Alberto Contador

Stage and overall winner Alberto Contador used a road bike for the race's final time trial

The Race: At the start of the final stage rain was falling in Eibar. Giant-Alpecin's Caleb Fairly was the first rider off.

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

But, with every passing day this season, Alberto Contador's form has been improving. He started today's time trial just six seconds behind overnight leader Sergio Henao. Given Contador's superb time trial skills, Henao's lead was very fragile.

And come the ride, Contador delivered the goods, beating second-place Nario Quintana and Henao by 18 seconds and making him the overall winner by twelve seconds.

This gives Contador his fourth overall win at the Tour of the Basque Country.

After the race, Contador delivered another surprise. Widely expected to retire at the end of this season, Contador said he is not going to hang up the chamois.

Here's the press release from the race organizer: After winning the Itzulia, Alberto Contador confirmed that he will not finish his career, and reiterates that the next season he will keep competing.

"I want to continue enjoying and doing what I like and when the day to leave the bike arrives, it will arrive. I will not give a date". The leader of the team Tinkoff reviewed how he won the race. "I don't like to win in this way, but here with this time trial I thought it was the best way". Happy and with a smile on his face, the rider of team Tinkoff closed his first part of the season with an important victory.

"With good feelings, physicals and mental", now he will be a part of the competitions to be ready for his main goals of the year: the Tour and Olympic Games.

Stage 5 profile

Diego Rosa

Not the usual way to cross the line when winning a stage, but it worked for Diego Rosa

The Race: Here's the story from new race leader Sergio Henao's Sky team.

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

Sergio Henao stormed into the race lead at the Tour of the Basque Country with a strong display of climbing on the penultimate stage. The Colombian jumped from the peloton on the final climb and only Alberto Contador (Tinkoff) could stay with him as he finished in second place, three minutes and 41 seconds behind solo stage winner Diego Rosa (Astana).

Overnight leader Wilco Kelderman (LottoNL-Jumbo) relinquished the yellow jersey having been dropped on the last ascent, and he finished over a minute down on Henao after crossing the line alongside the industrious Mikel Landa.

Those results mean Henao holds a six-second lead over Contador heading into a hilly 16.5km concluding time trial.

Rosa had attacked from the breakaway 100km from the finish, and as he pressed home his advantage the race became increasingly fractured behind. Henao and Contador sprung clear on the lower slopes of the Alto de Arrate, and only Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) and Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) managed to get back in touch with that pair at the finish, setting up a mouthwatering finale on Saturday.

A delighted Henao spoke to us back at the bus and told us that he's over the moon to have secured the yellow jersey. He said: "I'm really happy. I've fought really hard every day to take the leader's jersey and I finally have it!

"When me and Alberto [Contador] went to the front we both wanted to gain time ahead of tomorrow's time trial and we worked well together. The team did a super job today and I'm really happy with all my team-mates. Tactically today we did a great job today too - Mikel's attack before the last climb forced the other teams to work. Everyone has been super focused across the week."

And looking ahead to tomorrow's time trial, Henao is confident that the course suits him. He added: "It's a hillier course than last year and the uphill sections will be really important. The time trial suits me better this year."

Sport Director Dario Cioni concurs with Henao and believes he stands a good chance tomorrow, while he also praised the work of the team. He said: "The course is very typical and it's good for Sergio. The strongest guy of the first four riders will win the overall and if Sergio pulls it off it will also be thanks to the work of all his team-mates. In this race we've shown we are the strongest team and to finish if off will be an amazing achievement."

Story of the day: A large 24-man break, including David Lopez, went clear early in the race before Rosa launched his own attack. Maxime Monfort (Lotto Soudal), Nicolas Edet (Cofidis), Carlos Verona (Etixx - Quick-Step) and Sander Armee (Lotto Soudal) set about chasing him down as four groups formed on the road.
After cresting the penultimate climb only Monfort and Armee remained in the second group chasing Rosa, while the reduced peloton caught what remained of Lopez's group.

It was a brutal day in Spain, with eight categorised climbs, and Vasil Kiryienka and Xabi Zandio abandoned the race midway through the stage, reducing the team to six riders.

But Lopez was doing a fine job and he attacked again 23km from the line before Landa bridged across to his fellow countryman in what looked to be a pre-planned move.

The pair were joined by Verona, Simon Clarke (Cannondale) and Serge Pauwels (Dimension Data), and behind Contador and Nairo Quintana (Movistar) were forced to work to bring the group back, allowing Henao to sit comfortably in the bunch.

Landa was eventually caught a kilometre up the last ascent as Henao and Contador hit out, while up front Rosa showed no signs of fatigue as he powered to a fine win.

Having crested the climb it seemed unlikely that Henao or Contador would be able to outsprint one another and so it proved, as they crossed the line at the same time to hand the Colombian the lead.

The Race: Here's the stage story from stage winner Samuel Sanchez's BMC team.

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

07 April, 2016, Orio (ESP): Samuel Sánchez crossed the line with a look of pure happiness as he took the win on Stage 4 of Vuelta al Pais Vasco and claimed his first victory for the season.

