Bergamo - Como, 243 231 kilometers
Jakob Fuglsang beats his nearest chaser by a half-minute. Sirotti photo
Weather at the finish city of Como at 1:30 PM, local time: 29C (85F), sunny, with the wind from the south at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 10% chance of rain and thunderstorms during the afternoon.
The race: Here's the report from winner Jakob Fuglsang's Team Astana.
After 231 demanding kilometers out in the heat at the race of the falling leaves, Astana's leader Jakob Fuglsang powered to an amazing Monument victory in Como, the second of his career after Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2019.
The second Monument of the season, Il Lombardia took the peloton from Bergamo to Como today on a course that covered more than 230 demanding kilometers and offered six tough climbs, like the Colle Gallo, Muro di Sormano or Civiglio. All of the climbs were around seven kilometers long with pitches of over 9% and, on top of this tough course, the weather forecast expected temperatures of around 30 degrees.
It took quite a long time until a group of 11 riders formed the breakaway of the day and opened up a gap of more than three minutes. As expected the peloton paid attention and, on the way up to the third climb of the day, the Madonna del Ghisallo, the breakaway fell apart. Astana Pro Team took control over the reduced bunch and especially Aleksandr Vlasov and Harold Tejada showed excellent form supporting their leader Jakob Fuglsang.
On the descent, the leading group of the race was diminished to seven riders, with Jakob Fuglsang and Aleksandr Vlasov setting the pace.
Heading towards Como, Jakob Fuglsang made the final decisive move and was able to distance himself. Over the last 5 kilometers the Danish rider had quite a big gap and arrived in Como alone almost a minute ahead of George Bennett, who took second. Teammate Aleksandr Vlasov, who did an amazing job for Jakob in the closing kilometers, finished the perfect day for the team off with a strong third place.
- I am super happy to win here today and to add another Monument to my palmarès. It’s amazing. I knew I was coming into this race in good shape and I felt like I could win the race but it is always easier to say that than it is to actually do it. The team was super today and they did a great job for me all day especially Vlasov, who was really strong and with me right until the final kilometers. It was great to have him there with me. I knew that in the final I could win the sprint against Bennett but on that last climb, I decided to speed up and try to see if I could distance him earlier and that worked out perfectly so, like I said before, I am really happy. I was just watching the race now and saw that he [Evenepoel] was not behind us after that bridge. I heard he had crashed but I thought he was still racing. I hope that he is okay. That’s not the way you want anyone to finish a race. – Jakob Fuglsang
- We are more than happy, Jakob took his second Monument win of his career. The team did an amazing job today. Everyone gave his all to support Jakob and at the end he made the right move. It was just a great display of teamwork. But beside that, we hope that Remco is okay and we wish him speedy recovery. – Stefano Zanini

Here's the race organizer's preview and a note about the route change:
On Tuesday, August 11, the organizer posted this note about a change in the race route.
There is a small change for the 114th edition of Il Lombardia presented by UBI Banca. The route of the race organized by RCS Sport / La Gazzetta dello Sport, scheduled for Saturday 15 August, will be 12km shorter than previously announced.
After having climbed Colle Brianza, the peloton will now immediately face the descent towards Oggiono, without the initially planned detour for Lecco / Valmadrera and the subsequent return to Oggiono. This amendment means a total distance of 12km less compared to what was previously announced.
The change does not alter the distinctive features of Il Lombardia presented by UBI Banca, with the start from Bergamo and classic arrival on the Como lakefront, and the Colle Gallo, Colle Brianza, Madonna del Ghisallo, Sormano, Civiglio and San Fermo della Battaglia to climb along the route, totaling 231km.
THE ROUTE
After departing Bergamo in a southerly direction, the route crosses the Bergamo plain in its first 40km to head up the Cavallina valley to Casazza where the Colle Gallo – the first ascent of the race – is tackled. Colle is followed by a fast descent returning from the Seriana valley to Bergamo, then the route re-enters lowland roads that lead to Brianza. There’s a short passage to Colle Brianza and a descent to Pescate heading towards Valmadrera and then towards Oggiono and, finally, through Pusiano, Asso and down the descent to Onno and on to Bellagio. This is where the Ghisallo ascent – with gradients of up to 14% on wide roads with hairpin bends – begins.
The following very fast descent is on long straights and ends at Maglio where, immediately after a right turn, the climb of the Colma di Sormano begins. After a few kilometers of medium slopes, and a few hundred meters after Sormano, the route heads up the Muro di Sormano on a narrow, very steep road – 2km long with a gradient up to 15%. It’s partly inside a small wood, with very narrow bends and slopes that, for around 1km, exceed 25% up to almost 30%.
Once past the Colma, the route follows the descent to Nesso, where the riders then take the coastal road to reach Como. Next they face the hard climb to Civiglio (614m) with slopes almost always around 10% – and with a marked narrowing of the roadway at the top of the climb – before going back down and through Como to hit the last climb of San Fermo della Battaglia (397m). There are two feed zones: the first at km 94-97 and the second at km 151-154.
LAST KM
The last 10km start inside the area of Como on wide avenues, up to the railway underpass where the final ascent of San Fermo della Battaglia begins. The slope is around 7% (max 10%). The route passes several hairpin bends up to the brow at around 5km from the finish. The descent, on a wide, well-paved road ends at the last kilometre.
