka-dot jersey holder pushes hard on the Col de la Crusille and consolidates his lead in the mountains classification, but that’s not enough to make the breakaway.

Seixas on the ground
The race is temporarily neutralised to allow the riders to descend at a moderate speed down a stretch made dangerous by loose gravel following the Côte de Saint-Maurice-de-Rotherens.

Shortly after the race restarts at km 30, Paul Seixas falls into a ditch. Accompanied by Bisseger and Hoole, the Frenchman is 4 minutes behind the peloton at km 50.

Meanwhile, the battle for the break goes on. At km 51, Sean Quinn (EF Education-EasyPost) and Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) launch a new move. Several riders join them in the ascent of Lacets du Grand Colombier, with Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies), Bennett (NSN), Berthet (Groupama-FDJ United), Simmons (Lidl-Trek), De Plus, Rodriguez (Netcompany Ineos), V. Paret-Peintre (Soudal Quick-Step), Jegat (TotalEnergies) and Samitier (Cofidis).

Seixas returns
On the descent towards Anglefort (km 83.1), the leading group is reduced to five riders: De Plus, Rodriguez, Berthet, Bennett and V. Paret-Peintre. They reach the intermediate sprint at Chanay (km 95.6) with a 45-second lead over the yellow jersey peloton.

Now helped by Aurélien Paret-Peintre and Nicolas Prodhomme, Paul Seixas is 30 seconds behind alongside his teammates as well as, notably, Vauquelin and Maxim Van Gils (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe). With the decisive help of Léo Bisiaux over a few kilometres, they eventually catch up with the main field 36 km from the finish.

UAE Team Emirates-XRG, Lidl-Trek and Visma-Lease a Bike keep working together at the front of the bunch. The attackers are caught with 12 kilometres to go, just before the brutal ascent of Grand Colombier from Virieu-le-Petit (8.4 km at 10.2%).

Ayuso tries, Del Toro flies
Juan Ayuso attacks early on the climb, with 7 kilometres remaining. Ben Tulett and Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) try to control the Spaniard’s move while Paul Seixas and Luke Tuckwell (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) struggle to keep up.

Juan Ayuso attacks on the the Grand Colombier with Ben Tulett the only rider able to bridge up to him. Tulett was soon dropped by Ayuso.

As the gap to Ayuso increases to 20 seconds, Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) counter-attacks with 4 kilometres to go. He gets back to the front rider a couple of kilometres later and rapidly drops him to take off to victory.

Bam! Isaac del Toro attacks, goes right on by Juan Ayuso and wins the stage.

On the line, Ayuso loses 24 seconds. Tobias Johannessen (Uno-X Mobility) completes the stage top-3 (+38’’) ahead of Matteo Jorgenson (+41’’). Paul Seixas trails by 1’21’’, and Luke Tuckwell by 2’33’’. The young Australian climber retains the yellow and blue leader’s jersey with a gap of 42 seconds over Matteo Jorgenson.

Isaac Del Toro wins stage seven.

The race: Wout van Aert did not start. His Visma | Lease a Bike team posted this note: Wout van Aert will not appear at the start of stage 6 of Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes today. He is still experiencing significant discomfort in his elbow related to the crash he sustained last week. Wout will travel back to Belgium for further medical examinations. Join us in wishing Wout a smooth recovery.

Other riders not starting: Hannes Wilksch (Tudor Pro Cycling Team), Michael Matthews (Jayco AlUla), Pau Marti (NSN Cycling Team) & Matevz Govekar (Bahrain Victorious).

Kevin Geniets (Groupama-FDJ United) & Josh Tarling (Netcompany INEOS) abandoned midway into the stage after crashing.

