Stage 1 finish

Marcel Kittel wins stage 1. Photo ©Sirotti

Stage one rated ascentRated ascents:

The Race: A hard, hilly day in Yorkshire yielded German sprinter Marcel Kittel as the first Yellow Jersey of the year. Just as the sprinters were getting going, a bad crash took down Mark Cavendish and Simon Gerrans, slowing much of the peloton. A few were ahead and safe and Kittel was the fastest of them.

A last-minute flyer by Fabian Cancellara almost won the day, but he was caught within sight of the finish.

A savvy escape that started a almost the drop of the flag let the oldest rider in the peloton, Jens Voigt, hoover up the lion's share of the KOM points. For a report of the stage in detail, please see our stage 1 live-updates.

Live updates:

Weather in Leeds @ 12:30 local time: 15C (59F), lots of blue sky. Wind from the west at 31 kph (19 mph), 64% humidity, some clouds, no chance of rain.

Km 12 (4:14 PDT): Good Day. All 198 riders started. Already we have a break: Jens Voigt (Trek), Nicolas Edet (Bretagne) and Benoit Jarrier (Cofidis) with the peloton 2min 15sec behind. The trio attacked from the gun and seemed to gain the almost immediate consent of the peloton. So far, there seems to be no interest in chasing. Lotto Belisol (André Greipel is staying near the front) and Giant-Shimano are leading the peloton with Omega-Pharma close at hand.

As the race goes through the town of Otley the crowds are big and enthusiastic. This is the fourth British visit for the Tour. The first being the badly received 1974 stage in Plymouth.

Km 31: The trio leads the peloton by 2min 40sec. FDJ sprinter Arnaud Demare just got a quick bike change and was safely paced back to the peloton by a teammate.

Km 42: Break member Nicolas Edet suffered a mechanical, got a new bike and motored back up to Voigt and Jarrier. The gap between the trio and the pack is 3min 7sec. Jens Voigt is the oldest rider in this year's peloton. He'll turn 43 in September. This is his 17th Tour participation, equalling the record held by George Hincapie and Stuart O'Grady.

Km 57: Romain Bardet(?), riding near the back of the peloton, looked to touch wheels and fell. Sky's mechanic generously got his bike working and the rider was soon up and chasing. The gap to the trio sits at 3min 14sec. Giant-Shimano and Lotto remain at the front. The Tour is passing a flock of yellow painted sheep.

Km 64: Coming to the 2014 Tour's first rated ascent, the 4th category Cray. There's just a single KOM point available. The roads are very narrow with stone walls near the verge and when the pack slows on a hill, some riders in the back of the pack have to slow to almost a stop.

Km 68: The crowds at the top of the Cray are thick. Voigt led out the sprint to the top and Edet, looking to win the single KOM point in play had trouble getting by because of the narrow path through the spectators lining the road. He did, but Benoit Jarrier surprised Edet and was first to the top.

Km 77: Jens Voigt takes off to take the 20 sprinter's points in the 2014 Tour's first intermediate sprint. He puts his head down and keeps going. Now Edet and Jarrier, surprised, have to chase down one of cycling's hardest, toughest men. Cannondale is lined up back in the peloton, looking to help Sagan get some of the remaining sprint points. But Bryan Coquard beat both Greipel and Sagan. Cavendish was fourth in the field sprint.

Km 86: Through the feed station, Voigt is gone, 30 seconds ahead of Edet and Jarrier and 4min 56sec ahead of the peloton. Voigt has 104 km (about 64 miles) to go to the finish. Voigt's DS Alain Gallopin said that Voigt attacked after the intermediate sprint to stay away for the remaining two climbs and therefore take the polka-dot jersey. Voigt is pounding away, thrashing his bike. It's not pretty, but at km 91 he's now a full minute ahead of Edet and Jarrier.

Km 104: Over the third category Buttertubs, Voigt is alone and going through a defile of huge crowds. He crests the mountain 3min 14sec ahead of Edet, Jarrier is not too far behind. The peloton is at 4min 22sec. Some of the peloton has had to come to a halt because of the ultra narrow path through the spectators.

Km 120: Edet and Jarrier have been caught by the peloton, now 2min 58sec behind Voigt, who is pressing on to the third category Grinton Moor ascent. The Buttertubs climb has caused a split in the peloton with Joaquin Rodriguez, Thibaut Pinot, Chris Horner among the dropped riders. The Rodriguez group is a minute and a half behind the Froome/Contador main peloton. Is Rodriguez' Tour over already?

Km 130: Voigt was first over the Grinton Moor ascent. But his lead is getting smaller (he went up the Grinton Moor in his lowest gear), now just 34 seconds. Voigt will be in polka-dots tonight, the 2014 Tour de France's first King of the Mountains. Saxo-Tinkoff and BMC have put riders on the front, perhaps to make sure Joaquin Rodriguez stays off the back. Both Froome and Contador are staying alert and near the front. Voigt was caught shortly after the crest of the Grinton Moor. Vincenzo Nibali has just shown up near the front.

Km 140: The chasing Rodriguez group can see the peloton when the road straightens. The gap is down to 25 seconds. In the Rodriguez group is Alessandro Petacchi, an important member of Mark Cavendish's leadout train. Lotto-Belisol is spending watts like madmen at the front, making sure André Greipel is in contention for the sprint and the first yellow jersey.

Km 145: The Rodriguez/Petacchi/Horner group has caught the peloton, which has slowed. Average speed of the stage so far is 38.3 km/hr.

Km 162: Nope, Petacchi as well as Elia Viviani and Sacha Modolo have not made it back to the main peloton. At the front it's Omega-Pharma, Lotto-Belisol and Tinkoff-Saxo. With the moderate pace, the riders are all bunched up. Arnaud Demare's leadout man Mickaël Delage along with Elia Viviani and Ji Cheng (the first Chinese Tour participant) have just rejoined the peloton.

Km 175, 16 to go: Lotto-Belisol is starting to line up. Peter Sagan is riding next to André Greipel. Belkin riders Lars Boom and Stef Clement have crashed. Cannondale and Katusha and Omega Pharma are lining up at the front as well.

Km 180: OK, here we go, the speed is going up and the pack is starting to line out. Riders are trying to move up. Astana is leading the pack on the left, Katusha to the right. Leadout riders are looking back for their prime sprinters. Peter Sagan is well positioned. Who will get the first yellow jersey?

Km 184: Adam Hansen (Lotto-Belisol) is leading the pack. The road is rolling and Katusha can't keep up. Omega Pharma (6 riders in a line) with Cavendish has taken over. Another rise in the road and the pack is zooming. Giant-Shimano is trying to come up to Omega Pharma.

Bam! Fabian Cancellara has gone clear. What a move.

A crash! Cavendish (looks like Simon Gerrans and Cavendish were leaning on each other with Cavendish trying to go through a hole that wasn't there) is holding his shoulder and looking to be in much pain. This doesn't look good.

Cancellara is caught.

It's a drag race between the remaining upright sprinters and Marcel Kittel beats Peter Sagan to win the Tour's first stage and yellow jersey.
