Story of the Giro d'Italia, volume 1

The Race: Tejay Van Garderen has been on the final podium of every edition of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. In 2011 he was third, in 2012 he came in second and now he has made it two consecutive first places.

The day's break went clear in the first kilometers and had a lot of horsepower, including Jens Voigt in his final race as a professional.

The escapees were caught with just a few miles to go, setting things up for a replay of stage one, a sprint between rivals and friends, Alex Howes and Kiel Reijnan.

Reijnen had taken stage one and this time Howes was the victor.

Cycling's 50 Craziest Stories

The Race: First he out-climbed the specialty climbers. Now Tejay Van Garderen has out time-trialed everyone on an uphill course that was marred by cold rain. Without a doubt Van Garderen is a deserving leader of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge.

With his record-breaking ride on the Vail course, he now leads Tom Danielson by 1 minute and 32 seconds.

While Van Garderen maintained his firm hold on the lead, Rafal Majka was pushed from second down to fourth as Danielson rose to second place. Serghei Tvetcov maintained his third position in the GC.

Stage 5 map and profile |

Cycling Heroes: The Golden Years

The Race: Stage five was a cold and rainy day in the Rockies. Laurent Didier (Trek) attacked the day's break on the long Hoosier pass. He was caught on the downhill side. But Didier wasn't done.

He went clear again, this time on the final climb, the Boreas Pass (the stage profile below the results shows the climbs). He had a slender lead coming into Breckenridge and was almost caught. Didier crossed the finish line first with a bike length or two between himself and Janier Acevedo. This is Didier's first World Tour victory this season.

Race leader Tejay Van Garderen preserved his lead when he finished ninth. Second place Rafal Majka right with him, finishing tenth. The gap between the two remains twenty seconds.

Thursday, Augsut 21: Stage 4, Colorado Springs Circuit Race, 70 miles (113 kilometers)

Stage 4 map and profile |

The Race: A break of twelve riders escaped the pack's clutches in the stage's first kilometers. They were given some freedom and at one point they had a lead of about four minutes. But the peloton started chewing away at the gap, cutting it almost in half by the time the stage was half done.

With less than thirty kilometers remaining, racing legend Jens Voigt (Trek Factory Racing), shot away from the break in a hunt for solo racing glory.

Voigt came close to winning the stage. But from a lead of a minute and a half, Voigt had slightly less than a minute with five miles to go and it kept falling. He did keep his chasers 20 seconds behind for quite a while. Just after the ride kite, the pack flew by Voigt.

Elia Viviani, who is having a terrific season, won the sprint. Race leader Tejay van Garderen finished 21st, in the front group, to keep his overall lead.

Wednesday, August 20: Stage 3, Gunnison - Monarch Mountain, 96 miles (155 km)

Stage 3 map and profile |

Bicycle History

The Race: Though the day was filled with aggression, the best riders were together for the final ascent to the top of Monarch Mountain. Tom Danielson had hoped to use the final climb to take the lead, but his attacks lacked enough punch to dislodge the other contenders.

Tejay Van Garderen was patient, and knowing he was a fast finisher, waited until the final kilometer to unleash a blistering attack. It was an attack so powerful only the 2014 Tour de France King of the Mountains, Rafal Majka, could go with. And when Van Garderen made his final surge, even Majka was beaten.

Race leader Alex Howes could not match the hot pace of the Monarch Mountain ascent and was dropped.

Van Garderen's masterful stage win gives him the GC lead by 20 seconds over Rafal Majka.

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

The Race: The day's break formed on the stage's first big ascent, McClure Pass (see the profile below the results and map). On the next big obstacle, Kebler Pass, Hincapie Sportswear rider Robin Carpenter was alone and off the front. The pass is unpaved and when it started to rain the road became dangerous.

Officials neutralized the race on the descent and stopped the riders before the final ascent, noting the time gaps. After the restart, with the time gaps respected, Carpenter just continued on his merry way, leaving the rest of the peloton behind. His 45-second gap shrank, but he was able to cross the line alone.

Race leader Kiel Rijnen was not able to stay with the leading group, allowing Alex Howes, who finished second both yesterday and today, to become the new race leader.

Stage 1 map and profile |

Story of the Tour de France Volume 2

The Race: A group of about seven riders went clear early, but the break was never allowed to gain even two minutes. With about fifteen miles to go, the only remaining breakaway rider was Ben Jacques-Maynes. Jens Voigt ripped himself clear of a now reduced peloton and bridged up to Jacques-Maynes. Eventually, both were caught.

Closing in on Aspen, Javier Megias (Novo Nordisk) took off and soon thereafter Kiel Rijnen (United Healthcare) and Alex Howes (Garmin-Sharp) had made it a trio dangling off the front.

Howes tried his luck in the sprint first, but Reijnen caught and passed him to win the stage and to become the race's first overall leader.