Here's the race organizer's stage six summary:

The final three mountainous stages of the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes 2026 started with a new climbing challenge to Crest-Voland that crowned early attackers, in line with Georg Zimmermann’s success in the same resort three years ago and with the many wins already claimed by breakaway riders this week. This time, no less than sixty riders broke away from the peloton in the early stages of a 182.3 km day of intense action! Luke Tuckwell was the main GC threat at the front as he only trailed by 1’03’’ in the overall standings. Indeed, the young Australian climber claimed the yellow and blue leader’s jersey on the line, finishing third in the stage… But not only did the rookie make a name for himself at the top level of professional cycling, he also played a key role in leading his Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe teammate Maxim Van Gils to victory ahead of Tobias Johannessen (Uno-X Mobility)! Three minutes behind them, Paul Seixas (Decathlon CMA CGM) and Isaac Del Toro (UAE Emirates-XRG) gained a handful of seconds on their rivals, starting with Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike), who dropped 13 seconds.

A breakaway bunch!
There are 135 riders left in the peloton as they set off from Saint-Vulbas following the withdrawals of Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike), Finn Fisher-Black (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Hannes Wilksch (Tudor), Matevz Govekar (Bahrain Victorious), Pau Marti (NSN) and Michael Matthews (Jayco-AlUla).

The route encourages the attackers to make their move, and they are throwing themselves into it in large numbers. A veritable leading peloton breaks away at km 6 with 60 riders. Among them, the highest-ranked in the general classification are Luke Tuckwell (1’03’’ behind leader Alex Baudin), Bruno Armirail (1’20’’) and Guillaume Martin Guyonnet (1’51’’).

Most of the favourites are in the main peloton, which is already 1’20’’ behind at the 14 km mark, and where Paul Seixas’s Decathlon CMA CGM team are left to lead the chase. Two of his teammates who had taken up positions at the front are asked to come back to provide support, but the gap still widens to 1’50’’… after barely thirty kilometres of racing.

Tarling crashes and withdraws
As the leaders approach the Côte de Châtelard, the gap to the second group has widened further to 2’30’’. Clément Braz Afonso, who has been wise enough to follow the day’s breakaway, claims two KOM points at the summit (km 83.5).

The polka-dot jersey also leads the way at the Col du Granier (km 98.3), where he takes 5 points. At the summit, the leaders have lost Joshua Tarling (Netcompany Ineos), forced to abandon after a crash, but their lead is up to 2’55’’.

As they receive no support, Decathlon CMA CGM stop their effort. The gap rapidly increases, forcing Alex Baudin’s EF Education-EasyPost and Netcompany Ineos to react en route to the two cat-1 ascents to be tackled in quick succession t wrap up the stage.

The attackers are set to battle it out
At the bottom of the Côte d’Héry-sur-Ugine, the gap is up to 5 minutes. Attackers know they will battle for the stage win, and potentially the yellow and blue jersey as well. Some of them try to anticipate the final explosion but everything is decided on the ascent to Crest-Voland, taking on a different side (5.9 km at 7.7%) compared to the 2023 finale.

Georg Steinhauser (EF Education-EasyPost) attacks at the bottom of the climb but he’s rapidly caught and distanced by Maxim Van Gils (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and Tobias Johannessen (Uno-XMobility). Pablo Torres (UAE Emirates-XRG) joins them at the front, and then it’s Luke Tuckwell (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) who bridges the gap and starts setting the pace at the front.

Full on battle on the final climb
Torres is dropped just before the final kilometre. Johannessen opens up the sprint but Van Gils passes him and takes victory four months after a very serious crash in the Clasic Jaen. Only three seconds behind them, Tuckwell is set to take the yellow and blue leader’s jersey.

In the GC group, Decathlon CMA CGM up the ante at the bottom of the final climb. Alex Baudin is immediately distanced. And Paul Seixas starts setting his own pace with 5 kilometres to go. Only four riders follow the French youngster: Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike), Juan Ayuso, and Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek). The latter two are rapidly distanced.

Maxim Van Gils beats Tobias Halland Johannessen for the stage win.

Jorgensen is dropped into the last three kilometres. Seixas and Del Toro collaborate to gain 13 seconds on the American, and 22 on the Lidl-Trek duo. Kévin Vauquelin (Netcompany Ineos) loses a minute and a half. But it’s a much darker situation for his teammate Oscar Onley, who suffered a crash in the finale and drops almost half an hour.

