About Tom Dumoulin:
Dutchman Tom Dumoulin (born November 11, 1990) could both climb and time trial, a rare combination of relative and absolute power.
Though a rider of extraordinary talent, he won only one Grand Tour, the 2017 Giro d'Italia.
Dumoulin turned pro in 2012 for Argos-Shimano, a team that would have many different names and sponsors over the years
He looked like he was going to win the 2015 Vuelta a España, but on the penultimate stage, a monster with four first-category climbs, he simply ran out of gas and lost 7min 30sec. He fell from being the GC leader to sixth place, not even on the podium.
In 2017 he won not only the Giro d'Italia (winning two stages along the way), he was the Individual Time Trial World Champion and was on the team that won the Team Time Trial World Championship. Add in his winning the BinckBanck stage race and you have a superb year of racing.
His 2018 season did not measure up to that standard, but he was still second in the Giro and second in the Tour de France and second in the World Time Trial Championships.
After that, his best international placings during the rest of his career were a fourth in Italy's Tirreno-Adriatico and second at the 2021 Olympic Individual Time Trial.
He moved to the Dutch Team Jumbo-Visma in 2020. In January 2021 he took a temporary retirement from racing to think about his career and his motivations for racing. He came back to racing in June to ride the Tour of Switzerland. The first stage of that Swiss Tour was a time trial, wherehe finished 16th, just 32 seconds behind winner Stefan Küng. He had not lost a lot of form during his layoff. Dumoulin went onto win the Olympic Silver Medal. That September he was hit by a car while training, ending his season.
He attempted the 2022 Giro d'Italia, but abandoned.
He announced that he would retire at the end of the 2022 season, but in August of that year he announced that he was quitting racing "with immediate effect".
He wrote: “About two months ago I announced that I would retire as a professional cyclist at the end of the year. During last spring, despite my love for the bike, I noticed that things weren’t going how I wanted. I felt that I was ready for a new phase in my life. But, I still had one project on my wish list to end my career with a bang; the World Championship in Australia. I wanted to tackle that road to the World Championship the way I tackled the road to the Tokyo Olympics. With a sense of freedom, on my terms, with the support of the team and with my intrinsic motivation as the main fuel. That’s what brought me back the joy of cycling back then.”
“But I notice that I can’t do it anymore. The tank is empty, the legs feel heavy and the training sessions are not working out as I hoped.”
