It was an icy cold, wet Saturday when Jan Raas beat his three fellow breakaways to win the first important race of the 1981 season.
In 1981 Raas was only the third non-Belgian to win Het Volk, the other two being Seamus Elliot in 1959 and Dutchman Jo De Roo in 1966.