  • Km 7.5: Col de la Gachet, 1.7 km @ 4.4%. Cat. 4

Weather at the finish city of Villars-les-Dombes at 2:40 PM, local time: 21C (70F), fair, with the wind from the north-northwest at 14 km/hr (9 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Not starting: Jefferson Cepeda (Movistar), Ivan Romero (Movistar), & Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious). “Unfortunately, a bout of flu affecting the team has meant that Ivan Romeo and Jefferson Cepeda will not be starting on Thursday”, Movistar published on social media, while Bahrain Victorious say “Matej Mohoric was feeling unwell overnight and, following medical advice, will not start Stage 5”.

Stage five gets started.

Here's the race organizer's stage five summary:

Narrowly edged by the breakaway on day 4, Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) made the most of the opportunity handed out to the sprinters at the Parc des Oiseaux in Villars-les-Dombes. In his return to the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, four years after his last participation, the Belgian star unleashed his power to claim a sixth victory in the race. He has now won at least one stage in each of his participations in the event: two in 2019, one in 2020, two in 2022, and another in this 78th edition.

This time, he got the better of Hugo Hofstetter (NSN) and Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious) to take his second victory on the road this season, a couple of months after winning Paris-Roubaix Hauts-de-France. Alex Baudin (EF Education-EasyPost) finished inside the bunch to retain the yellow and blue leader’s jersey ahead of three mountainous stages set to decide the overall winner of the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

The race:
Finally a day for the sprinters? Attackers have ruled supreme over the first few stages, including yesterday in Montrond-les-Bains, where Quinn Simmons and his breakaway companions narrowly resisted the bunch. Stage 5 presents some climbing again, especially at the start from Saint-Chamond, but the run-in to Parc des Oiseaux Villars-les-Dombes is flat. The question is whether sprint teams can control the stage over 195.8 kilometres.

Six riders in the breakaway
Following the withdrawals of Jefferson Cepeda, Ivan Romeo (Movistar) and Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious), 141 riders are at the start in Saint-Chamond. They face the Côte de la Croix-Blanche straight away, and it is almost within sight of the summit that a group of six riders breaks away, comprising Pepijn Reinderink (Soudal Quick-Step), Thibault Guernalec (TotalEnergies), Julen Arriola-Bengoa (Caja Rural), Felix Engelhardt (Jayco AlUla), Hugo Houle (Alpecin-Premier Tech) and Robbe Dhondt (Picnic PostNL).

Six riders off the front. With 109 km to go they have a 2min 14sec gap on the peloton. They are: Pepijn Reinderink (Soudal Quick-Step), Thibault Guernalec (Total Energies), Julen Arriola-Bengoa (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Felix Engelhardt (Jayco AlUla), Hugo Houle (Alpecin-Premier Tech), Robbe Dhondt (Picnic PostNL). Photo: Gaetan Flamme

This group soon realise that the peloton will grant them only a narrow margin, as the Cofidis and Visma-Lease a Bike teams spring into action as soon as the clock shows 2’40”, at the 11 km mark.

Their move is furthermore threatened by a series of counter-attacks that temporarily bring the peloton within 20 seconds. The scare is short-lived, however, and the breakaway riders eventually regain ground to reach a maximum lead of 2’45’’ at km 57.

Van Aert delivers
The peloton is wary of headwinds. And sprinters don’t want to miss out on their only opportunities to win before the mountainous final three stages. Bahrain Victorious and Tudor also participate in the chase.

The gap gradually decreases: around two minutes as Julen Arriola-Bengoa goes first at the intermediate sprint (km 108.7); a minute and a half into the last 70 kilometres; under a minute with just over 40 kilometres remaining…

Hugo Houle is distanced by his breakaway companions 17 kilometres away from the line. The rest of the attackers are eventually caught with 5 kilometres to go.

