Clement Venturini wins the final stage

The race: Here's the story from GC winner Stefan Denifl's Aqua Blue Sport team:

Olympics 50 Craziest Stories

Stefan Denifl has won the 2017 Tour of Austria.

He rolled, victorious, into the Austrian town of Wels to clinch the yellow jersey after a hilly final day. It is Aqua Blue Sport’s first general classification victory.

Denifl seized control of the GC on Stage Four to Kitzbuheler Horn as he finished second behind stage winner Angel Lopez. It was Stage Five that he earned his jersey as he raced against the whole peloton over the Grossglockner Pass. He repeatedly responded to multiple attacks and a daredevil 18 kilometre long downhill pursuit of Lopez ensured that the jersey was his for the final stage.

Stage six travelled across 203 kilometres from Saint Johann – Alpenbdorf to the town of Wels. Multiple attacks went clear as the teams began to challenge Aqua Blue Sport. Several climbs put some order on the chaos but then on the final second category Hochlecken ascent Katusha rushed to the front. The information from the pack was that they were attempting to devastate the fast sprint Italian team of Elia Viviani. It split the peloton and there were multiple groups on the road. Some of the Aqua Blue Sport riders more suited to the flat lands were isolated but climber Dan Pearson stayed and protected Denifl.

The peloton stayed clear of the second group and rolled into the finish area – as they crossed the line for the first time Denifl showed the yellow jersey at the front as a tribute to the fans.

Two laps later he crossed the line and straight into the arms of his family and teammates. The local crowd went crazy with delight and chanted his name.

He said: “This is an amazing day – thanks to everyone on the team, my team mates, the sport directors, the soigneurs, the mechanics, the media staff, all the people that helped me. I want to say thanks to the Austrian fans, to my girlfriend – it was just amazing. It is my biggest win, it was about to happen for a long time. I am getting close to 30 years – I have been sometimes close to something big. Now I am just super happy and proud that I was able to finish it off today.”

Stephen Moore, team owner, said: “A rich congratulation to Stefan and the whole team – this is a great result for not only Stefan but also the whole team. The riders in Austria worked hard the whole week to achieve this and so did our staff. Stefan has been working hard to achieve this and we are delighted to give him the opportunity to show his class.”

Friday, July 7: Stage 5, Kitzbühel - Alpendorf, 212.5 km

Stefan Denifl

Stefan Denifl (in leader's yellow/red jersey) maintained his GC lead in stage 5

The race: Here's the story from stage winner Ben O'Connor's Dimension Data team.

Olympics 50 Craziest Stories

Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka’s Ben O’Connor put in a huge performance on stage 5 of Tour of Austria. O’Connor was on the attack the whole day and at the end, he finished it off beautifully with a solo victory.

With 213 km and more than 3000 meters of climbing to overcome, today’s stage was definitely one of the hardest ones in this year’s Tour of Austria. However, it didn’t prevent O’Connor from attacking already on the first categorized climb of the day.

The 21-year-old Australian jumped away from the peloton to join a small but strong group of riders at the front. When the breakaway started on the biggest challenge of the stage, the HC-climb Hochtor, the group began to split up as only two riders could follow O’Connor’s pace. Yesterday’s stage winner Miguel Ángel Lopez (Astana) attacked from the peloton and managed to bridge across, ultimately leaving only him and O’Connor at the front.

With about 40 km to go, O’Connor put in yet another attack to go solo. However, as the chase group behind him grew in size, he didn’t get too far ahead. Meanwhile, both Daniel Teklehaimanot and Mekseb Debesay had joined the group. If anybody thought the many attacks had left O’Connor empty for the final part of the stage, he proved that wasn’t the case. With 20 km left to go, he attacked once again together with Riccardo Zoidl (Team Felbermayr – Simplon Wels). The duo quickly opened up a big gap and left the chase group behind for good.

As the two riders took on the final kilometer, the road started to kick up again. Soon after, a tireless O’Connor put in his final attack. This time, nobody was able to follow him and O’Connor soloed away to take his first victory in the colors of Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka. Stefan Denifl (Aqua Blue Sport) finished in 10th place to keep the yellow jersey, while O’Connor moved up to fifth place overall after today’s impressive performance. Teklehaimanot is seventh in the general classification.

Ben O’Connor: “This has been an absolutely magical stage for me. It was super long and super tough. I actually had a small crash at the start but I managed to get back on my bike right away. I then saw a chance and bridged across to the front group. We worked well together and later Lopez joined us. Then, in the headwind, we were able to sit in and save a little energy. In the final part of the stage, I managed to slip away with Zoidl since the group wasn’t very organized. As we started on the final climb, I knew Zoidl was suffering and since I felt really good myself, I took my chance with 600 meters to go and just went full gas. I managed to drop him and take the win. This is really incredible”.

