Weather at the finish city of Vicenza at 2:15 PM, local time: 19C (66F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 6 km/hr (4 mph). There is just a 2% chance of rain.

The stage: Completely flat in the first half, apart from the short climb of Passo Roverello in the Euganean Hills. At 60 km to go, the race enters the Berici Hills for a series of rolling climbs, including San Giovanni in Monte. After a first passage through the finish line, riders complete a 20 km circuit featuring the climb to Arcugnano (via Pilla), before the finale at the Sanctuary of Monte Berico. Roads are mostly straight but vary in width and are punctuated by towns with the usual urban road furniture.

Final kilometers: The last 3 km are flat until 1,200 m to go, where the final climb begins. The last kilometer averages 7.1%, with the final ramps reaching 10–12%. The finish line is 300 meters away on 7-metre-wide asphalt.

The race: Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Mads Pedersen said: “What an incredible Giro this is! Timing my effort was dictated by instinct. I had to open up on the right side close to the barriers. So I went a bit earlier than I wanted to. On such a hard day and a final like this, everyone has burning legs in the finale. It was definitely nice to have seen it before. We first tried to win the stage with Mathias Vacek. He deserves to get his chance too. If there was a hesitation in the peloton, Romain Bardet and he would have had the possibility to win. It was ideal. I could sit behind and let other teams work. I’m happy with this win and adding another 50 points for the Maglia Ciclamino. I’m overwhelmed with winning again.”

Here's the report from stage winner Mads Pedersen's Team Lidl-Trek:

Ask anyone at the start of today’s stage from Rovigo to Vicenza, is it for the sprinters or climbers? No one knew… well, except for one man. Mads Pedersen absolutely smashed the final climb to the line, taking his fourth victory of this year’s race and adding another 50 points to his Maglia Ciclamino tally. Mathias Vacek played a pivotal role in the team’s strategy during the final climb to Monte Berico.

As the peloton approached the steep ascent, Vacek took a flyer from the lead group, only to be caught inside the final 600 metres. Mads opened his sprint early and never looked back, che classe!

90 kilometers to go, Juan Ayuso and Isaac del Toro have plenty of teammates around them. RCS photo

Mads' reaction:
"I had to open on the right side close to the barrier, so I went a bit earlier than I really wanted to, but on such a hard day, a final like this, sometimes it's okay to go early, because everyone has burning legs in the last metres, so, yeah, and then, of course, it's nice to see it once, then you know what you're going to and how the peloton is moving around in the last corners. So it was definitely nice to, to have seen it before. Vacek attacking, he was trying to win the stage. You know, he deserved it so much also.

"And if it would have been a little bit more hesitation in the peloton, they would have had 25, 30 seconds, and then I'm pretty sure they would have made it to the finish line. So this was an ideal, you know, he got the chance of winning the stage and then we could sit behind and let all the teams keep a really high speed. So, yeah, ideal the situation for us. I'm just happy with this one and adding another 50 points to the Ciclamino jersey, so let's see how it goes. It's still far to Rome, but now I'm just overwhelmed about winning again."