Visma-Lease a Bike lead the charge into the last kilometre with an impressive Edoardo Affini. And Wout van Aert delivers the stage win with a dominant sprint to resist Hugo Hofstetter (NSN) and Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious) to the end.

Wout van Aert wins stage five.

Weather at the finish city of Montrond-les-Bains at 2:30 PM, local time: 18C (65F), showers in the vicinity, with the wind from the north at 18 km/hr (11 mph). The rain is forecast to end around 3:45 PM.

The race: Ivo Oliveira (UAE Team Emriates-XRG) did not start. Midway into the stage Haimar Etxeberria (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) abandoned.

Here's the race organizer's stage four report:

Breakaway riders rule the early stages of the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes! After Alex Baudin in Saint-Ismier and Anthon Charmig in Le Puy-en-Velay, Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) powered to victory in a thrilling stage 4 from Le Puy-en-Velay to Montrond-les-Bains (167.4 km). The only success that escaped attackers was in the team time trial, with Matteo Jorgenson and Visma-Lease a Bike ruling in Perreux yesterday.

This time, baroudeurs united to escape the peloton after a hard battle and resist the sprinters in a very tight finale. The gap never went over 2 minutes. But that was enough for the US national champion and nine companions to make it to the line. Simmons proved to be the fastest on the line, claiming victory ahead of Finn Fisher-Black (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and Matteo Vercher (Total Energies). Only four seconds behind, Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) dominated the sprint from the bunch.

The stage:
Another day for the attackers? Or can some teams control the first two thirds of stage 4 and battle it out in Montrond-les-Bains? The road rises early and most of today’s elevation gain (2,250 metres) is packed in the middle section of the course with a sequence of five categorised climbs to be faced in quick succession. A 145-man peloton tackle these challenges as Ivo Oliveira doesn’t start. UAE Team Emirates-XRG report their Portuguese rider “was feeling unwell overnight”.

Stage four gets its official start.

77 kilometres to make the break
The terrain inspires attackers, who battle through headwinds to try and make the break of the day. The early ascent to Col de la Croix de l’Arbre (km 14.6) isn’t enough to get away, despite many ascents. Marco Frigo (NSN) goes first at the summit. And he’s rapidly reeled in afterwards. Attacks keep flying but the pack is bunched as Nadav Raisberg (NSN) wins the intermediate sprint in Arlanc (km 52.6), in line with his performance on days 1 and 2.

The decisive move is launched after 60 kilometres of battle as Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek), Andreas Kron (Uno-X Mobility) and Jordan Jegat (TotalEnergies) set off on the on the Côte du Temple.

Counter-attackers break away from the peloton in several waves and catch up to the lead trio just before the summit of the Côte de Chougoirand (km 77.9), making it a 12-man group with Finn Fisher-Black (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Pablo Castrillo, Raul Garcia Pierna (Movistar), Matteo Vercher (TotalEnergies), Jan Castellon (Caja Rural), George Bennett, Marco Frigo (NSN), Lars Craps (Lotto Intermarché) and Samuel Watson (Nertcompany Ineos).

Not much of a margin for the attackers
A maximum gap of two minutes is recorded before the climb up the Col des Limites (km 92.4). Jan Castellon gets in contention for the polka-dot jersey as he collects KOM points at Côte de Chougoirand, Col des Limites, as well as Côte de Lérigneux (km 104.7), and Côte de Roche-en-Forez (km 109.6)

However, the chase led by EF Education-EasyPost, supported by Cofidis and Visma-Lease a Bike, keeps the breakaway riders at a reasonable distance. With 30 kilometres to go, the leading group loses Samuel Watson to a crash, then George Bennett. Their lead over the peloton is already down to 55 seconds…

The gap even drops to 15 seconds with 10 kilometres to go. But now, the wind pushes the attackers towards Montrond-les-Bains. They are still 15 seconds ahead as they enter the last 3 kilometres. Pablo Castrillo ups the ante. It’s not enough to drop his rivals. But it ensures the breakaway will sprint for victory.