Thursday, July 6: Stage 4, Salzburg - Kitzbüheler Horn, 82.7 km

Miguel Angel Lopez

New GC leader Stefan Denifl climbing to the finish

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

The race: Here's the report from new GC leader Stefan Denifl's Aqua Blue Sport team.

Stefan Denifl is in the yellow jersey after finishing second on the stunning Kitzbuheler Horn stage.

It was an incredibly fast 82 kilometre stage from Salzburg Amadeus Airport to the mammoth peak. 32 degrees Celcius temperatures and blazing sunshine made the day in the Tyrol region all the more difficult.

Aqua Blue Sport devised a plan to place Denifl in the best position at the base of the climb.

Immediately after the flag dropped an attack went clear but they were doomed from the outset as Astana controlled the pack. They brought the break back and then Denifl rushed forward as Astana hit the throttle on the early slopes. There were 12 riders soon in a selection. With five kilometres remaining Astana rider Miguel Angel Lopez found his teammates burned off. He went clear and Denifl hit the 19 per cent, sheer cliff side, gradient with gusto as he pursued. Riding with a tempo that was unchanged he tracked the Colombian up along the switch back turns.

As they burst out of the tree line and into the rarefied air near the summit – Lopez emerged first to cheers. But then Denifl broke through the trees and the mountainside erupted. Fans ran alongside him, shouting encouragement for the local rider.

All the way up the ascent Denifl’s father, Earnest, a former Olympic mountain biker, had stencilled his son’s name. Also Denifl’s family and many of his friends were on the mountainside. The biggest welcome was from the fans who cheered every pedal stroke for the Austrian. He crossed the line just behind the Colombian climber – and is now in the yellow jersey – 41 seconds ahead of his nearest rival.

At the finish he was swamped by fans and when he caught his breath he said: “It was a good day for us - for me and my teammates. We have worked so well, and so hard for the whole week. I am so happy for how the guys have helped me this week. This is one of my goals, the Tour of Austria. The climb today is close to my home place, the Kitzbüheler, it is a brutal climb. I paced myself pretty well and I was really close to the stage win. I want to say thanks so much to my DS Nicki Sørensen who helped who helped me keep everything under control. We do not have the stage win but we have the yellow jersey. I am pretty confident with my teammates for tomorrow.”

Wednesday, July 5: Stage 3, Wieselburg - Altheim, 226.2 km

Elia Viviani

Elia Viviani wins his second 2017 Tour of Austria stage

Tour de France: the Inside Story

The race: Here's the report from GC leader Sep Vanmarcke's Cannondale-Drapac team.

Sep Vanmarcke sprinted to third place on stage three of the Tour of Austria on Wednesday. It’s Vanmarcke’s fourth top-five finish in as many days. The result in Altheim allowed him to hold tight to race leader’s yellow.

“I knew sprinting for podium would be the best I could do today, with Viviani in the bunch,” he said. “So I’m happy I did that. We aimed for the stage win again,” Vanmarcke added. “None of us can win a bunch sprint, so we attacked all day. The racing was tough for the first 50 kilometers, until eventually three riders got into a break.”

The trio remained under control of the peloton and was never given a bigger advantage than three minutes.

“We caught them back at 60 kilometers from the line, and then it started all over again: attack after attack,” Vanmarcke said. “My teammates were so strong and were represented in most of the breakaway attempts.”

The Italian national team, riding for Elia Viviani, on loan from Team Sky, closed down a late race three-rider escape as the stage reached its finale. “Unfortunately a sprint couldn’t be avoided,” Vanmarcke said. “So my teammates did a lead-out for me again.”

Viviani won the sprint. Israel Cycling Academy’s Jason Lowndes was able to throw his bike across the line just ahead of Vanmarcke, who took third.

Another podium for the Belgian. One more day in yellow. He’ll savor it on Thursday as he expects it to hand it over at the stage four finish in St. Johann – Alpenbdorf.

“The climb in tomorrow’s stage is really hard, way too hard for me,” he said. “I’m definitely going to lose the leader’s jersey. But that’s OK. I have thoroughly enjoyed wearing it for the first half of this tour.”

Vanmarcke had one rider less to help protect his lead today. Australian Brendan Canty was forced sideline this morning after his stage one crash. A chainring pierced the skin of his lower leg, deep enough to take a minuscule chip from his shinbone.

