TDF volume 1

The Race: An early break of 17 riders rode most of the race off the front. The escapees enjoyed about 150 kilometers of freedom before being rounded up on one of the race's late climbs, the Soragno.

On the final ascent, the Ruviglia, eight riders, including Linus Gerdemann and Sebastien Reichenbach, got a gap, but they were soon brought back to the field.

That left things for a small group sprint. Przemyslaw Niemiec gave his Lampre teammate Niccolo Bonifazio a leadout, which the Italian did not waste. Bonifazio won the sprint in a commanding fashion.

This was the seventh career win for Bonifazio and the fifth one of the season for Lampre-Merida