Quinn Simmons wins stage four.

Simmons proves to be the strongest to narrowly claim victory ahead of Finn Fisher-Black and Matteo Vercher. Only four seconds behind, Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) dominates the sprint in the bunch.

Team Visma | Lease a Bike on its way to winning the stage.

Why Your Bike is Made in Asia

Bill McGann’s book Why Your Bike Is Made in Asia: My career in bicycles as I watched two continents squander an industry is available in print, Kindle eBook & Audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start/finish city of Perreux at 2:40 PM, local time: 21C (69F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the north at 13 km/hr (8 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Team Picnic-PostNL was scheduled to be the first team off at 3:05 PM.

Diego Pescador (Movistar) will not start. The Colombian ss affected by a flu-like condition and, after a bad night's sleep, has been forced to abandon the race.

Here's the race organizer's stage three report:

The team time trial set in Perreux on day 3 of the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes 2026 delivered the twists and thrills anticipated with the special format that will also serve as the opener of the Tour de France next month in Barcelona. Netcompany Ineos led the way at the intermediate checkpoints but Visma-Lease a Bike surged to victory after 28.4 kilometres of intense tactical racing. The Dutch team propelled Matteo Jorgenson for the uphill finale, the American leader eventually posting a time of 32:52 to take victory with a margin of nine seconds over their British rivals. EF Education-EasyPost round out the podium with Alex Baudin successfully defending his yellow and blue leader’s jersey after losing 29 seconds.

The stage:
After a mountain stage to kick off the race on Sunday and a hilly marathon on stage 3, the riders face another challenge on stage 3 of the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes: a 28.4 km team time trial around Perreux, with several ups and downs. The stage uses a format tried and tested on the roads of Paris-Nice, which will also serve as an opener to the Tour de France 2026, in Barcelona.

The stage standings are established with the time of each team’s best rider. For the general classification, riders who finish with the first rider from their team will be credited with the same times. Others will have their own time.

Jayco AlUla make a strong impression
The battle begins with Picnic PostNL, who set an early pace that is quickly overtaken by Lotto Intermarché, and then by NSN.

Whilst the first three teams in contention are not the most high-profile for this discipline, Jayco AlUla go into the race as specialists – a reputation they live up to. On the final climb, Michael Matthews finish the job to enable his team to be the first to break the 50 km/h barrier (50.45 km/h), whilst his leader Luke Plapp capitalise on the collective effort to preserve his chances of shining in the general classification.

Lidl-Trek raise the bar
The time set by the Australians withstands the challenge from Santiago Buitrago’s Bahrain Victorious, who finish 11 seconds behind, as well as that of UAE Emirates-XRG, whose leader Isaac Del Toro drops 7 seconds.

UAE Team Emirates-XRG starts.

Movistar manage to beat Jayco AlUla’s benchmark with a strong performance capped off by Cian Uitjtdebroeks. But the Belgian’s 33’44’’ effort is broken by the riders from Lidl-Trek, who raise the bar even higher with Mattias Skjelmose and Juan Ayuso reaching the finish with and average speed of exactly 51 km/h (33:24).

Jorgenson attacks, Baudin defends
The two main favourites ahead of the stage, Netcompany Ineos and Visma-Lease a Bike, start in quick succession. The British squad lead the way at the intermediate checkpoints (3’’ on their Dutch rivals after 8 km, 6’’ at km 15.8) but Oscar Onley struggles with his chainring, forcing the team to momentarily decrease the pace. They nonetheless beat Lidl-Trek by 23 seconds… But Matteo Jorgenson posts a time of 33:52 (9 seconds faster) for Visma-Lease a Bike!

Stage winning team: Visma | Lease a Bike. Sirotti photo

In their wake, EF Education-EasyPost impress with their effort on the day after they successfully defended Alex Baudin’s yellow and blue leader’s jersey over more than 230 kilometres. The Frenchman crosses the line with a loss of 29 seconds (3rd best time) and thus retains the overall lead with a margin of 12 seconds on Kévin Vauquelin and Onley.

