Stage 1, Saturday, May 4:, Napoli - Napoli, 130 km
Stage map, profile and more photos are below the results.
The Race: Good weather, sunny and 28C (83F). Lots of crashes and flat tires. Almost from the gun seven riders broke away and on the second time up the Posillipo climb Cannondale's Cameron Wurf took off. The break was caught while Wurf remained off the front with a gap of about two minutes until the bunch started to reel him in. It was gruppo compatto at 18 km to go with Mark Cavendish's Omega Pharma-Quick Step team doing most of the work at the front.
Crashes near the end created gaps in the pack but Mark Cavendish was in the front group. Still, he was badly position for the final rush but his astonishing turn of speed allowed to come from behind and pass everyone.
