Mark Cavendish wins Topur de France stage 7

Mark Cavendish just wins Tour stage 7.

Rated ascent:

The Race: Friday, Stage seven was another day for the sprinters. Here’s how the Tour de France summed up the situation in the coming stage: “Stage 7 from Livarot to Fougères is a wonderful visit of rural France the day after riding along the coast of the English Channel. Starting in Normandy, going through the traditional Mayenne province where the Madiot brothers and Jacky Durand, the great personalities of French cycling, hail from, the race will end up in Brittany. The hot bed of French cycling awaits the Tour for three days and three totally different stages. The first one is perfect for the sprinters in Fougères, the second one will suit punchy climbers in Mûr-de-Bretagne and the third one is an atypical team time trial with an uphill finish at Plumelec.

"There have been very few hills in the first six days of the Tour de France, albeit very few opportunities for pure sprinters. André Greipel has won the only real bunch sprint in Amiens. After missing out on the jostle for positions in Le Havre, the green jersey holder is hungry for more, so are Peter Sagan, Alexander Kristoff, Mark Cavendish, Bryan Coquard and Arnaud Démare. The only sprinter out of the Tour so far is Nacer Bouhanni. Michael Matthews remains in the race but he's out of contention because of injuries. Fougères is the last occasion for a bunch gallop until seven days later in Rodez in the best case scenario.

“Tony Martin remained the leader of the Tour de France despite crashing in stage 6 and breaking his left collarbone in several pieces. He won't start the race today. There's no yellow jersey in the bunch for this stage as the president of the commissaires panel has announced that there's no leader. Runner up Chris Froome becomes the highest ranked rider on GC, with an advantage of 13 seconds over Tejay van Garderen and 15 seconds over Peter Sagan. It's going to be difficult again for the Slovakian to move into the lead as 10, 6 and 4 seconds of time bonus are awarded on the finishing line. In case of a bunch gallop, he'd need a split in the peloton to overtake Froome.

“André Greipel's lead in the points classification has been significantly reduced yesterday after he and his team-mates made a mistake at a roundabout with eight or nine kilometers to go, as the German sprinter himself admitted last night. They never managed to get back to the front part of the race. This is his fifth day in the green jersey. He's got a slim advantage of three points over Peter Sagan, 41 points over John Degenkolb. 50 points are awarded to the stage winner today. The intermediate sprint is located at Argentan, km 65.5.”

Before the start, here’s what Chris Froome said about not wearing the Yellow Jersey: “Out of respect for Tony I would never have worn it in any case. That's not the way to get the yellow jersey due to someone else's misfortunes but Tony finished yesterday. I was second on the GC so there was no way to wear it. It's never a burden especially in a stage like today, it's definitely a stage for the sprinters so the pressure is on the sprinters' teams to control the race and get to the front. It's just another day to get through. So far the guys have done a fantastic job keeping me safe, keeping me out of trouble. Yesterday, there was a little bit of confusion out on the road in terms of who caused the accident. Vincenzo [Nibali] blamed me for the incident so I just went to the Astana bus to set the record straight.

"It doesn't really change too much for us because for the whole race up until now the team has been keeping me in the front of the race. It made no difference if I was wearing the jersey or not. It's about staying out of trouble, ahead of the crashes and getting to the finish line with no splits with the other GC contenders. Up to now, I'm in a very fortunate position. I was not caught in crosswinds. The cobbles went well. I'm in a very good position in terms of the GC standings going into the team time trial in that pole position if you like.

“It's a huge honour to be in the yellow jersey. But I'll first get through this stage and see what happens.”

186 riders started the stage at about 1 PM. There were two non-starters, Greg Henderson (Lotto-Soudal) and as noted above, Tony Martin. Almost at the start five riders broke away: Kristjian Durasek (Lampre-Merida), Luis Angel Maté (Cofidis), Anthony Delaplace and Brice Feillu (Bretagne-Séché Environnement) and Daniel Teklehaimanot (MTN).

Initially, the peloton didn’t worry about the escapees. Unsurprisingly, polka-dot jersey owner Daniel Teklehaimanot was the first over the Côte de Canapville, the day’s only climb with points.

As the peloton cruised over the roads of northern France, it was Etixx-Quick Step and Lotto-Soudal that pulled the peloton. With a little more than 100 kilometers of the day’s 190 kilometers left to be raced, the escaping quintet was two minutes ahead of the pack.

Once the peloton had the break in sight, it stopped its vigorous chasing efforts, knowing that upon making the catch, others would try to get away. With forty kilometers left to race, the quintet was still a half-minute up the road.

In the break, Maté got itchy and attacked, prompting Teklehaimanot to sit up and rejoin the field. He had grabbed the KOM points to cement his ownership of the polka-dot jersey anyway, so his work was done. And, with eleven kilometers left in the stage, all the break riders had been caught and the pack was together with Sky riding at the front to protect GC leader Chris Froome.

As the race started to wind up for the sprint, Giant-Alpecin moved to the front with the idea of leading out John Degenkolb. It didn’t work. Lotto-Soudal took over in the final meters hoping to get another André Greipel stage victory, but Mark Cavendish went by everyone to take the stage, his 26th Tour stage win.  Greipel was second and Sagan third.

Chris Froome finished safely to remain the overall leader with Sagan second at five seconds.