Weather at the finish town of Le Puy-en-Velay at 2:35 PM, local time: 23C (75F), rain, with the wind from the west at 10 km/hr (6 mph). The rain is forecast to end about 3:30 PM.

The race: In the stage's earlier kilometers Gorka Sorarrain (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) abandoned and midway into the stage Roel Van Sintmaartensdijk (Lotto-Intermarché) also quit the race.

Here's the race organizer's stage two summary:

After Alex Baudin (EF Education-EasyPost) in Saint-Ismier, day 2 of the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes 2026 also favoured a solo attacker. This time, Anthon Charmig (Uno-X Mobility) proved to be the strongest rider from the breakaway after a long and demanding stage from Saint-Martin-le-Vinoux (234.3 km, 3,685 m of elevation). Part of a 10-man group, the Danish puncheur distanced Clément Braz Afonso (Groupama-FDJ United) and Raul Garcia Pierna (Movistar) just before the final summit of the day and covered the last 12 kilometres on his own to take his second professional victory. Around three minutes behind, Baudin finished with the reduced bunch to retain the yellow and blue leader’s jersey on the eve of the team time trial in Le Perreux.

The stage:
After a demanding opening stage of the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes 2026, day 2 of the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is long and packed with climbing: 3,685 metres of elevation to overcome before reaching Le Puy-en-Velay after 234.3 km of racing from Saint-Martin-le-Vinoux. That makes for the longest stage in the event since 2003.

A 10-man breakaway
The 149 riders who reached Saint-ismier on Sunday are also at the start of stage 2. Many of them are interested in making the breakaway, a situation that leads to a fierce battle from the start.

Anthon Charmig (Uno X-Mobility), Baptiste Veistroffer (Intermarché-Lotto), Alex Diaz (Caja Rural), Nadav Raisberg (NSN), Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis) et Henri-François Renard-Haquin (Picnic PostNL) set off at kilometre 0.

Behind them, the likes of Matteo Trentin (Tudor) and Michael Matthews (Jayco AlUla) participate in counter-attacks, without meeting success. But counter-attackers don’t surrender and initiate new moves on the climb to Col de Chatain (km 22.8).

Jordan Jegat (TotalEnergies) accelerates and, together with Raul Garcia Pierna (Movistar), Vlad Van Mechelen (Bahrain Victorious), and then Clément Braz Afonso (Groupama-FDJ United), the French climber bridges the gap to the front group at km 33, just before the Col de la Croix de Toutes Aures (km 35.3).

At the summit, the peloton trail by 5’50’’, with EF Education-Easypost setting the pace. Braz Afonso is the main threat for the yellow and blue jersey as he trails by 5’35’’ in GC.

EF Education-EasyPost react
The gap hits a maximum of 6’20’’ at km 77, as the peloton rider through the Rhône Valley, towards Ardèche and the third climb of the day: the cat-2 Col Robert Marchand (10.9 km at 4.4%).

Benjamin Thomas goes first at the summit, just like he did in the first two climbs of the day. His tally is up to 12 KOM points, against Baudin’s 14.

The attackers then pass the intermediate sprint with a lead of 6’15’’ to the bunch. EF Education-EasyPost take the most of the transition to the final climbs of the day to accelerate and bring the gap down to 4’35’’.

Braz Afonso tries, Charmig wins
The cooperation within the breakaway is broken up 47 kilometres from the finish by Baptiste Veistroffer and Clément Braz Afonso, who try their luck as a duo ahead of the Côte des Baraques.

The Groupama-FDJ United climber goes solo to secure the polka dot jersey, but some chasers get back to him in successive waves: Garcia Pierna and Van Mechelen to begin with, and then Charmig, Jegat, Thomas and Renard-Haquin into the last 20 kilometres.

