Here's the report from second-place Mauro Schmid's Team Jayco-AlUla:
Mauro Schmid added yet another podium performance to his palmarès this week with a hard-fought second place finish at the NXT Classic.
The Swiss champion went clear with Tibor Del Grosso with around 30 kilometres to go as the peloton began to split under the pressure of a high pace, following an earlier attack by his Team Jayco AlUla teammate Davide de Pretto.
While the gap between the duo and the chasers was never that big, topping out at a little over 30 seconds, they worked well together to keep the pack at bay. Anders Foldager added to the performance with fourth place from the sprint in the chasing group just seven seconds behind.
The result continues a great run of form for Schmid, who racked up a stage win, overall victory and three second-place finishes at Coppi e Bartali last week.
Mauro Schmid:
“I felt quite good before the race, and it was a good opportunity to test myself before the Ardennes Classics. Maybe the course was not exactly hard enough for me to make the difference before, especially with the last 30km being mostly downhill. We also had to do quite a lot to make sure that we stayed away. Then, I did a bit of a mistake in the last corner, taking it in the front and then I had a bit of a gap after the corner and I couldn’t quite get back in the wheel, but overall, I’m quite happy.”