Stage 4 was nothing short of tough with 6 categorized climbs distributed over the 165km course, but it was a late attack from Sanchez with just under two kilometers to go that sealed the victory.

Sánchez' win is another addition to his already impressive results list at Vuelta al Pais Vasco, taking his number of stage wins to eight. He has retained his fourth place on the General Classification, 8 seconds behind new race leader Wilco Kelderman (Team LottoNL-Jumbo).

When we managed to tear Sánchez away from his fans after the stage, this is what he had to say.

The look on your face as you crossed the finish line was of pure happiness. Can you describe this moment?

"For me it was a really, really beautiful day. The victory is really amazing. It's a victory for my mind. It's more important for me, for my mind and for the team. For BMC Racing Team today was a hard day because at the beginning of the stage, six of my teammates and I split from the peloton so we worked a lot to catch the first group. Then we caught the group before the final and I won the stage for my teammates."

It was by no means an easy stage today, how did you feel in the legs?

"The stage was really hard. A lot of rain, a bit dangerous, a lot of big climbs and the pace of the race is so high. There were a lot of attacks at the final. When Contador attacked I stayed in his wheel and counter attacked in the last 200 meters of the climb. And then I went full gas to the finish and I could raise my hands as I crossed the line."

This is your first individual win since 2013 and it is in Spain. How much more special does that make it?

"It's my first individual win with BMC Racing Team. My last individual win was at the Dauphine in 2013 and this is too many years for me. Now it is a really, really beautiful day for me and for my mind it is a super important victory."

And now looking forward to the next stages?

"The GC is difficult and tomorrow is a really difficult day. It's particularly difficult because of my rivals and the weather. Tomorrow is up and down and with a climb for the finish, so we will take things day by day. For now we will enjoy today."

Yvon Ledanois, Sports Director: "At the beginning Samuel was dropped early in the stage but the team pulled for 25 kilometers. We took the responsibility of bringing him back to the bunch. In the final I told Samuel to stay in the front and with 1.5 kilometers to go Contador had attacked and I said to Samuel if you have the legs now is the time to go, go, go. The team did a very good job for him. It's an amazing result for him and an amazing result for the team."

"We knew that it was a perfect stage for him, particularly the final, but we didn't put a lot of pressure on him. I knew he had the legs to win."

Stephen Cummings wins stage 3

The Race: Here's what stage winner Steve Cummings' Dimension Data team said about the day's competition.

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

The 3rd stage of the Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco was a perfect day for Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka as Steve Cummings attacked with 1km to go and soloed to a magnificent stage victory. Cummings just held off the chasing pack which was led home by Simon Gerrans (Orica-Greenedge) with Fabio Felline (Trek-Segafredo) in 3rd.

Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka could not have scripted the stage any better as Daniel Teklehaimanot got into the early break of the day with 4 other riders. The stage was 193km in length with 3 categorised climbs coming in the final 35km of the stage. Teklehaimanot rode well in the break but the peloton kept the escapees on a short leash and so just before the climbs started, Stefan Denifl (IAM Cycling) and Sam Oomen (Giant-Alpecin) jumped away from the break while the other 3 riders returned to the peloton.

Our African Team were able to conserve energy in the peloton while Teklehaimanot spent the day in the break, and this set the team up nicely to take on the final climbs with the main group. A number of attacks flew from the peloton but Team Sky set a relentless pace on the front which meant nobody would get more than a minute’s lead in the final 30km.

Daniel Navarro (Cofidis) would eventually bridge and then pass the two lone leaders just before the top of the final climb, but the gap to the now 40 rider peloton was only 25″. Cummings and Serge Pauwels were both part of this select group and with Orica-Greenedge now setting the pace, our two African Team riders just bided their time. Navarro was caught in the final 4km and this played perfectly into the hands of Cummings.

In typical fashion, our British star went from the rear of the main group and just powered off the front with an incredible seated attack as the race went under the 1km to go banner. The main group hesitated for a second and this gave Cummings the upper hand. Cannondale and Orica-Greenedge put everything into the final 700m but Cummings had done it again. With his arms in the air, the peloton sprinted home a few meters behind Cummings with teammate Pauwles also punching the air in jubilation as he watched Steve take a fine win.

Steve Cummings – Rider: What a brilliant feeling this is. These early season races are so hard and to get two wins now, one in Tirreno-Adriatico and another here at Pais Vasco, it feels quite good. Before we came to Pais Vasco though I said I wanted to win a stage, some people may have thought something different about that but I am happy to have done it. I’m really pleased that I get to stand on the podium once again for Qhubeka, it just makes it such a good day for us.

Alex Sans Vega – Sport Director: Today was one of those day’s where everything works out. We wanted to be in the break because there was a 50% chance that the break would make it to the finish. Daniel Teklehaimanot was in, and that was perfect. The only problem was the Giant-Alpecin rider was 4 minutes behind on GC so the gap never got more than 5 minutes. So coming to the final, we wanted to try something. Steve got a great victory in typical and perfect Steve Cummings style. We are very happy with this result, the guys did a great job today.

