Weather at the finish city of Pontarlier at 3:00 PM, local time: 14C (58F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the north at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 5% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from Loic Vliegen's Circus-Wanty Gobert team.

Loic Vliegen has won the Tour du Doubs (1.1, 6/09) this Sunday. The French race crossed the Doubs department, from Morteau to Pontarlier. The race was animated with a first breakaway of two riders, joined by four others later. The repetition of climbs got the better of the escapees. The breakaway was caught with 20 kilometer to go.

The race was finally decided on the Larmont, the last climb of the day with 6 kilometer to go. Loïc Vliegen was attentive and attacked on this final climb, resisting to the peloton in the streets of Pontarlier, the city of... absinthe! The Belgian rider is in good form for a couple of weeks already and offered Circus-Wanty Gobert-Tormans its first victory of the post-lockdown period.

Loic Vliegen:
" It was a complicated race, because during the first 60 kilometer there were many attacks and there was no control in the peloton. In addition, I didn't have a great feeling, but my legs felt better and better during the stage. The team worked well all day, and I knew I could do something on the final climb. I did the recon of the final yesterday, and I knew it was possible to resist to the peloton downhill.

"I attacked with 300 meter to go to the top of the Larmont and I maintained my advantage downhill. I went downhill full, without questioning it. I saw that my chasers weren't far back, less than 10 seconds, but I resisted well on the flat, enabling me to enjoy the final hectometers.

"I'm happy that I could finally cross the finish line with arms in the air. My condition is good since the restart on the first of August, but success was lacking.  It was time to deliver! I didn't participate often in races of the French Cup, and it wasn't always easy for me to read the race and to know how to manage the final. Today I succeeded, which is encouraging for the next weeks. I'm going to the Heistse Pijl and the Tour of Luxembourg with confidence, before thinking about the classics."
