The Race:
Here's the report from second-place Aleksandr Vlasov's Bora-hansgrohe team.
Before the start of the Itzulia Basque Country on Monday, the riders had an opportunity to test the legs at the tough one-day race in the Navarre region of Spain. Due to snowfall, the course around Estella had to be altered, with the removal of the toughest climbs and shortening of the race distance to 191 km.
On the last lap Aleks Vlasov launched an attack and eventually became part of a six-man group that managed to gain a small advantage over the reduced peloton. However, they were ultimately caught a few kilometres from the finish and the race was decided in a sprint from a smaller group, with Aleks finishing second, a result that bodes well for the upcoming Tour of the Basque Country.
"We didn't have the best weather conditions today and it was quite a stressful race. It was cold with some snow and rain, which made the race difficult. However, the team did a good job of supporting me and keeping me safe on the last lap. I tried to do something in the last lap before the steep climb and hoped for a small breakaway group, because from a not so big group I have better chances in a sprint. I was very close to winning, which shows that my form is good before the Tour of the Basque Country. So overall we can be satisfied with today's race." - Aleksandr Vlasov
"There is rarely a bike race over five hours with an average of three or four degrees. So, it was very, very challenging. I think it was the right decision from the race organiser to modify the race, so that it did not traverse through the higher mountains. Our strategy was to make the race easier for Aleks and to generally take care of him today. The guys did a great job with that, keeping him out of the wind and riding well together, and then Aleks tried to go on the offensive 20 kilometres from the finish. At first he got away in a duo, but then the group grew to six riders. They always had a little more than a 10 second advantage. Normally, when you're caught at the bottom of the last climb, the morale sinks, but that wasn't the case for Aleks. He went all the way and was really one of the strongest in the finale. It's a pity that in the end it was "only" second place. But chapeau for his performance and also to the team, who was always ready to pave the way for him." - Jens Zemke, Sports Director