Mikel Landa

Mikel Landa wins stage 2

The Race: Here's the organizer's explanation of the day's racing.

Garrastatxu chapel was the final line of the second stage. Mikel Landa (SKY) has been capable to win the stage near his town, Murgia. Now he is the new leader in Itzulia. Wilco Kelderman (TLJ) and both make some distance climbing Garrastatxu and the gap of 10seconds that they were able to have was enough to decide the winner of the stage. Landa was the fastest in the sprint on top of Garrastatxu.

The riders started fast this stage too. They were aware to have rain, but at the end we could enjoy the last kilometres without rain. The peloton was divided in two before the breakaway was created, and the leaders had some troubles. For instance, Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) had a puncture and he had to take his teammate’s bike.

Apart of the troubles, Stefan Denifl (IAM), Louis Meintjes (LAM) and Angel Madrazo (CJR) made some distance with the peloton, and in the pass from the top of Untzilla they had 3 minutes gap. Meintjes was not able to keep the position in the small group. In top of Kruzeta the group was formed by Denifl and Meintjes.

Meintjes tried to reduce the gap and to move back to the breakaway but the south African rider did not have enough strength and the main bunch caught him before arrive to Murgia. Later on, due to a crash, he abandoned the race.

To the previous climb to Garrastatxu, Denifl and Madrazo where together. Before the organization had to make a decision: not to pass from the two intermediate sprints located in Amurrio, due to the oil found on the road. To guarantee the security of the riders, the organization changed the route to avoid that zone and because of that the distance had been reduced 2-3 kilometres.

11 kilometres to Garrastatxu Denifl and Madrazo were caught by the peloton. Katusha made a big effort for that: all eight riders were in front of the main peloton to catch Denifl and Madrazo.

3 kilometres to the finish line they took to the right to start climbing Garrastatxu. They had a 19% slope and the bravest riders tried to move forward, Landa and Kelderman. Both made a gap of 10 seconds with the main group.

The stage and the leadership of Itzulia was to be decided between the Basque and Netherlands rider. Landa made the first movement and he was able to leave Kelderman behind. Kelderman was second in the finish line to one second. Aitor Osa was the previous leader in Itzulia before Mikel Landa in the history of the tour.

The rest of the leaders arrived behind. Samuel Sanchez (BMC) moved first, but Sergio Henao (SKY) was able to pass him and he was third in the stage, 5 second later than his teammate Landa. Alberto Contador (TNK) lost 11 seconds, Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) 13 and Nairo Quintana (MOV) 15 seconds.

Tomorrow the stage will start from Vitoria-Gasteiz direction to Lesaka. It seems a more relaxed stage for the favourites. It could be a good stage for stage hunters and the fast riders of the peloton to win the stage. In total the riders has to pass 5 climbs, the last top of Errukiñe, 9 kilometres to the finish line.

Monday, April 4: Stage 1, Etxebarria - Markina Xemein, 144 km

Stage 1 profile

Luis Leon Sanchez

Luis Leon Sanchez just beats Daniel Navarro

The Race: Here's the organizer's explanation of the day's racing.

Tour of Flanders, the Inside Story

Luis Leon Sanchez won the first stage of Markina-Xemein after the fight he had with Daniel Navarro (COF). Both riders created a group in the descent of Aiastia and both had the chance to win the stage. Luis Leon was the winner with a very close sprint, but he clarified that the aim of their team is to work for Fabio Aru (AST)

The stage was finished with the victory of the Astana team rider but the big protagonists were Marcel Wyss (IAM), Nicolas Edet (COF) and Jonathan Lastra (CJR), three riders that were part of the breakaway. Gialunca Brambilla (EQS) was part of the group but because of radio problems he decided to leave the front of the race to fix the problem.

The group passed the first six climbs together (Gontzagaigana, Santa Eufemia, San Migel and again Gontzagaigana and Santa Eufemia), while behind Tinkoff was keeping the gap controlled. We saw Amets Txurruka (OGE) in the front of the bunch when Orica GreenEdge decided to help to Tinkoff. Remember that this stage was special for him because the race started from his village, Etxebarria.

In Izua, the peloton caught the breakaway and then several riders try to make some distance. The best attack was made by Darío Cataldo (AST) who was able to make a gap of 30", enough to descent Izua and start climbing Aiastia in front of the race. Before to reach to the top the peloton neutralized the italian cyclist. Alberto Contador (TNK) attacked 200 metres before the top trying to show that he is in form and to pass in the first position the climb of Aiastia.

Once all packed, first Dani Navarro (COF) and later Luis Leon Sanchez (AST) moved forward in the descent. Both together they made a gap enough to arrive to the finish line and to get the victory. The bunch was very close and the fastest in the peloton where Simon Gerrans (OGE) and Fabio Felline (TFS).

Tomorrow there will be more mountains in the stage of four climbs and the last one in Garrastatxu. This climb has less than 3 kms but the average slope is 11,67%. Rain is expected tomorrow and it will make harder the stage. All favourites will have the first real chance to show their strength.
