Vuelta Ciclista a Rioja (1.1), Spain
Historic results, distances, average speed
The Vuelta Ciclista a Rioja was launched in 1957 as a short stage race in the La Rioja province of northern Spain. Originally held in September, since 1996 it has been run in early spring.
In 2005 it was ranked as a 2.1 stage race, but economic troubles forced the organizers to cut back in 2009. Rather than scrap the race, it was re-invented as a single-day race with a 1.1 rating.
Velonews explained the situation: "Economic woes in Spain have forced organizers to reduce the formerly three-day Rioja tour into a one-day race around the famous wine-growing region. Rather than risk not having any race at all, organizers opted to downsize in 2009 with hopes of reviving the stage-race format next season".
Jesus Manzaneque and Carlos Echeverria have the most Vuelta Rioja wins, at three each.
The race is organized by the Club Ciclista Logroñes
The last edition held was in 2017.