The peloton trail by 4 minutes at the bottom of the final climb, Côte de Saint-Vidal (cat. 3), to be summited with 11.8 km to go. Charmig proves to be the strongest on the ascent. At the summit, Braz Afonso and Garcia Pierna trail by 5 seconds. But the Dane pushes his advantage in the final run-in to Le Puy-en-Velay.

Anthon Charmig wins stage two.

He eventually takes victory with a margin of 40 seconds to his chaser, with Renard-Haquin and Van Mechelen coming back from behind to round out the podium. The peloton finish with a gap of 3’13’’; Alex Baudin retains the yellow and blue leader’s jersey.

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage one report:

A most demanding stage 1 of the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes 2026 saw Alex Baudin (EF Education-EasyPost) complete a spectacular breakaway to dominate the many ups and downs of the day and celebrate victory in Saint-Ismier. The French attacker made the breakaway after an intense battle starting from Vizille. He then distanced all his companions on the final ascent of the day, the cat 1 Côte de Rousset, and resisted the favourites as he covered the last 28 kilometres alone, eventually claiming all prizes on offer (the stage, the combativity award, and all distinctive jerseys).

Among the GC contenders, Oscar Onley and Kévin Vauquelin (Netcompany Ineos) gained 12 seconds on the likes of Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), Paul Seixas (Decathlon CMA CGM) and Juan Ayuso (Lidl-Trek), who finished together.

The stage:
The 78th edition of the race, the first under the name Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, kicks off with a demanding 146.2 km stage from Vizille to Saint-Ismier. The top contenders for the overall standings are called into action early with many ups and downs - 3,160 metres of elevation - culminating with the cat.-1 ascent of Côte de Rousset (8.2 km at 7.6%) to be summited 20 kilometres from the finish.

A fierce battle for the break
A group of eight riders initially forms with Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis) at the helm, but they are reeled in by the peloton at the 16 km mark. A new series of attacks, from km 19, leads to the break of the day with Alastair Mackellar (EF Education-EasyPost), Matteo Vercher (Total Energies), Clément Braz Afonso (Groupama-FDJ United), initially joined by Pepijn Reinderink (Soudal-Quick Step), Georg Zimmermann (Lotto Intermarché), Alex Diaz (Caja Rural) and Nadav Raisberg (NSN), then by Alex Baudin (EF Education-EasyPost), Raul Garcia Pierna (Movistar) and Sergio Samitier (Cofidis).

On the climb up the Col de l’Arzelier, Reinderink and Raisberg are dropped, but George Bennett (NSN) bridges the gap to make it nine riders in the lead.

Behind the attackers, Paul Seixas’ Decathlon CMA CGM drive the bunch. The French team rapidly loses Matthew Riccitello, who fell sick overnight, but they still have the collective strength to control the gap around 2 minutes.

Baudin takes flight, Netcompany Ineos gain time
The attackers up the ante again on the ascent of Côte de Quaix-en-Chartreuse (2.3 km at 9.2%). Samitier gives his all to take the points at the summit (km 94.4) but he’s quickly passed and distanced by a new lead trio made of Baudin, Bennett and Braz Afonso. They summit Col de Vence (km 102.2) together and enter the last 30 kilometres with a gap of 1’20’’.

Onto the final ascent of the day, Baudin rapidly drops his breakaway rivals. Many riders are dropped from the bunch, due to the pace set by Decathlon CMA CGM and Visma-Lease a Bike. Towards the summit, Kevin Vermaerke (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) sets off in pursuit. Behind him, the likes of Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal Quick-Step), Luke Tuckwell (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) also accelerate. So does Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) after the summit. But all these moves are covered.

Kevin Vauquelin eventually finds an opening with 6 kilometres to go. His Netcompany Ineos teammate Oscar Onley joins the move, along with eight more attackers. Ramses Debruyne (Alpecin-Premier Tech) finishes second, 32 seconds behind Baudin. Onley and Vauquelin, as well as Luke Plapp (Jayco AlUla), gain 12 seconds on the rest of the GC contenders.
