The race: Here's the report from second-place Christian Scaroni's XDS Astana Team.
XDS Astana Team rider Christian Scaroni finished second in the Italian one-day race GP Industria & Artigianato, held today in the town of Larciano in Tuscany.
The decisive moments of the race came on the final climb of the day, Mungherino. British rider Tom Pidcock attacked from the peloton, followed by Christian Scaroni and several other riders. The chasers were unable to catch Pidcock on the descent, and he went on to take the victory. Christian Scaroni launched a counterattack from the chasing group with one kilometer to go and finished the race in second place. It was Scaroni’s second podium in this race, after also finishing second last year.
“I think I did the maximum possible today. When you finish behind a rider like Pidcock, it shows that you are in good shape. Tom was the strongest today, congratulations to him. Our team rode an amazing race, and I want to thank the guys for their help. The final climb was new to the route and, of course, it made the race even more selective. Pidcock attacked on the steepest section. I couldn’t respond immediately, but I tried to follow his attack at my own pace. It was very hot today, and I can’t say I like this kind of weather. Nevertheless, I did everything I could. On the descent, we got closer to the leader, but we weren’t able to fully organise the chase. I knew the finish and understood that it would be better to try to avoid a sprint, so I attacked in the final kilometer and managed to finish second again. Of course, I would have really liked to win, but today I can be happy with the podium. There are still a few more races ahead, so we’ll see how things go,” said Christian Scaroni.
