2012 Giro D'Italia: Stage 5

Back to 2012 Giro page | Stage 5 map and profile | Photos |

Stage 5, Thursday, May 10: Modena - Fano, 199 km

Stage 5 finish

The Race: It seemed like we would have a trouble-free stage until there was a crash with about 35 km to go, taking, again, Taylor Phinney to the ground. Getting back on meant closing the gap to a peloton that was zooming up the Gabice Monte ascent. Liquigas kept things really hot during both the climb and descent. Getting back on was beyond Phinney's ability and he finished more than 12 minutes down. Sky finally got all the pieces of its leadout train working properly. They gave Mark Cavendish a perfect leadout and no one was going to beat him today.