Although Canty did take to the start in stage two, he had already expressed his doubts about being able to finish the Tour of Austria. “The problem is that the stages get harder from here,” he said. “And there’s also the concern of infection, since it was a dirty cut from a chainring.”

The decision was made for Canty. “Our sports director, Ken Vanmarcke, came to see me this morning and informed me that the team doctors made a decision that I shouldn’t start,” he said. “I think mostly to let the wound heal and limit the risk of infection.”

The neo-pro will fly home to Girona, Spain, to recover from his injuries. “I’ll probably take a couple of days complete rest, as there’s time before my next race,” he said. “There’s no need to rush back into training. I’ll find out what the doctors think regarding training lightly on it,” Canty added. “The road rash is pretty sore too, so I’d probably be happy letting that heal a little bit too!”

Tuesday, July 4: Stage 2, Vienna (Wien) - Pöggstall, 199.6 km

Tom-Jelte Slagter

Tom-Jelte Slagter wins stage two

The race: Here's the report from Cannondale-Drapac.

Olympics 50 Craziest Stories

When race leader Sep Vanmarcke moved into the Tour of Austria race lead on Monday, he made it clear in post-race interviews that a stage win on Tuesday was the team’s next aim. It was mission accomplished in Pöggstall.

Tom-Jelte Slagter won a four-up sprint to take his first victory of the season. Vanmarcke was best of the rest, sprinting in for fifth place. The stage result was enough to keep Vanmarcke in yellow and add the green points jersey to his collection.

“Our sports director once again crafted a smart plan that we executed perfectly and which delivered us the win,” said Vanmarcke. “Lots of kudos to him. The plan was to let a small breakaway go, preferably a group of continental riders, to create a situation we could easily control and take initiative in the final,” Slagter added. “We executed the plan perfectly as a team.”

Five riders escaped early. None were a threat to the overall or a chance for the stage win, so Cannondale-Drapac granted the group a gap. “Ryan Mullen and Will Clarke led the peloton from that point and they worked tirelessly the entire day,” said Vanmarcke. “In the final, when we entered the climbing section, they had brought the breakaway back to the bunch.”

Kristijan Koren and Tom Scully went on the attack following the catch. Scully continued to attack until he slipped away on the last local lap. “Alex [Howes] bridged the gap to Scully on a steep climb,” explained Vanmarcke. “Tom kept the pace high and eventually Alex was on his own. He got 25 seconds, but because of the headwind and the attacks from the peloton, he was caught.”

Slagter picked up where Howes left off, throwing down an attack that eventually drew three other riders away with him. “The last kilometers were tough. The climbs were very steep, and there was wind all day,” Slagter said. “I could escape with three other riders and I felt it was going to be us who would contest the stage win. I hatched a plan for the last kilometer, started my sprint in second position and won.

“I am so happy and proud of the result,” he added. “It wouldn’t have been possible without a dedicated effort from the whole team.”

As for the yellow jersey, Vanmarcke controlled the reduced bunch as Slagter toiled away up the road. Heading into the final, Vanmarcke covered several late race moves. The defense kept him well-positioned on the run-in to the line. The energy he expended wasn’t enough to keep him from contesting, and winning, the chase group sprint. “It was a perfect day with the team,” said Vanmarcke. “We took complete control of the race.”

The stage win underscores Cannondale-Drapac’s intent at Tour of Austria. The team has already taken one stage win, two stage podiums and worn the leader’s jersey, mountain’s jersey and points jersey. “So far, the race has been treating us well. It’s a tough race with long stages, so we've still got some hard days ahead of us,” Slagter said. “But we’ll fight for it everyday. The long stages are beneficial to us, I think. Everyone has been doing his work great so far, which is motivating for us all. We’ll see if we can take another stage win this week.”

While stage wins remain the focus for Cannondale-Drapac’s Austria squad, Vanmarcke thinks he might be able to keep the leader’s jersey for another day.

“The stage tomorrow is flattish, with some hills in the final,” he said. “It will probably not be hard enough to prevent a bunch sprint. Which means I stand a good chance to keep the leader’s jersey for another day. After that, we enter the mountains where it will be near impossible to retain it.”

Monday, July 3: Stage 1, Graz - Vienna (Wien), 193.8 km

Elia Viviani

Elia Viviani wins stage one.

The race: Here's the story from new GC leader Sep Vanmarcke's Cannondale-Drapac's team.

Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle

Back-to-back top-five finishes on the two opening stages of Österreich Rundfahrt (Tour of Austria) put Sep Vanmarcke into the yellow race leader's jersey on Monday. The Belgian began his campaign with fifth place in the opening prologue, a short 800-metre uphill time trial, before sprinting to second place behind Elia Viviani (Team Italy) from a reduced bunch on stage two.

"I'm happy with second place today because I knew I couldn't beat Viviani," said Vanmarcke. "The jersey was a pleasant surprise."

Will Clarke sits second overall, three seconds behind his teammate. He time trialled to third in the opening prologue, which he won last year, and finished in the reduced peloton on stage two. “I trained a lot on my power for the short efforts leading up to the race, and had a target of doing well here,” said Clarke. “I would have liked to have repeated my win in the prologue from last year but I came up a bit short.”

Cannondale-Drapac didn’t go into the Tour of Austria with general classification ambitions. The eight-rider squad has been tasked with racing opportunistically in the pursuit of stage wins. The 1-2 punch overall is a result of the aggressive approach.

The open nature of the first road stage created a battle for the early break. Numerous attempts failed before an escape was allowed up the road. Cannondale-Drapac was represented in several early moves, but missed out on the one that was eventually granted a gap.

The peloton controlled the five-rider move while #GreenArgyle conserved energy in the bunch. The focus was then directed towards the end of the stage. “Our director had told us there would be a high chance of echelons after 160 kilometres,” said Vanmarcke. “We were prepared for that and had six riders in the first group of 30 that formed in the wind.”

Prepared may be an understatement. Cannondale-Drapac was integral in creating the move that ultimately positioned Vanmarcke to move into yellow. “The goal was to use the strong winds in the final to split the peloton,” sport director Ken Vanmarcke explained. “There was a five-kilometre section with open roads. We put in an all-or-nothing attempt there and created the split."

“We all attacked throughout the last 15 kilometres, because there were still a lot of sprinters in our group,” Sep said. “But no one was able to get away, partly because of the strong headwinds.”

Although the attacks proved unfruitful, a new plan was hatched to contest the stage win. “I was tapped to do the sprint,” said Sep. “Ryan Mullen and Tom Scully gave me a lead-out and I managed second. It was impossible to beat Elia Viviani, so second is the best I was going to do. I didn’t aim for the leader’s jersey specifically, because I was focused on the stage. It was only after the finish that my teammates told me I took the leader’s jersey.”

The new race leader expects to hand over the yellow jersey soon, potentially to a teammate. “There will be tough stages to come, too hard for me to keep the leader’s jersey,” Sep said. “With the team, we’re looking forward to tomorrow’s stage as it suits us, with a tough final. Our focus will be specifically on the stage win tomorrow, since we have several riders within the team that can win.”

“It is great that we have the jersey, but the Kitzbüheler Horn on Thursday is a 10-kilometer climb, with an average gradient of 12.7%. Neither Sep nor Will have a chance to lead after that stage,” Ken said. “Friday is a climber’s stage too. We know this and therefore won’t change our strategy. We'll continue to focus on stage wins.”

Sunday, July 2: Prologue, Grazer Schlossberg .8km timed hill-climb

Oscar Gatto

Oscar Gatto on his stage winning ride

The race: Here's the story from stage winner Oscar Gatto's Astana team.

Bicycle History

Oscar Gatto and Miguel Angel Lopez brought a nice double victory to Astana Proteam in the prologue of the Tour of Austria, which has started today in Graz.

In a very short (800 meters) uphill individual time trial (with 16% maximal gradient) Gatto and Lopez marked almost the same time, while Miguel Angel missed less than one second to his teammate.

"The prologue was very hard. Yes, it was only 800 meters, but the climb was very tough and the riders had to give their all to get a good result. We had an opportunity to try this route for several times yesterday and today in the morning, so we knew it quite well. Oscar Gatto did a perfect race, he is in a great shape right now. I think, this victory is well deserved by him. Also, Miguel Angel was very strong on the distance, he fully recovered and reached a high level. Tomorrow we will have a fast stage and we have Riccardo Minali in the roster, he can do well in sprint. And, of course, we will do our best to protect our leadership", explained sports director Bruno Cenghialta.

It was a day of very short (800 m), but very intensive prologue from Graz to Schlossberg. Oscar Gatto finished with the best time (2 minutes and 11 seconds), which finally brought him a victory. Miguel Angel Lopez was very close to his teammate and missed just a little to overpass him, taking second place in prologue.

After the prologue, Oscar Gatto took the lead in the mountain classification too, while Astana leads in team’s classification.

Tomorrow will be held the first normal stage of the race: 193,8 km from Graz to Vienna.
