Weather at the finish city of Siena at 2:25 PM, local time: 21C (69F), showers in the vicinity and the wind from the southwest at 11 km/hr (7mph). There is a 70% chance of rain, declining to 2% at 4:00 PM.

The stage: Gravel stage featuring around 29 km of unpaved roads. Riders approach the Sienese region via Cortona and Sinalunga on relatively wide roads with lots of changes in gradient and direction. After San Giovanni d’Asso, the peloton hits the Pieve a Salti sector (8 km): tough, rolling, and full of curves. After a second pass through Buonconvento, they face Serravalle (9.3 km), which links directly into San Martino in Grania (9.4 km). The Monteaperti sector is just 600 m but includes double-digit gradients. Asphalt returns briefly before the final gravel at Colle Pinzuto (2.4 km, max 15%). Then it’s on to Siena.

Final kilometers: Early parts are outside Siena on wide, sweeping roads, descending then rising to 2 km out. The route climbs Via Esterna di Fontebranda (up to 9%), enters through Porta di Fontebranda at 900 m, and hits cobbles. Gradients exceed 10%, peaking at 16% around 500 m to go on Via Santa Caterina. A sharp right into Via delle Terme, then Via Banchi di Sotto, and a slight downhill from 300 to 150 m. A final right into Via Rinaldini leads into Piazza del Campo. The last 30 m descend at 7%, with a flat finish.

The race: Koen Bouwman (Jayco-AlUla) did not start.

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Wout Van Aert said: “It’s easy to say this victory means a lot to me. I almost can’t explain it. It had to be here I believe. This place is where my road career started in 2018. To win this stage after a long period without delivering… To do it again, it feels so good. Del Toro did such an amazing ride. I felt bad to not cooperate fully with him because he’s also a competitor to my team-mate Simon Yates on GC. I had to leave the work to him and I had fight all the way to the top of the streets of Siena. I know the final pretty well. I needed to do the move in the last few corners. I almost missed the last one but the experience of Strade Bianche helped me win today”.

Here's the report from new GC leader Isaac Del Toro's Team UAE Team Emriates-XRG:

In a dramatic turn of events on Stage 9 of the Giro d’Italia, Isaac Del Toro claimed the iconic maglia rosa, becoming the first Mexican to ever lead a Grand Tour. The 181-kilometer stage from Gubbio to Siena featured 30 kilometers of treacherous gravel roads, reminiscent of the Strade Bianche, which shattered the peloton and reshuffled the general classification.

While Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) clinched the stage victory with a powerful sprint to the line in Siena’s iconic Piazza del Campo, Del Toro’s performance was the day’s standout. The 21-year-old Mexican rider finished second, but his time gain over his GC rivals propelled him into the overall lead. He now holds a 1-minute and 13-second advantage over teammate Juan Ayuso, with Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) in third, 1 minute and 30 seconds behind.

The day's break 70 km into the stage.

Despite suffering a knee injury on the stage Ayuso minimized his losses, finishing just over a minute behind Del Toro and solidifying his position as a key contender.

As the peloton heads into a well-deserved rest day, all eyes will be on Del Toro and the team as they prepare to defend the maglia rosa in the upcoming stages.

Racing on the white roads of beautiful Tuscany.

Del Toro: “I cannot believe it to be honest, it’s the best feeling, I can’t describe it. I was in the front and avoided the crash. It was pretty hectic and dusty and I ended up in the front with Bernal and sat on that group without collaborating and keeping an eye on the situation. Then when it was clear we were staying away we decided to go for the stage but Wout was good in the end, so congrats to him.

"It still has not sunk in yet. We’ll go back to the hotel now and have a big dinner and regroup. It’s something you dream of when you are a kid, for something like this to happen, but I still can’t believe it’s true.”
